I want to replace my tyres .( too much road noise )

Keeping the wheels as 18" however thinking off replacing tyres :

Front 225 / 40 .

Rears 245 / 35 .


what are advantages / disadvantages .

From a visual perspective, your rear tires will be smaller than the fronts.

245/35/18 = 24.7519 in.
225/40/18 = 25.0866 in.

Only about a quarter inch, though. 1/8 in. on both sides.

Another disadvantage is the rotation logistics. You'll be crankin' through the 245's on the rear, and not be able to rotate your 225's.

Assuming you have uni-directional tires, you'll have to dismount the 225's to rotate, and this will only be a left to right type of rotation, not a front to back, as suggested.

Suprisingly the new mercedes benz SLK is going to use this wheel tyre set up in their AMG version of the sports SLK .

Iwould have thought that they would know their tyre set ups ???????

I realise the disadvantage of not being able to rotate your tyres front to rear .

I'm sure if Mercedes is doing it it's probably ok. I just used a diameter calculator and posted. I apologize if I offended you. Just trying to provide info.

Confusing the tyre issue a little further i have found another article on the tyre size they state ,

Front tyre 225 /45

Rear tyres 245 /40.

Two different articles two diferring tyre sizes veeerrry interesting.

i don't think it's generally a good idea to make the back tires bigger when the car wasn't designed that way, so i don't think too many people here are going to recommend doing that. If you want 245s on the back, just put them on the front too, that's what i'll be doing.

Ditto - If a car comes from the factory with a staggered tire setup, they will have taken that into account with their stock suspension tuning. The RX-8 handling was tuned with same-size tires front and rear, so going wider on the rear will change the handling balance towards more understeer. I hate understeer! If you look at what the autocrossers are using as a guide to improving handling, they go wider with the same size front and rear.
