Couldn't find much in the way of a search on this, other than the start button threads.

Has anyone looked into replicating the keyless system on the new vettes?

Concept is pretty simple I guess, it's an active chip instead of pushing buttons. Walk up to car, car unlocks. Get in, push start button. As long as key with transponder is within range, the car unlocks and starts just fine. This would be WAY cool.

Thoughts?

There was some talk about them in some of the alarm threads too.

The new Toyota Prius has this, too. Theirs is called Smart Entry / Smart Start. As long as you have the key fob in a pocket, purse, etc., you just walk up to the car, open the door (unlocks when you put your hand inside the door handle), get in, push the start button and go.

Saw this at the car show. It was pretty cool.

I had that on my 97 Vette and never used it. It would lock and unlock if you were standing around the car talking. I always used the buttons and turned off the passive switch.

Apparently, they have improved the technology. The car won't unlock just by being in close proximity. You actually have to grab the door handle for them to unlock. I still think it's pretty cool.

That sounds like a good setup. The Vette is still like my 97 unless they changed it on the C 6. The door handle idea would work great.

Slightly off topic, but Honda has implemented this system on their 250cc-400cc scooters (in Japan the Forza) as well. And interesting idea...

just do a google search...there are plenty of keyless entry systems like this...the transmitter is a credit card sized remote that hides in your wallet..when you approach the car it unlocks...i don't know how good/bad it works but it is out there and has been for a while...i was thinking of getting this plus a remote start system

Yes and no... I haven't found any PKE solutions that a consumer can buy. Lots of OEM type application, Philips has one, and a few other companies, but no aftermarket like DEI or any of the alarm companies have anything like it. As far as I can see anyway.
