Tonight, I put my cell phone in the drink holder and closed the cover. When I opened it and took it out, it was noticibly warm. Has anyone else noticed this? I guess it could be that the engine is located so close, but it seems strange.

It will help keep your coffee warm but I did find out it is not good to store your M & M's in there.

I guess that would go for Hershey Kisses and Peanut Butter Cups as well? :)

We can make s'mores! :D

There's gotta be a way to sandwich some thin-sulation under there....

Both my rx-7s had the same problem in the ash/coin tray. I carelessly put a 256mb flash drive in the cup holder when I first got the 8. Needless to say I learned my lesson.

FWIW, the cupholder in the center console of the Honda S2000 is also lovingly referred to as the "beverage warmer." ;)

FRONT CUP HOLDER / CENTER CONSOLE BECOMES HOT
Applicable Models
Model Starting S/N Ending S/N
2004 RX8 00000000 40113124

Some customers may complain of the front cupholder area of the center console becoming hot after extended driving, causing cold drinks to warm. Due to the heat from the exhaust system (catalyst), the center console (cup holder area) becomes hot. This is due to insufficient insulation between the floor panel N cup holder. A insulation pad is available to reduce the heat transfer to the center console. 1. Remove the upper panel, hole cover (cigar lighter) and storage box from the vehicle. (See WSM 9-17-8) 2. Remove the six screws from the upper panel and remove the rear console. (See WSM 9-17-8,9) 3. Attach the heat insulater pad to the bottom of the front cup holder in the rear console removed at the above step #2. NOTE: Be sure to attach the heat insulator pad so that the bottom of the cup holder is wrapped. 4. Re-install the parts reverse order of removal. Parts information: F151-55-161 Heat insulator pad

Thanks for the posting - I've noted this with my RX8. Will get it fixed at the first servicing. John

I am not sure about the cup holder being warm ....but I did find out that the ashtray which I turn into a coin box, was hot......kinda supprise initially. Luckily did not have the time to turn that into candy corner....

Beware of the cupholder fix- a few folks have posted that it may not reduce console temps very much...I may not have it done. I'm not sure the service guys could put everything back together without tearing something up or creating new squeaks/rattles.

It's not exactly difficult to take apart the center console. I've done so myself and not found a lot of insulation for that area where the cupholder should be. My cup holder usually ends up as a coffee warmer. Works great to warm up my lunch too!

rotary engine produces high temp exhaust and your center console is near the pre-catalytic converter where heat is retained. that's why it heats up a lot.
