View Full Version : Best Looking Rotary Car
s13lover 01-29-2004, 06:29 PM Just wandering what everyone thinks is the best looking rotary powered car ever made. Personally I think it is the Mercedes C 111. But the FD is not far behind. Plus the C111 had 350hp, did 0-60 in 4.8 sec, and topped out at over 180mph.
mikeb 01-29-2004, 06:59 PM I didn't know mercedes had a rotary in the past
ALWAZL8 01-29-2004, 07:13 PM The RX-8, of course! :D
jtimbck2 01-29-2004, 07:26 PM It's ironic that pic came from a site called "Pistonheads" :p
zerobanger 01-29-2004, 07:56 PM the FD is incomparable. The rx-8 is without a doubt the coolest, but best looking? The FD is timeless.
wakeech 01-29-2004, 09:26 PM yeah, the latest-model spec FD Spirit R Type A in that signature Titanium Grey. easily the sexiest rotary car ever.
next in line, i'd say the RX-3.
then, i'd go for the first gen RX-7.
what can i say?? i'm utilitarian... gullwing doors are a terrible solution.
racerdave 01-29-2004, 09:39 PM I love the 8, but I gotta give props to the FD.
Without a doubt... Gandu's Rx8.
rx-7~rx-8 01-29-2004, 10:18 PM RX-7 .... without a doubt... then the... RX-8...
Jeff_pap31s 01-29-2004, 11:21 PM RX8! And that pic above is FUGLY!
pelucidor 01-29-2004, 11:55 PM When I had my Velocity Red RX-8 I put 4 coats of Zaino on it and went to an RX-7 meet. My car looked stunning, everyone commented on it. Then someone drove in and parked their slightly dirty 11 year old red FD next to my RX-8. My jaw dropped - no contest. I hope the new FE looks as similar to the FD as the RX-8 platform allows...
Senseny 01-30-2004, 12:38 AM The Benz is cool, the 8 has an eyecatching, wonderful design, but hands down the FD is the greatest looking car to sport a rotary. Personally (and I am not alone here) I think it is one of the greatest looking sportscars ever, bar none. The lines are so clean and I swear at sometimes at certain angles the car looks liquid. Before I get flamed about the one of the great looking sports cars of all time I do not rank it above Etype Jags, Porsche Spyder, some Ferarri's (esp front engined), etc. I just put the styling right up there with those great cars.
cueball 01-30-2004, 01:47 PM Another vote for the FD Spirit R.

wakeech 01-30-2004, 02:15 PM :D *shiver* :D
...damn, damn, damn... the next Rex shouldn't be any different. simple perfection.
mental pimp 01-30-2004, 03:15 PM Nice car, how much is it?
racerdave 01-30-2004, 03:15 PM And those pictures don't even do the FD justice... it's better in person. Saw one the other day and still couldn't help but rubberneck.
chinx 01-30-2004, 04:27 PM imho c111 is ugly! i hate mercedes =P and it's not even a production car; it represents mercedes' failed attempt at developing the rotary! best looking and most successful rotaries are all mazdas
best looking rotaries: FD, then RX-8, then Eunos Cosmo

It is only available in Japan and costs 3,998,000 yen, which is about $37,810 US at the current exchange rate.
s13lover 01-30-2004, 06:11 PM Wow, I didn't think so many people disliked the C-111. I know the car is dated looking but I think it looked outstating for its time, just like a Lambo Countach.
The FD is a timeless beauty. I plan to buy one for my next car. But I picked the C-111 for its supercar alure.

Here are some pics to demonstrate that point.

I know what you mean, but I think the next-gen rx7 won't be designated FE... the rx8 is already FE, at least in the US.
As for what it looks like - yes I think the FD rx-7 is one of the sharpest looking cars around - the '8 is certainly a looker but in a different kind of way - the FD just screams speed and handling (and delivers).
BTW -the above side-by-side is really cool. Very nice cars both of them.
khoney 01-31-2004, 09:38 AM FD, by a longshot. This coming from an FC and RX-8 owner.
loco4rx8 01-31-2004, 09:52 AM I remember fantasizing about owning an FD when I first saw one at a Mazda dealer while waiting for my Miata to be serviced. It is the best looking car ever made.
I'd vote the RX-8 second, though.

You can thank JaySpec7 for the pictures.
Senseny 01-31-2004, 03:23 PM I love the seven in that pic, but can't stand that type of spoiler on an FD.
ProtegeMan 02-01-2004, 06:49 PM the fd is defenately a beautiful car but since the post wasnt specific about a "production car" I am going to have to say the 787b wins no contest
When I bought my 8 they still had and FD in the showroom that they were selling, it only had a few hundred miles. It was tempting but then I looked at my kids and it reminded me that the 8 was the next best thing. Now only if it had the same performance!
Hanzo 02-03-2004, 06:00 AM 2000 Mazda RX-7 FD3S Type RZ

FD with the headlight conversion gets my vote :) I also rather like the Cosmo
Senseny 02-09-2004, 06:17 PM Ike, I like the sleek headlights (on my list of eventual mods). But for me the stock bodywork is far superior to any FD kit out there.
