View Full Version : An Amusing Story and Lesson for All

I thought I had learned my lesson. Always work on your car yourself. If you can't, double check other's work.

But no.

Again, being pressed severely for time due to being Active Army, I raced to the local garage and dropped my car off to get the tires balanced and rotated. I hopped into my buddies car and we darted off to the next class requirement.

Fast foward a month to now. I changed my wheels today. A little late you might say. Well about five days ago, we had to plow out our driveway because it was buried under snow. About two feet of it. Yes, I know it was late April, but Northern New York doesn't care what you think about Spring. So I held out to rotate my winter wheels out until today. When I moved my car into the garage to lift it up and start loosening some lugs, I noticed the CEL was blinking. I figured it was just an old misfire. To check I dug out my handy dandy Cobb AP from under my seat so I could talk to her in her language. "Talk to me baby," I said as I plugged the USB cord into the AccessPort. I reached up under the wheel with the other end to find a gapingly wide female port on the OBDII connector. "What the f..."

Panic.

I looked under the seat. I looked under the mat. I opened the glove box. I jumped into the passenger seat and repeated. I got my wrench out and took the dead pedal out; maybe it fell behind it! Alas. Gone.

Those bastards.

The shop must have done a simple diagnostic for whatever reason back in Kentucky. To do that they would've had to have removed the dongle. They must have forgot to replace it.

I also noticed they didn't replace one of my air valves caps when I swapped out wheels.

Those bastards.

But the biggest bastard is me. I didn't check their work. Worse yet, I didn't check their work for about a month. Stupid. And I thought I learned this lesson last time I was pressed for time.

The semi good news: Cobb will sell you a dongle individual and separate from the AccessPort package for $80.00. Yes, that's a bit if you ask me. But shipping is free. Cobb will also ship you any component individually if you loose it, just for reference. Missing a USB Cable? Yeah they'll ship that, probably just for the low cost of an arm and a leg. But shipping will be free.

So guys, please make sure you check everything as soon as you pick your car up if you absolutely have to leave it at a shop.

If you're one of those folks who always leave your car at a shop... start learning how to do basic maintenance and replacement yourself. If I had the time, I would've rotated and balanced my own damn wheels because I've taken the time to learn how. Not only does it save you a ton of $$$ but you can also rest assured that the job was done right.

Lol, aint that the truth. Just today I got my car back. They replaced the coolant overflow tank and found a spare coolant pressure cap under my hood off to the side.

I have the advance keyless system on my car. Whenever I take it to the dealer I always take the spare key out of it. I now have 3 extra keys that are cut for other cars because the dealership must think they lost it and just stick another one they have laying around in. I wonder what they would do if I called one day saying my key isnt working....

This is why I do 90+% of the work myself

for other work, I either leave them to somebody I really trust (Wayne Mazda and one other shop in Queens), or I will stand there and watch EVERYTHING until they're done.

I just bought a new key off ebay, even came with the instructions on how to program it. My car came with two and the one i've been using the last few years was starting to get worn looking. Figured I would retire it.

Never Never Never...I say again, NEVER let a dealership or any shop touch your car if you have the time and know how to do it yourself. I feel your pain Endow. I'm also in the Army and dropped mine off while recovering from some Ghan wounds.

$2500 was the price of a new differential. They didn't secure the plug and it leaked out over several months. I now have to get an attorney. I think I will win in court but it's going to be a long battle. Program your GPS to stay away from Legend Mazda in San Antonio or even better, use the grid to call in an airstrike.

I go to the dealership from time to time for oil changes for one reason only, to build rapport with them. If they day ever comes that I need a new engine I want to be the "hey man! How's it going, great to see you again" guy.. not the "who the f are you?" guy.

I've read too many posts about too many people getting turned down for replacements because the dealership just decided to screw them. yeah, this doesn't ensure I'll get one if I need one, but the price of a few dealer oil changes (which I swap out with my own oil within 500 miles each time) is worth it to me.

I'm tracking on your opening a line of communication with your dealership. Not many places can work on our engine and the dealership is the only option for many of us.

It's just sad though the number of stories of botched up remedial services like oil changes and tire rotation. Some of the mechanics doing this work are still in high school, I've seen it first hand. I wouldn't trust a HS kid to sweep my garage.
And it's not just Mazda it's all of them. Then when something goes wrong they deny any wrongdoing. I'm sure there are some good ones out there but from my experience they are all run the same. They will never touch my RX8 or BMW again unless it's something way out of my lane. There is enough info on this site to properly do most tasks and you get the peace of mind that it was done right.

^Yeah the last time I made the mistake was when I was at Ft. Benning (this was obviously at Ft. Knox) and I had to get the plugs and battery swapped.

Guys left a trailing plug disconnected and I was running off of three plugs for a couple of weeks.

So I learned the lesson a long time ago; or so I thought. I consider this reinforcement.

I don't feel like I need to go to a dealer or a shop for anything. Not even an engine swap. And the 13b is simple to take apart compared to most engines. I've seen it done and I'm sure I can replicate the act. If I ever need to get into the chambers, all I'll need is a (small) engine lift. The more I get my car serviced, the less I trust shops.

PS:

Checked the reviews on Legend Mazda. Um. What a crap hole.

Oh an Ray,

Thanks man. Luckily I had 80 bones laying around and it's a recoverable loss. The only thing I can't get back is my pride.
