A rare serious post from me, but after spinning twice during our recent snow and Ice, my wife has finally agreed to let me buy the wrangler I have been talking about for the last few years..
Anyone have any tips for good years or problems to look out for?
I figure a 1998 or newer 6 is the way to go..
Any help would be grand...
Oh Finally MY FORTE...of course i love fixing up cars, I build JEEPS!!!...CJ's, Wranglers...
93 and above for Wranglers...98 and above if the wife want's some luxury to it...pre-round headllight wranglers beware of exhaust manifold bolts....they have been privy to breaking off leaking exhaust gas into the engine comp and loosing power on the engine as a result...if your lucky there was a recall that was warranted i think up to 100,000 miles for any dealer to replace them...
AS with any Jeep be prepared to have a ever expanding hole in your pocket...they're notorious for little problems...CJ's have bigger problems...depending on year and amount of degradation...
Try to find one that has not been abused...need to look at the vacuum lines on the transfer case to be sure they are not dry rotted and cracked...if you're lucky the one you buy; someone may have replaced the vacuum engagment system with a direct cable lever...so much better...guaranteed full 4 wheel drive engagement...i suggest joining the forum over at www.quadratec.com. there are some VERY experienced guys over there that are more than willing to help out as well...i'm there as well....not as much anymore since I've sold mine...
I have so much info on this stuff...just email me or PM me and I'll be glad to help...i think i even have spare parts from my old 93 Wrangler...

Funny - seems like folks into sports cars also have a tendency to be into other special-purpose vehicles too. There are some forums and email lists which would probably be interesting for you to browse or ask questions too - the jeep-tj mailing list on yahoo groups is a pretty good one..
