Without some attempt to control use of a trademark, it slips into the language as a generic term like escalator, aspirin, kleenex and xerox. Losing brand identity can hurt in some situations - say for example if someone asked you to go to the drug store and bring back some Band Aids, and instead you came back with a generic substitute. Imagine how frustrating (and damaging) it must be to see the brand identity that you worked so hard to build, becoming associated with your competitor's POS product as well.
