Anyone know if the "official" stuff is available yet?

PS, before anyone says "call the bloody dealer", it's 11pm and I'll have forgotten by the morning. ;)

According to the Grand Prix Mazda (BNE) invoice for my 10,000km service last Thursday, they used 4.5L FMX Magnatec. I guess this is official as far as Grand Prix Mazda are concerned

Check your dipstick and your owner's manual. You have either been overfilled or overcharged, or both

The sump fill capacity with oil filter change (ie, at 10,000k) is 3.5 litres. :(

I think the weight of technical opinion is that the oil should be mineral-based, but I guess we have to trust what the dealers are putting in

labrat... what did they charge you for the 4.5L?

ummm... since we are on this oil subject, i think im almost due for the 1,000 service, im currently sitting on almost 900km (i know i should've driven it more, but had no opportunity...)

so the question is, when i book in for the service, do i need to specify which oil to use for just leave it upto the service centre? im in sydney, and i'd assume they "have" the same procedures?
alot of my rx-7 mates are using penrite brand oils, i cant remebre which one exactly!?!?

IME and according to the service schedule, your oil will not be changed at 1,000k unless you ask for it, and pay for it. Likewise the filter :(

Its quite puzzling as to the different service intervals in different parts of the world. In the UK the first service and oil change isn't to 12,000miles, almost half as far again as your 10,000Km, and some reason the US gets a first oil change at 1000 miles.

Cheers

Hi Ezzy,

I read through the forums and a lot of people recommended Castrol Formula R 5w-30

I bought two bottles from Super Cheap Auto. I'm going to get the dealer to change the oil and filter at the 1000km service.

I plan to supply the oil at all the services so that the same stuff goes into it everytime.

I had this done on my Astina when it was new and I think its a good idea.

Melbourne City Mazda uses Castro R 5W-30

Hey I went in for a top up (about a 1.5 L in). They DID NOT charge me a cent! In fact they refuse to charge me! :D

That was real nice of them, I might send you down a couple of empty bottles to get topped up :-)

I've been told too that if I ever need a top up, my dealer will gladly do it at no charge. So they should, since they are the only ones who have the "official" Mazda oil at the moment.

My dealer does not have any official il or 5W anything. "We just put 10W-30 in everything." "That's what comes in bulk." My daughter takes care of my car maintenance as she does service at a Honda Dealer. they don't have 5W-20 in the bulk form either, but they certainly have it.

Agree! Seem they have no idea about rotaries. They prob don't know about the oil injector's either. Can't use anything too thick or too thin. 5W-30 is in the manual and Castrol R seems to be used by a lot of Mazda dealer. In Melbourne at least city Mazda and Penfold Mazda in Burwood uses it

My local dealer says the retail packs are still some time off - in the mean time they have topped me up twice and given me 5 litres to keep at home just in case .. all gratis!!

Actually I've been helped by 2 dealers - my first top up was from West End at Parramatta North (the dealer who sold me the car) and also McGraths at Liverpool (closer to home) - Vince is the service manager and he's great.

Where r u?? What colour is your car??

I'm in Wiloughby and my dealer is Eurocars Mazda. I'll be taking it in for the 10,000 check in a couple of weeks, so I'll talk to them about oil then.

Just had a call from dealer - they now have the Mazda RX8 mineral based oil from Japan in stock :-)

yeah, I just called 'em, $63 for 5 litres!

Okay, called the other dealer in town (remembering how much of a markup the first dealer put on the mats) and they are doing it for $49.

For Canberrans... you'll know the two dealers so I won't mention their names.

Belconnen dealer - $63

Woden dealer - $49

Have found this is consistant with prices on all their spares for the 8.

Guys, call around, not all dealers are equal :)
