So I found out today that I earned Sra. Below the zone in the USAF. I beat out a lot of my peers to get a fast promotion to E-4. Which means more money for mods :mdrmed:Even though I should probably save the extra money:suspect:

a lot of people won't know what this means at all except that it has to do with the military.

but congrats.

In the Air Force there is a thing called Below The Zone, or BTZ it is something you earn by excelling in work, and in your personal life. every E3 has a chance to make it, but few do. What the long and short of it is, is that you get a fast promotion to E4 without waiting the regular amount of time.

In the navy we have what is called "Push Buttons". I have a buddy who made E-5 in 2.5 years. Hell I have a buddy who made E-7 in 7. My father made E-7 in like 7 in the Marines. He was a First Sergeant for almost half of his service.

Congrats though man. I could have made E-5 in four but I got out instead :)

As one of those "push buttons" I worked my ass off to keep our benches up and then the aircraft flying when I transferred to a squadron. What you forgot to mention is that I had a contract for 6 years vs. 4. Yeah, I got E-3 out of boot and E-4 out of my "A" school, but at the end of 4, I had to extend for another 2, with no bonus

As an aside, don't forget that in the Navy you have to do all of those courses before you can take the test. All well and good except that the courses and the test HAD ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH MY JOB! Still had to complete them and pass the test. Oh, and don't forget about "frocking." This is where the Navy "frucks" you by promoting you into your new rank, with all of the responsibilities, but they DON"T PAY YOU for it for quite some time (November to August in my case.)

Am I bitter, no, even though it sounds like it. I just hated the fact that I had to take courses and pass a test that had nothing to do with what I did. I always got excellent reviews and such, but that didn't matter without the courses and test. Really sucked.

Still I would join the Navy again in a heartbeat. I would just do it a bit differently this time.

In the navy...made E-5 in 2...yup I'm one of the "push buttons" but that was for A school. I scored above 92% on the advancement exam in my rate...wich the promotion % was above 95%

choose your rate choose your fate

Yeah, I miss the Navy at times, I miss the Med, miss the Caribbean, etc.. But I have kids now, no way I could survive that long without them. My roomie was an ET and we used to always give him shit for being a push button because he was the lowest rank in his Dept (very small on a DDG-52) and so he had to Mess crank twice and get ordered around by E-3 MS's

I miss it. But I don't miss the shitty pay.

It means you have a good supervisor who is willing to put the package together and get the letters of support for your promotion - and he did it beause he thinks that with a little more rank, you can help take better care of the other kids in your unit.

Now you want to start finding out about Sgt school and, if you can, go to the school in Kirtland, NM, if they still have it. And, if you can get a B.S. degree, you might be able to make a run for OTS...

But for the moment, you can now start putting some savings away, and you can start deciding if you are going to make a career of it.

Congrats and enjoy - you earned it...
