View Full Version : Front brake rotors
ambulanceonfire 03-25-2010, 05:59 AM Ive noticed that no one carries rx8 sport suspension front rotors locally and got to thinking (dangerous) about why they don't. Is it because of the screw holes? If that's true i was going to ditch them anyway and wondered if there was a rotor i could buy cheaper (because of being more readily available) that doesn't have the holes.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
E.M.S. 03-25-2010, 06:39 AM just order them online. i find it strange that you cant find them locally but you can probably get a better deal online anyway.

Last I talked to Mike at Racing Brake they are planning on removing the screw holes as they aren't really necessary. I have a huge batch of rotors coming in early next week so let me know if you wanted to pick up a set of rotors.
ambulanceonfire 03-25-2010, 03:47 PM I appreciate all the feedback. Finding a good deal online isn't the problem though. Ive got some warped action and my rx8 is now my dd so i was trying to keep the vehicle in commission so i can get to work! If there's no other way though, that's how its going to have to be i suppose.
c0ldf1ame 03-25-2010, 03:57 PM if your not too serious about performance i wouldnt get 2 peice rotors, oem is probably still the best since they should be pretty cheap compared to other rotors and reliable and performs adequately.
pdxhak 03-25-2010, 04:45 PM You sure they are warped and not just build up on the rotors? Get up to 60-70 and then get of the brakes without locking up a few times. See if that helps.
ambulanceonfire 03-25-2010, 05:03 PM thats when the shuddering happens is when im slowing down quickly from 60-70+. im going to take mine over to a shop and see if they've been machined already and if they are true. Whoever had the vehicle before me decided to change 3 out of the 4 front pads??? One is factory and the others are duralast gold. I realize that i should change them but i don't have the money right now and there's still tons of pads left so im trying to get by until then.
pdxhak 03-25-2010, 05:40 PM Did you get on the brakes hard? If not then do it a couple of times and then see what happens.
E.M.S. 03-25-2010, 06:09 PM very very rarely are brake rotors warped. there is actually a build up of pad material on the rotor and under hard braking or riding the brakes that material can heat up and shift and that is what actually causes the runout that is measured. now sometimes they are warped but it is unlikely and imposible for any local machine shop to tell the difference as the material is built up in an uneven manner causing the wobble and this will actually show up when they measure the runout on their lathe. so listen to pdxhak and try to get up to 60+ mph and hit the brakes hard but do not go to 0. and do not let the abs kick in, i.e. don't hit them that hard just a few reall good 60-10 braking cycles can smooth out the material on the rotors and you may be all set.
oh and if you do need rotors i would suggest racing brakes from either raceroots or good-win racing. you wont need the 2 piece for a commuter car but they have 1 piece ones too that are top notch.
ambulanceonfire 03-25-2010, 07:59 PM The shop advised that the rotor is indeed uneven and noticed hard spots. They said that turning them would bring them below the minimum. With hard spots would you still recommend what seems to be a re-bedding process?
05rotary 03-25-2010, 09:46 PM I was in the same position you are right now, but after some reading I decided to get me some race rotor from Brice ( RaceRoots), hopefully he'll ship them next week!! get those..
justjim 03-26-2010, 10:02 AM Read the Brake FAQ before you do anything http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=167264 . Mixing different brands of pads on the front is ridiculous. Get a new set of pads. You may be able to keep the old rotors if you bed in the new pads but if they are in fact near the minimum thickness you can get good OEM rotors online at several places one of which is Zeckhausen racing at www.zeckhausenracing.com .
ambulanceonfire 03-26-2010, 05:53 PM i just got done putting everything back together and im going to go ahead and try to do a few 60+ hard stops and see what happens.
E.M.S. 03-26-2010, 06:57 PM good luck. you could try to use a set of harder brake pads as well. that would burn/scrape off the old material and set down a fresh layer.
ambulanceonfire 03-27-2010, 12:43 PM unfortunately id didn't work. i still have some pulsing in my pedal so i guess its on to spending money time!
E.M.S. 03-27-2010, 04:16 PM that sucks. you work private or municipal third service?
ambulanceonfire 03-27-2010, 10:35 PM neither kind sir. i just like having an ironic name...get it....:cwm27:
E.M.S. 03-28-2010, 04:50 PM yes i do:biggthump
ambulanceonfire 04-03-2010, 08:39 AM ended up buying some used rotors/ pads from Team. Hope they get here soon because my brakes feel like junk!
ShellDude 04-03-2010, 09:56 AM if they're racing brake you won't be disappointed. I run hawk ceramics on mine... word has it the rotors will last longer than the car!
ambulanceonfire 04-03-2010, 04:25 PM just some stockers. got here today and ones got a ding on the edge of the rotor. It looks like it was dropped onto the edge of something which pushed part of the face of the rotor out. The best i can describe it is it looking like its bubbled up on the edge. I asked Team what he thinks about it and wonder if the community had any ideas on if it can be turned out or not worry about it.
05rotary 04-09-2010, 06:52 AM sorry to hear about that , did you put them on? if you can see it and feel it, it will affect. I would return them and get new ones. imo..
I got mine from Brice ,rece roots, three days ago. They are lovely, i can't wait to put them on.! good luck....
ambulanceonfire 04-09-2010, 08:22 AM They were bad so i got my money back and now im off to buy some new ones!
TeamRX8 04-09-2010, 09:39 AM They were bad so i got my money back and now im off to buy some new ones!
Just to clarify, they were damaged during shipping because I was in the middle of moving and in my rush to get them out I didn't package them properly. Even though our deal also included a slightly used set of front OE brake pads that were in the box with the rotors I provided a 100% refund to compensate you for the mistake.
Race Roots 04-09-2010, 09:54 AM They were bad so i got my money back and now im off to buy some new ones!
Let me know if you need some rotors I have the Racing Brake ones instock and ready to ship!
E.M.S. 04-09-2010, 09:58 AM I would have brought it to a shop and see what the runout was. If it was truley just the edge and not really bent/warped you would be fine. I had a dent from my next door neighbors 5 year old dropped one of my rotors from my truck and put a dent in the edge, smashed it with a hammer to get out the burr and it was fine.
ambulanceonfire 04-09-2010, 11:23 AM I posted all the good parts of the story in Teams "good guy" thread. If you want to see them EMS heres some pics i took..

E.M.S. 04-09-2010, 12:27 PM I would return the $$$ to team and throw those on my car no problem. You should have seen what the 5 year old did to mine.I have a 4' concrete retaining wall infront of my house seperating the house from the driveway, I keep tools and supplies and parts(and beer) on the wall while I do any work on my car or truck. 5 year old dropped my tacoma's rotor off of the wall while trying to pick it up, the dernt was much bigger than that and they were fine.
I understand your concern but wouldn't worry about that little dent at all.no way that did anything to cause any problems.
ambulanceonfire 04-09-2010, 04:40 PM Please dont pin me as this guy that complains and was demanding my money back as that certainly is not the case and team can back me up. I saw the dents and asked him (seeing hes been around the block alot more than i) what he thought. Instead of replying right away he decided to send my money back and then reply a little after. I figured the refund was a way of saying "dont use those" so i decided not to. I also asked Team if i could throw money his way for the trouble at very least and all he wanted was a post in his good guy thread and i was not about to argue lol.
E.M.S. 04-09-2010, 04:56 PM Hey, I'm not bashing you at all and I said above, I understand your aprehension. I do. I'm just saying that I would absolutely trust those rotors without a doubt.
Whatever deal you had with Team is between you and him and he is clearly a stand up guy to send the $$ back right away without question. I'm just saying I would send it back to him and toss those on my car. No worries. They look fine to me.
If you want to be sure it won't gouge your pad you can hit the high spot with a file just to make it flush and good to go, or leave it.

It was 100% my mistake and you were completely innocent. The decision to refund in full was entirely my doing. You even asked to pay something and I insisted on the 100% refund. End of story.
My concern was that even if you put them in a brake lathe to eliminate the high spot that this would result in an unbalanced brake rotor. Better safe than sorry. Again, it was my fault for not protecting the rotor edges when I boxed them up.
