I used to think Houston had some ugly potholes when I lived there. With the passage of time and distance, my stories got more elaborate. I'm going to have to concede that Madrid's are worse. Check out this PP slide show (http://www.strangecosmos.com/view.adp?picture_id=11122) ...

I hope we don't have any road hazards quite that spectacular here in the states - although I think Florida gets house-sized sink-holes on occasion. Who (besides Madrid) has the worse potholes in the world? Show us your pics if you got 'em.

Norfolk/Virginia Beach - without a doubt the worst roads I've ever been on. Personally, I can't fault them (the highway guys) because they're constantly working on them; but maybe it's something to do with the asphalt compund they're using, because it definitely doesn't hold up (or at least that's the way it seems).

Hey anyone been to FIJI???

The Suva (mainisland) has only one stretch of road about 10 km does not have potholes. Otherwise potholes every 5 seconds.

Pennsylvania has been consistently rated as having some of the worst roads in the country. Last year, supposedly, we were given the award for "Most Improved Roads".

I'm not exactly sure where they're doin' the improvin' but, it's certainly not where I live...

I would have to agree, though 64 here in Richmond is so patched and full of bumps and potholes now that I do everything I can NOT to drive on it.

If you've ever driven off the main highways in Costa Rica you'll understand why most tourists rent SUV's. Some of those dirt roads have some of the largest rocks I've seen on any road. I guess renting that Toyota Corolla wasn't such a good idea, but thank goodness the rental company didn't look under the car for damage :)

1) Iraq

2) Pennsylvania

Honorable mention) Cincinatti. (Been there only once & thought my almost-new rental was just plain gonna drop its rear end. Wow! It was BAD. But that was '79, so I don't know anymore if it's as bad as it was then.)

I would have to concur. I grew up near Pittsburgh and moved out to join the military in 1993. Have since seen many a pothole filled road and still PA takes the perverbial cake!!

Detroit, MI. and I'm not saying that because I'm a Buckeye. :D

I drive up to see my friend a couple times a year who lives about 15-20 mins north of Detroit and everytime its like testing my reaction skills to get through there w/o blowing a tire. Don't even get me started on the road joints up there! :)

You know Elara, I'm thinking it HAS to be a 64 thing, 'cause almost from the time you get on (anywhere) until you exit somewhere (anywhere) it's a PITA.

My fault Elara, I was just victim to a bit of racism myself today, so I was on edge. It won't happen again.

But I'm not sure why you're mentioning me as implying something? I didn't say anything, it was criticalmass that made the implication that Blacks/minorities are "Detroits problem," and then continuing on to "LMFAO" whatever that means.

Please clarify why you included me in your post?

It had nothing to do with race, it had to do with a bunch of guys that look like they don't know what they're doing. They could just as well have been white.

Sorry guys, Compressor, I saw your name and typed it, meaning Critical Mass. Apologies.

And thanks for clarifying that, Noah. Sorry to be a wench. Getting rid of my post now.

I'll be the third to vote Detroit as the city with the worst potholes. I'm also a Buckeye, but I now live in Detroit and that's not why I'm making this claim. I've seen it rated on MSN as having the worst (bumpiest) roads in the country. I feel like my 8 is going to fall apart on certain roads here.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of terrible roads on my way to work, so I'm afraid my car will be in the 99th percentile of all vehicles for wear and tear. I know for a fact that the manufacturers don't perform durability testing for conditions that represent the 99th percentile of real-world driving conditions. I'm hoping the car won't be falling apart after being punished like this for a couple years.

Last year I spent a year traveling the united states in my rv.

Out of all the states I went through, the worse was in Louisiana. And I went thru NJ, PA, TX, virtually all the states mentioned in this thread...

Now I'm going by overall road quality, not size of pot holes.

I thought Spokane Washingon consistantly wins the crappiest roads for a city over 200,000 category in the U.S.

I used to live up the road near Cd'A, and I have to agree with that highway polls assessment.

Texas roads are a 1000x better than eastern washington roads. Idaho has really bad roads too, but no one lives there ;).

Gotta give props to my hometown, Kansas City, MO for having some shamefully dilapidated roads. Really the entire state of missouri is pretty bad when you cross the border to Kansas or Illinois you see a HUGE improvement.

I can't believe there hasn't been any Chicago representation here yet! Potholes are known as job security for construction companies around here.

And bernieunger, you're in Orange County. I can't ever remember seeing a pothole there.

Here's the article that I remembered. Check out the "Other Notes" at the bottom. It lists Detroit, Fresno, and Sacramento as the cities with the roughest roads.

Illinois a huge improvement? What have you been smoking?

In MO they strip the top layers of the pavement and resurface it. In IL they strip the road and leave it. And Chicago is the only place that I've seen cobblestone streets.

In downtown new orleans (where I used to live) My sister ran intoa pothole (at night) big enough to hide a medium sized dog. It ruined her rim and we were stuck with a flat.. and the lug nuts wouldnt come loose until we broke 2 lugs!!
