View Full Version : Lightning Yellow discontinued... NOT!
There have been a couple of threads rumoring that Yellow has been discontinued. Just received a VIN for my order and it is positively listed as Lightning Yellow. Build date is apparently sometime in January '04; don't have exact details yet.
MEGAREDS 01-22-2004, 10:53 PM Good... I almost bought the yellow. I couldn't believe how unpopular it seems to be relative to the red and gray. It was my first or second choice, depending on my mood and when its clean and the sun is shining... beautiful.
I thought you were in trouble Nubo, but didn't want to say anything... glad to hear I was wrong.
zerobanger 01-22-2004, 10:57 PM I love yellow on the FD. When my dealer got the first two rx-8's in the bay area, they had a yellow and blue. the blue sold before I got there so I ended up seeing the yellow as the first one.
I could not believe how ugly the rx8 was. I hated the car, thought it looked awkward and didn't care for it. The next week I saw the red and titanium and just loved the car. Then I saw the blue and new this was the color for me.
there is something about the lines of the rx-8 that it needs to have a darker color and I think only really small cars look good in yellow. again, this is just my opinion.

Hey Nubo, I heard "Safety Orange" was first runner-up at Mazda for a color choice behind Lightning Yellow...trying to appeal to the recreational hunter demographic (j/k). :D
My dealer here had a yellow one, but it didn't stick around long - maybe a few weeks, if that. It was a nice looking car in my opinion (although the wife would never have let me get it). I've been expecting to see it on the road around here (somewhere), but so far I've only seen one black one locally (once) and one other black one while on business in San Diego - all this over a 4-month timespan.
You're gonna have so much fun with that car... :)
JeRKy 8 Owner 01-23-2004, 01:51 AM MEGAREDS hahahathe same thing happened to me. The first timeI saw an Rx8 at a dealership it was a lightningyellow and I thought the Rx8 was a disgusting car. itlooked like a highlighter. But I later found out it was b/c of the lights in the showroom. When I saw oneon the street a few months ago Ithought it was pretty hot. Butyellow is not acolor for me though. I prefer car colors that are neutral and subtle that dont scream at your eye when you look at them.

Now I miss my orange 71 VW bug convertible
swoope 01-23-2004, 03:25 AM my dealer offered me yellow for free. ok they we making a point.
seems lots of yellow sitting on the lot. not sure where you are but i just got tit gray dxed for 400 over invoice.
not bragging just confused as to how you get what you want.
beers
flatso 01-23-2004, 05:26 AM a dealer I visited had a yellow a/t they were selling for $22,695 and it was still sitting there unsold 3 weeks later. I don't think I could drive around in yellow it just screams "look at meeeeeeee" but this is from someone who had an 84 copper Honda Accord so keep that in mind.
BillR 01-23-2004, 07:24 AM The yellow doesn't show dirt as bad as other colors.
I like it - kinda obvious. :)
Lock & Load 01-23-2004, 07:32 AM The individuals amongst the rx8 forum who are comfortable within themselves go for yellow it rocks.
Racer X-8 01-23-2004, 07:37 AM arararar :D
I'm not gonna say a thing....
Yes I will. I like the yellow. But I like the red too. If the yellow was a mica, hmmmmm.... might have gotten the yellow. That mica just is so very nice... not to rub it in... I like the yellow.
Maybe I shouldn't have said anything....
Well, but.... ah jeez!
th1rd3y3 01-23-2004, 08:19 AM i think the yellow would be sweet if it had a metallic quality to it. but as is it's just too dull of a yellow when it's looked at up close.
Racer X-8 01-23-2004, 08:39 AM Oh yeah, that yellow/black interior rocks big-time! Why didn't they offer it?!? Maybe with that + mica, maybe I would have gone that way. Maybe not. I always wanted a really sweet red & this is definitely it!
But I do like the yellow...
ZMNRX8 01-23-2004, 09:02 AM I have a yellow and I must say at first I was a bit dissapointed with it while sitting in the showroom. I had a Vivid Yellow Protege MP3 before and I was expecting it to be more of that color, a bit darker yet still bright. I thought about it a bit and was looking at the Titanium and black but just couldn't see myself in a dark car; plus I always said I wanted a canary yellow sports car and this is close enough. Once they gave me the awesome deal I wanted I went with it and after they cleaned it up and parked it outside to wait for me to drive it away, I fell in love with the yellow for sure! I will say though, I have yet to see another yellow around my area, so I'm kinda unique for the time being!
eccles 01-23-2004, 09:46 AM I opted for Winning Blue when I bought mine. At the time, I didn't think Lightning Yellow looked all that great in varying lighting conditions.
However, a few weeks ago I got the opportunity to take a yellow home for the weekend, during which time I parked it alongside my wife's Vivid Yellow Miata. I gotta say, after living with it for a few days, it really grew on me.
Now I'm really not sure whether I'll go for blue or yellow when I eventually buy another one.
Oh, and now that Winning Blue is also available on the Mazda 3, Lightning Yellow is even more exclusive!
chinx 01-23-2004, 09:55 AM i like the yellow, it's the color of choice, although i do admit it's not the prettiest yellow. it should be a little bit darker and be metallic or mica instead of solid, but still, i like it. at the la autoshow galpin had a custom painted orange 8. i don't know how i feel about it
zerobanger 01-23-2004, 10:00 AM On a sidenote, Mazda had yellow on the FD only the first model year. on the miata they had it in 92 and did not re-introduce any yellow until around 2001 or 2002. I would not be suprised if this is the last year of yellow.
grogiefrog 01-23-2004, 10:21 AM I recall that the first year yellow FD was on the cover of Motor Trend as the car of the year. There is a point to be made about having a yellow sports car.
Oh plus, anyone check out MT's car of the year? I can't believe it. I really thought that MT would again put a rotary back on top as the car of the year (the RX-8!). Looks like the tree huggers have won.

classicred 01-23-2004, 05:36 PM I think the lightning yellow is the absolute best color offered. In fact, had it not been for that color, I may have passed on the car! I don't quite get the attraction to the boring and nondescript silvers and grays that are a dime a dozen. There are tons of practically every make of car made in these shades, and they all blend together. The RX-8 totally loses its beauty in these colors. The blue is very nice, as is the black. Black is too high maintenance for me. I have yet to see the green, but the car I replaced was green, so I wanted a change anyway. The red just does not look as striking as the red on my Miata. It is just too dark. Also, the yellow Miatas and RX-7s are rare and much sought after. Check out posts on the Miata Forum sometime.
Normally I would not comment on others choices of colors, but there were some rather unkind things said here about one of the two colors sports cars should painted - yellow (fly to some) and red. All others are superflous.
I suspect I will hear a little desent about this post

yea damn you SOB j/k. seriously its all good. I was one of the meanies about yellow. It may grow on me again. I love the S2000 and FD in yellow, I dunno its just different on the 8 for some reason.
Have you seen the red in the sunlight? it is the most amazing red i have ever seen. The only reason I did not get red is because I figured everyone would have a red rx-8. I got blue and from what I can see everyone has a blue rx8, LOL. The green you mention is very nice, but I can see in a few years it will get the same reputation the montego blue got (they call it montego puke). As for black? My FD is black and I think black looks amazing on that car, while it looks nice on the rx8 just like you said its too much maintenance.
The reason you dont have have have a red or yellow FD? The Rx-8 is "A sportscar like no other". it doesn't follow the crowd, it breaks all the rules so really you can have any color you want, haha.
For a traditional sportscar I think Red, yellow and Black are the colors. But damn if I dont like the winning blue...its like electric or something. it says high energy when I look at it. OK I am rambling here.

Hooray finally someone who speaks my language .
I dont bother tryng to argue the colour issue anymore , some people are best kept in the dark .
yellow rocks "Wheels magazine" just voted the RX8 as car of the year here in Australia .
The front page featured none other than an yellow RX8 , THE ISIDE PAGES HAVE A TOTAL OF 12 PHOTOES OF THE rx8 AND THEY ARE ALL IN yellow.
Most magazines have featured yellow rx8 in their articles.
cheers

The blue was my second choice. I do like it. And black is a third "sports car color" as you say. I noticed the change of hue in the red under different lighting. Sometimes it looks good to me and sometimes not depending on conditions. But YELLOW is THE color! I really liked the RX-7 yellow, but it now looks rather dull to me. Miata's yellow was not quite right - too orangish. Yellow,it seems, is a very hard color to get right. Mustang finally has a nice looking yellow and Corvette used to.

I recently added two foreign magazines featuring the RX-8 to my collection. One was the Austrailian "Motor" magazine which compared the RX-8 to the WRX and the 350Z. The RX-8, of course, was yellow, as was the Lamborghini Gallardo in the same issue. The second magazine was Canada's "Sport Compact National" , which also featured a yellow RX-8 in its article.
Obviously all the car experts know what color the car should be!
khoney 01-23-2004, 07:38 PM Yellows are all over the car lots in San Antonio. I've seen only one on the road so far (but to be fair, I can count the number of RX-8 sightings in the past six months on two hands).
I see several comments that the yellow would be okay if only it had mica or metallic. Funny! One of the reasons I gravitated to the yellow was that it was one of the non-metallic finishes along with black.
To each his own and I can't wait to see what interesting new colors come along.
Doug Green 01-23-2004, 09:46 PM I love yellow......but not the yellow RX-8....around here we call it yeast infection yellow........I like yellow like the Porsche speed yellows.....a little more orange....I went with the red.
No disrespect for you yellow guys
Kind regards,
DG
I love the yellow.
After tinting the windows a few weeks back it's even better.
Great choice.

RX-GR8 01-23-2004, 11:50 PM i think the green will go before the yellow.
success07 01-24-2004, 12:55 AM Thanks DG!!! :D
Senseny 01-24-2004, 01:45 AM I love CYM (competition yellow mica) on the FD. For my money the best color in that car (although mine is Porsche black mettalic with Mercedes silver met. stripes). So when I heard there was going to be a yellow 8, I was like "I am all over that".
However, I don't like it in person nearly as much as I thought I would. Something about the shade of it and the lines of the car. So I got the winning blue and honestly couldn't be happier with the color.
JeRKy 8 Owner 01-24-2004, 03:14 AM I dontlike the color tones of the reds or yellows. Both were either too flashy when clean ortoo dull when dirty. I guess I havenever seen a freshly waxed red b/c Ive never liked it. I saw an odd red car coming from theother side of the road 2 weeks ago and it wasnt even a head turner. I heard a couple honks and then when I looked back Irealized it was a red Rx8.
Blue is decent and not as flashy as the other two and is verynice at times but whenits not clean it also tends to be dull.
Cant really say anything about black --this color neverdid anything for me in any car.
Green is very odd butoften it looks too close to black.
For me silver and gray are the best b/c they keep the sameappearance whether or not they are clean or dirty andthey dont shout at you to look at them. Yet I see a hidden beauty to both of them. I dont think theyre boring at all. I took titanium over sunlight silver b/c it seemed more aggressive andmasculine for me but if they didnt have titanium it would definitely been sunlight and then maybe blue.
SDFLY 01-24-2004, 08:01 PM As a previous owner of cars of virtually every color, I'd have never owned a Yellow one. I was lucky enough to view several different Mazda lots in the greater San Diego area and this car was the ONLY yellow I could find and it was the showroom example. Combined with a good tint, this combo is quite stunning (in my opinion). Black was my second choice as history will show silvers/greys and reds will be the most commonly seen.

Thanks for the compliment Doug - as for the wx, it's hard to complain here although I passed on the Supercross tonight due to some rare drizzle....I guess that makes me a fair wx fan.
