View Full Version : What the Sheriff's Deputy Asked...
Q121825 01-22-2004, 05:29 PM Today I had to go by the motorcycle dealer for the bf. As I pulled up, there were two Travis County Sheriff's vehicles (one car, one bike) parked outside. I ran in to get the parts that had come in and ran back out. Standing around the 8 were the two Deputies.
I walked over and said hi and we talked about the 8. As we chatted, one of the Deputies asks, "So, how fast will it go?"
I, not being terribly slow or stupid, grin big and say, "It's quite capable of doing the legal speed limit."
Deputy just laughs and says, "Have a nice day."
They then returned to their vehicles and got their revenueradar guns ready. I drove off, sedately, while flashing my lights at the on coming traffic to warn them.
S3/P3/E2 01-22-2004, 06:12 PM At least they were good sports about it. Seems like most are anyway unless really have an axe to grind about something. :)
Astor 01-22-2004, 07:09 PM I had two officers pull into my parking lot at work, I was smoking so I saw them, went over, had a nice chat, they asked how fast it would go, I said about 148 computer controlled, they said "well, we won't bother chasing you"
Omicron 01-22-2004, 07:28 PM Many many cops are car guys, and often, pretty nice people if you talk to them as people. Many people can't get past the badge, gun, and personna, but it's true. You could have told them the truth, and they probably would have reacted like any other car lover.

Ah, but "probably" is the problem. You just never know and it's not worth the risk at all. Especially since they were setting up a revenuespeed trap as we were talking.
I'll never get to serve on a Jury since I naturally distrust anything a cop says.
That reminds me of when the 2nd gen 7s were brand new. A cop pulled me over and was asking enthusiast-type questions of my new ride (it was hot back in '86). I answered his questions, human being to human being, and we had a somewhat enjoyable conversation. Then he handed me a ticket for speeding.
If he wanted to talk cars, great. If he wanted to play hard cop, I totally understand. But him mixing the two was messed up. I don't know if he thought of the car talk as Vasoline or what, but I felt a lot worse driving off from that ticket than any other ticket I've ever gotten.
Spin9k 01-23-2004, 08:28 AM I did some work for a local PD and the chief was interested in the 8 when I dropped by in it at Xmas. Offered a ride and he bit. Got to show him 1st and 2nd gear acceleration. Figured that would be safe (65mph)!!! He loved it!!!:D
Foureagles 01-25-2004, 12:24 PM Yeah, the bane of cops (lawyers, politicians, salesmen, etc., etc.) is being painted with slightly too broad a brush. It's the rogue 80% that give all the others a bad name!
