One rather hot lap of the Nurburgring in a RUF Porsche. This must've been taken some time ago - they're relocated the track entry and exit nowadays.

there's only one true Nuremburgring, and that would be the huge 14 mile one... 127 (or something...) turns of awesome deadliness.

ok, wow. thanks for the video eccles... do you think he was a rather mediocre driver trying a little too hard to drive the wheels off of it, or a very good driver having an obviously huge amount of fun?? ;)

i would just love to hear some idiot say "wtf, that porshe sucks... how fast does it do the 1/4??"

Check out the Nurenburgring web site (http://www.nuerburgring.de/eng/frame_04.htm). Click on the "Self Drive" link at the top.

It's the Nurburgring (not Nuremburgring - it's outside the town of Nurburg) Nordschleife (Northern Loop) - all 22+ kilometers of it.

Yes, you can drive it yourself - I did so in a rental Mercedes 18 months ago.

There's another, more detailed, map of it on the 'Ring fan site (http://www.nurburgring.de/?rubrik=nordschleife&lang=eng). The track entrance and exit in this video are located behind the new Grand Prix track at the bottom of the map, marked as "Alte Einfahrt" on that map. The new entry/exit facility is on the long straight, marked as "Neue Einfahrt." Moving it has not only allowed them to build a fairly impressive new center for day-use visitors, but has halved the length of that straight, which is probably a good thing seeing the speed that RUF gets up to along there!

I'll have to watch it again, but I rather suspect that it's a skilled driver having a hell of a time rather than a rookie overstretching his limits - his reactions are too quick and precise, and there's just too many points where (a) a rookie just wouldn't go in that hard, and (b) if he did, he wouldn't have come out unscathed!

This just in from a member of the local Porsche club:Actually - that's a Ruf test driver, basically a Porsche factory driver working for someone else (Ruf is the world's top Porsche tuner outside the factory) The car is the RUF CTR, one of the fastest lap times on the 'ring ever. It's good driving too, tho he's abusing the tires a little much. Take a look out the windscreen and notice how smooth the scenery moves laterally. All that sawing is causing the car to follow a smooth path around the course right at, and frequently just over, the limit - he's catching it each time it wants to get away - which is what a good driver can do.

That clip is Part 1 and comes completely from inside the car. Part 2 is the subsequent lap with shots from inside the car, on-board exterior cameras, stationary cameras around the track and a chase bird. You can find both these clips, plus a whole lotta others (included a 959 at Dakar), at the Latvian Porsche Club's site

Great video. Definately not a rookie. The guys on the MC were rookies. They bikes seemed to be mopeds?

Here is the full vid with outside as well.

I believe Paul Frère may have been driving. It's the famous "yellowbird" footage I believe.

Not your average mopeds (though a couple were), but the odd euro motorcycles that are basicly beefed up mopeds, or toned down motorcycles depending on if you're a glass is half empty or half full kind of guy...

And yes, he's a very good driver, no rookie could handle a car like that, control over and understeer the way he does, and shift with such precision.

Here's an STi5 Type RA on the old ring, it's another great ride along video with the mic mounted near the exhaust and a front bumper camera. Seems he was being a little easier on his tires than the RUF.

For those of you not aware RUF is considered a manufacturer rather than a tuner since they make some pretty significant changes to the cars.

Heh, someone analyze the videos and see what times they turn compared to one another. I keep coming up with different conclusions since I can pull stills from both videos up at once.
