So this morning i went to start my car and its died. The battery was completely drain, i put the key in the ignition and nothing came on. This is the first time this has happened. I dont kno how it died because i drove it last night and it was fine, and nothing was left on plus it wasn't cold overnight... weird ehh.
I hooked up a charger for like 5 mins and it started.

could this mean i need a new battery or was it just bad luck it was dead.

How old is the battery? They do wear out.
I would have it checked at an Autozone, Load Tested. And the charging system too. Alternator output.
Might just be time for a new one.

Maybe a bad battery terminal connection. When you put the charger on this morning, the "clamping force" of the clamp just re-seated everything... that's why you were able to start the car and drive fine. That's my postulate.

Yes more than likely. Our batteries are covered under warranty for a period of 3 years I believe. If it goes in under 2yrs they cover 50% of the cost plus no charge for installing it and 25% under 3years.

Btw I had to tell them that installation was included or they would have charged me. :)

I had mine replace and saved $30 or so. They will also run a check on the battery to see if it can still hold a charge. If it can then you have other issues. I knew mine was the battery when I had to charge it at a gas station after leaving my light on while pumping gas. It failed me 2 other times before that. Better safe than sorry and stranded in the winter months. Get it checked.

Batteries are cheap, just replace it.

same thing happened to my '07. The dealer ran the load test and told me that the battery was no good. 25% covered since it was under 3 years but over 2 years. I just went to costco and bought a new battery for $75 w/ 5 year unconditional warranty.

Hmmm... my '07 is coming up at 2.5 years now... I hope my battery isn't dead soon.

The funny thing was, like the OP, there was no warning of this happening. One day the car drove and started fine. The next morning put the key in the ignition and nothing came on. All my dials swept across maybe three or four times, then blank. Figured it was the battery and charged it. Took it to the dealer the next day and they told me about their stupid 25% coverage warranty on the battery.

I would suggest purchasing an Optima battery if you have to buy a new one.

id agree with andrew on this and say its probably connection issue. charging a battery for 5 min wouldnt really do anything specially from a 100% flat to being able to start the car in 5 min dosnt make sense. its also pretty hard to kill a battery to the point where no lights come on.

there is usually some kind of power even if it's really dead, some sort of light. Connection issue. If you are getting a new battery RED all the way!

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good battery for our cold Canadian winters.
I bought a Costco battery and replaced the 5 year old OEM battery but it does not seem to work very well.

Unfortunately, when it comes to batteries, it's a hit and miss situation. Unfortunately you might have gotten a melon.

Get yourself an optima and call it a day.

I have an optima yellow top.

When the old battery was getting yanked out it was almost half empty even though I had been to the dealer for an oil change (shut up, i go so i have a record of maintenance on my car.. the oil gets drained and replaced within a day) and they "inspected" the battery. Was a bit disappointing to see how cheap the construction looked as well.

^-- what Scottish said. We did the same to my car just before the bitch decided to give me shifting issues at the end of the season. But for those brief two days while everything was working, starts were glorious.

WOW! Walmart sells the Optima? I am thinking of going with the Red Top - I only drive during Spring/Summer/Fall and my Battery is dead (of course) after being stored for the winter. Pulling my 8 out of storage in 4 weeks (can't wait!). I have heard a difference of opinion between red and yellow top. Any feedback?

if you store your car I would suggest investing in one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Schumacher-SEM-1562A-Speed-Charge-Maintainer/dp/B0009IBJAS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1299007401&sr=8-1

20 bucks and it will save you the hassle of worrying about your battery.

as for the difference in batteries, yellow is a deep cycle, red has more CCA. Here's a pdf on some of the comparisons: http://www.dcbattery.com/optimacatalog.pdf

I have a completely aftermarket stereo set up in my car so I went with the yellow top.

Throughly clean the top of your battery before storage. Current can follow the moisture and dirt that builds up, resulting in drainage.
