So I just met the coolest cop ever. We became acquainted at the side of the highway and the first topic of discussion was my trip up the on-ramp onto the highway. The conversation started thusly:

Him: "Hi, how are you?"
Me: "Hi, good."
Him: "So I hit you with laser while you were getting on the highway, you got up to about 80"
Me: "Really? That high?"
Him: "Yah, it sounded pretty awesome."
Me: "Really? Wait, what?"

Now, this guy was no more than 1 or 2 years older than me, if that.

Me: "Ha, really? Because it's completely stock." [The truth, about the exhaust :D:]
Him: "Well, it sounds a lot better than all the other cars around here."

He then pointed to my radar detector.
Him: "So I saw you hit the brakes real quick when I hit you with radar when I went to pull you up. Did you get anything from my laser hit?"

We then proceeded to spend a couple minutes talking about laser and radar detectors. He then asked for my registration, I already had my license out and had handed it to him.

Him: "So I'm going to write you the ticket for 5 over to save you some money."

He went away, came back with the ticket.

Me: "Man, I feel stupid, I normally go 68 everywhere in cruise control... it's just not worth it. Usually I'm out autocrossing almost every weekend but it's the off season now." [Also truth]
Him: "Yah, I like driving fast too, it's the best part of this job. Do you autocross in this car?"

And then we proceeded to spend another 5 minutes at the side of the highway talking about autocrossing. Where I do it, how often, when etc.

I'm actually tempted not to fight this ticket, I feel like it would be a betrayal, screwing it up for the next guy. This cop will eventually become too bitter to keep this attitude about his work. Heck, maybe I'll see him at the track this summer.

Man, you are the first I have seen take the traffic stop so well and accept the ticket with grace LOL. At least you and him were cool about it. Must like your 8?

Cool story and great attitude. Not sure of the law in your state, but I'd just take the online traffic class and call it a day. :)

If it weren't for the hit to my insurance, I'd actually consider just eating the fine. I mean, he's just a guy doing a job. He wasn't a dick, he wasn't condescending, he had a clue about driving and he answered my questions about laser :)

I'd been operating under the assumption that laser doesn't work in rain but he said it just has a lower range. They don't work at all in the fog though :D:

now why can't all cops be like this!

well atleast you had a good experience, but it does seem like a little bit of a betrayment if you fight it.

i had a similar experience with a cop who jokingly complained he had trouble keeping up with me through the twisting back roads, then he gave me a fatherlike lecture on the fact that there are deer and that they come any time etc. and he just wrote me up for 5 over, didn't fight it. Sometimes cops understand what the point is.

I'd fight it.
The coolest cop I've ever me was in a rave. He was smoking joints, doing rails, everything! When the party was over, he was like, Chad good party! Let me know when your have another! He waved to us outside, got in the cruiser, turned it on, switched the horn/siren and piglights on and sped off into the sunrise. It was absolutely amazing.
I hate cops.

Then why give it for only 5 over instead of what he said he clocked me at? Why not ticket me for no front plate? Why ask me about autocrossing? I mean, he acted like the guy delivering my pizza: He may enjoy his job (ok, maybe a bad example), but he still has to ask for my money.

Was it a WSP? I've ran into a few nice ones over the years. And even a very nice Mercer Island cop.
You got lucky,

You got lucky,

WSP, the onramp was onto I-5 south, the conversation was on the side of 405 south. I think if I hadn't started getting going again on 405, he might not of pulled me over.

I wouldn't fight it. What will it dent your insurance $2 a month? I mean its only 5 over. Don't tell your insurance, they only check once a year and then its only a year of $2 a month anyways lol. If cops were this legit with me I would probably never fight tickets, but I never get these (refer to my last thread on my ticket)

Good for you...taking one for the team. I only have another 45 days till I turn 25 and my insurance drops.

I've gotten stopped 4 times, only 1 ticket. 3 of the cops were cool because they gave me no tickets, the other was a dick. ;)
I believe I have threads on all my encounters.
