Strangely, I got a letter from Ford Headquarters that says:

"We are in desperate need to acquire several pre-owned by January 18th, 2004 in order to fulfill special vehicle requests. You have been identified as an owner of one of these vehicles... our new car managers have been authorized to buy back your current vehicle at above market prices. We would like to exchange your Mazda for any new 2003 or 2004 Ford. With factory incentives and high trade-in values, we feel confident that you can make the exchange with little or no money down and a monthly payment that fits your budget. "

Anybody else get this letter? Kinda weird.

It sounds to me like Ford is desperate to sell their cars. It has nothing to do with Mazda's buy back program. Ford is just taking advantage of the possible insecurity of RX-8 owners.

I'd have them buy my car and then go get another RX-8 hehe

It's weird, Mazda is 30% Ford owned so why would they try this?

It's just a marketing gimmick to get you into the dealership, sell your old car and buy a new one. Ford has no "desperate need" of used cars.

Agreed, that's NOT from Ford headquarters, it's just from some schmuck dealer. You can bet that they would structure the deal so you're getting average trade-in value and paying a premium for the replacement Ford vehicle.

When it says "You have been identified as an owner of one of these vehicles" - does it actually mention RX-8 by name? No, didn't think so. It's a generic form letter to sucker people in to get to that dealership.

Gordon

That's an old sales pitch.

Yea, I thought it was probably just some type of sales pitch. Just wanted to make sure. That'd be cool if I can just swap rx-8s. I'll post some pics of the letter if i can get my cam working.

I get these letters from our local Toyota dealer for my daughter's '00 car all the time.

They are throwing out the hook and line to find that vulnerable fish!!

Take over your loan, pack it into the new car, lengthen the term and WHAM your in a new car!!

Entirely right. They talk about in Confessions of a Car Salesman (http://www.edmunds.com/advice/buying/articles/42962/article.html). Very good read, imho.

I saw it posted elsewhere and worked my way through the whole thing. What an eye opener! And what a scummy business to be in!!

Here's the envelope and letter, just for info. Sorry for the large pics (don't know how to adjust size):
