My Dealership Story

Hello All,

I figured that I would share this story and see what you guys think. I have a WWP 05 Auto RX8 GT with approximately 109,000 km on it. It is fairly stock and has had the following parts replaced recently: CAT, front and rear O2 sensors, engine mounts, spark plugs and coils and wires.

Ok, so about 6 weeks ago I got a check engine light and I took it to the dealer and they said that it was due to low compression and that they were sure that it was the metering oil pump. Of course, the part needed to be ordered. about 4 weeks after that(with a lot of complaining) the part finally arrived and it was installed. Luckily, I split the cost 3 ways with the dealer and Mazda Canada.

So heres the kicker, the metering pump was installed on a Friday and the check engine light came on again the following Wednesday. I took it in again and they said it was firing the SAME CEL code!!!! They said that they needed to keep it for a while and work on it with Mazda Canada. So they gave me a rental car (a Mazda 3) and I have had it for about 1 and a 1/2 weeks.

I'm a little scared that they are going to have it for a while, any thoughts?
Has anyone been in a similar situation?

I have a feeling that they need to replace the engine but they probably dont want to admit it.

What was the code?

Often they don't have a clue what's wrong...and tend to throw parts at it till it's fixed

Before they do anything expensive post it up here so we can give you some impartial answers

Thanks for the quick reply. I do not know what the code was. They didn't tell me and I forgot to ask.

I will definitely post as soon as I hear something.

I miss my car!!

Ok, so I got the call from the dealer. As I expected, it needs a new engine.

They said that the engine would arrive in a week or two so I could pick up my car until then.

So now I have my car and am waiting until the engine arrives.

You should get back the 1/3 you paid for the "metering oil pump" because that was BS.

I think a lot will depend on the dealer you're using. The dealer that I used said the same thing initially about the OMP but later when I pressed them for doing the compression test they backed off and said it was the engine only that needed work ( read replacement).
As far as rental cars, I've had a rental since Nov 28 and the motor is back ordered. The dealer has told me to just keep driving the rental as my car is not drivable.

Well I have to say that the service has been quite good. The people at the dealership have been very good so far.

I hope that I dont have to wait for the engine too long.

Does anyone if the engine that they give you is BRAND new or is it just a refurbished one?
Also, does the new engine come with a new 8 year warranty or does the original warranty just continue?

At this point in time it's hard to say whether you'll get a new engine or a remanufactured one. More than likely you'll get a reman. But they are a lot better than they use to be. Good luck.

Yah, I am in the same boat. Just had a remanufactured engine put in and it is even worse now that before. My catalyst converter was also turned to slag and replaced. I've been in a stupid mazda 3 for about 2 months now.

What happened after they put the new engine in? Did it have the same symptoms?

I think it has a lot to do with the dealership's skills/experience

Is the engine even the source of the problem in the first place? Even it is, was it installed properly? Etc etc

I got a reman, and it has been running strong. No problem. The tech who worked on my car is a rotor head himself, has a lot of rx8 experience, plus he knows that i am a maintanence freak so that helped in speeding up the diagnostic

Ok, latest update.

I got back to work from the holidays and Mazda gace me a call saying that the engine was delivered. I was surprised since it has only been about 2 weeks since they told me it needed a new engine.

So i dropped it off today after work and they said it would probably take about 2 days.

I will be sure to update after I get it back.

Wish me luck!

Well I took it it on Monday evening so I dont have it back yet. They said that they would need at least 2 days so I'm hoping that I get it back tomorrow.

I will update this thread as soon as I get it home.

Ok....so I got the car back yeaterday evening and I must say there is a significant improvement.

The car is a lot faster than I can remeber, especially off the line!!!
It also runs a lot smoother when driving around, no more jerky shifts.

Although, I did notice that it kind of has a rough idle sometimes when I was stopped at a light. I will wait a couple of days to see if it goes away and then look into it if it still occurs.

Your Throttle Body is going bad.

Its not a major problem, but most people have it and they dont know it.

Lucky the good Guy @ Wayne Mazda caught mine right after engine replacement, and replaced it before my B2B runs out. Car is perfect *knock on wood*

he is referring to "drive cycles".. a drive cycle being a period of driving the car from when it's fully cold to full operating temp.. various loads... etc

that's to reset the ecu, what laythor was referring to is after you reset the ECU, it needs a few "drive cycles" to relearn fuel trims.
