View Full Version : Anyone able to help me with Stats?
J8635621 12-14-2009, 09:44 AM I have a take home final and I've been trying everything to get it done, but I have the worst teacher in the world (Dr. Johnston iirc). In a little while I will scan the pages onto here. I just need to be able to put the dataset into JMP, and then know what values to look at. This is STA 2381 Intro Statistical Methods. Should be easy stuff if you have any clue what's going on. These are the 2 datasets I have to use.
J8635621 12-14-2009, 09:44 AM Using temperature dataset
1. A. Is there a linear trend in the temperature since 1902 using Annual? What is the model? Give a measure of how good the model is. Is there a linear trend in the temperature since 1902 using Ave5? What is the model? Give a measure of how good it is.
B. Are the 4 quarter centruy periods the same with respect to Annual? Ave5? For Ave5, if there is a difference, which quarters are similar?
C. If we just look at the last quarter (QuarterCentury=4), for Ave5, is there a linear trend? What is the model? Give a measure of how good the model is.
D. Can we draw a conclusion by comparing A through C? Comment.
Using CellGR dataset
2. A. What is the correlation of the 2 agents? Is it equal to 0? Greater than 0.8?
B. What is the slope of the model if we were to use A to predict B? Is it zero? Is it equal to 1?
J8635621 12-14-2009, 09:53 AM Any help at all would be appreciated. Like look at r squared for a measure of how good the line is.
J8635621 12-14-2009, 10:28 AM I will pay you for your time granted it gets me a decent grade.
Islixat 12-14-2009, 11:08 AM no offense but being able to figure this out with use of the internet (and not paying someone online to do it) is a very necessary skill of being able to perform on the job after you graduate, even if the subject has nothing to do with what you plan on doing for a living. Im betting if you cannot figure it out you can go to the professor and they can point you to sources that will help you complete it, and speaking with the professor will at least let him know you are trying and might even make your grading more lienent. Learning how to learn on your own is worth all the time you have to invest into it.
and as a side note, is that stock paint with fancy lighting or did you have different paint put on?
J8635621 12-14-2009, 11:13 AM Stock paint without any kind of lighting. That is an untouched photo I believe. The sig picture was made for me. I totally agree it is better to try and figure it out on your own. The entire class made below a 20 last time when we tried that last time though. I just need pointed in the right direction.
tza0001 12-14-2009, 11:23 AM I guess your professor does not have an rx8:))) This is a regression problem and yes the r-square would indicate how well-fitted the model is (relationships between the depedent and indepedent variables, the hidger the r-square the better relationship). High r-squares though might also mean multicolinearity problems. You can figure out linear relationships from looking at the graph you get after running statistics. I can't open your file from work (due to annoying restrictions) so what I am saying is just based on general knowledge.
I agree though with Islixat! You should let your proffessor know about the problems you have! Good luck with your final!
Islixat 12-14-2009, 11:32 AM the whole class made below a 20 on the final...i take it in your school you don't have to pass the final to pass teh class? If an entire class had failed a final at my school it would look really bad on the professor, same could be said for if most of the class made an A though. Was it overly hard on purpose and then scaled based on performance of the top people in the class?
I as well cannot download files onto my work computer, and it has been long enough i would have to do research to figure it out anyways... when i get off work i may look at it and see if i can find a good website for you that explains stuff though since you just need pointed in teh right direction i might remember teh right keyword to googlefu.
J8635621 12-14-2009, 11:46 AM It wasn't the final. Yea it should look bad on the professor, huh? He said it was "our fault and we should be ashamed." I'm headed up to school to sit down with the teacher and figure some stuff out. Hopefully it helps. Thanks for everything so far.
Islixat 12-14-2009, 12:26 PM i had a similar experience with a physics prof once, but teh final exam was a dept made test and when his class wasn't even close to where the averages was he wasn't teaching after that year. (apparently it wasn't the first time it had been an issue)
tiltmode43 12-14-2009, 12:56 PM I'll hit this up when I get home in about an hour to see what I can do. After a quick glance I should be able to help you with all of it...
If it were so critical to your success after graduation, the professor shouldn't be assigning a take-home exam in the first place. You're utilizing your environment and resources, nothing wrong with that, aside from morality :)
J8635621 12-14-2009, 12:57 PM You have no idea how much that would help me. Thanks.
tiltmode43 12-14-2009, 12:58 PM Post the data sets as an excel file, I'm on a computer that can't read JMP...
J8635621 12-14-2009, 01:05 PM Alright here they are.
Islixat 12-14-2009, 03:35 PM If it were so critical to your success after graduation, the professor shouldn't be assigning a take-home exam in the first place.
i can't think of anytime at work where ive been told im not allowed to research how to do something i don't know... nor can i think of a senario to know something (other than of course the basics of how everything works) on the spot. Although knowing things make everything go smoothly and much quicker.
On the other hand though, i had plenty of take home exams that were made to be tough enough that either you would spend way more time than you should (the tests generally said the had a "time limit") or you wouldn't get it all done. The point of them wasn't to test how well you knew little details, but how well you knew overall concepts and could use that to look stuff up. But then the tests were scaled afterwards so not everyone would fail. I haven't looked at this test to see if that is the case yet or not, but hopefully you can teach while providing the help.
J8635621 12-14-2009, 03:37 PM It's not hard, just have no clue what to do. I'm almost done now though.
J8635621 12-14-2009, 04:22 PM Finished and confident in my work. Teacher is way more helpful in person than in class.
