Singaporeans celebrate Chinese New Year with 'lucky undies'

Singaporeans are ushering in this year's Lunar New Year with "lucky undies" emblazoned with monkey cartoon characters and traditional red prosperity characters.

The Straits Times newspaper reports that more than 1,000 pairs have been sold since their arrival in Singapore from China in late December.

A red-headed "funky monkey" cartoon character is one of the popular items.

The underwear comes in pink as well as red, with the Chinese characters reading "luck" and "prosperity".

"According to Chinese belief, wearing red underwear, especially in the Year of the Monkey, will bring you luck because some monkeys have red butts," shop owner Jeanette Chong of ButtOn Trendy Undies said.

The underwear starts at 5.90 Singapore dollars.

The same thing applies to some areas of Mexico, where they believe wearing yellow underwear will bring good luck. It's just a culture thing. And if this turns into any kind of racial discussion I'm closing it.

We also have a custom here in Australia its called a.

" PAPER BAG JOB".

Upon finding a sexual partner thats not so appealing facially we proceed to hide their faces with a" Brown Paper Bag "before we make out with them .(Known as paper bag job)

It saves you from having to look at a not so pretty lovers face., but it does not bring good luck but plenty of fun and sexual practice. HA.HA.HA

This method was used by most of us in our younger days when we were doing our apprentiships in love making, and werent to fussy as to our partners looks.

I'm Chinese, and the Year of the Monkey isn't all that lucky. :P I guess compare to the Goat year it is.. who the heck wants to be a Goat?

Luckiest year is of course Dragon... Guess I'll have to time it just right when I have my first kid... 9 months prior... that year..etc.. I think my wife will think I'm nuts :)

We have a similiar custom here in the US we call it beer goggles. It doesn't have anything to do with what you are wearing however but instead it has more to do with how much beer or alchoholic beverages you consume. Apparently (as many of us can attest to) the higher the blood alchohol level the better the people around you start to look. This is why my buddies and I used to judge the people around us by their "beer number" so a perfect 10 was not necessarily such a good thing :D .
