View Full Version : 7 mpg what would you do ?
rx8james89 12-03-2009, 05:09 AM Ever since I put an ap decat pipe on my car i've been getting extremely poor fuel economy, I'm doing on average about £100 a week in fuel but I love the noise and better throttle response, oh yeah and the backfires, just wondering if anyone thinks it's worth it?
nvrfalter 12-03-2009, 05:20 AM it's not the midpipe. i'd check your coils, plugs, and wires.
rx8james89 12-03-2009, 05:26 AM If I got it serviced by mazda would they replace all of that ?
nvrfalter 12-03-2009, 05:31 AM if you wanted them to. they wouldn't just replace them unless you're under warranty and they determined that there was a problem with them. or unless you paid them obviously.
just as a sidenote, it may not be a great idea to go into a mazda dealer with the midpipe on. i would order the parts from mazda and just go to a reputable local shop. just my 2 cents
rx8james89 12-03-2009, 05:44 AM Will this definitely help with fuel consumption, don't really want to spend too much as I'm getting the pz in a couple of months.
mscamp02 12-03-2009, 05:56 AM It should most definitely improve your gas mileage. But honestly I wouldnt take it to a dealer or anything and just do it myself because its a real easy job. And will only cost you a few hundred for all of the necessary parts

£100 a WEEK in fuel?? I'd definitely sell that Hummer, James, and buy a Japanese car...
fuwenxu 12-05-2009, 01:14 AM put some backfire video on Youtube!! then Your 7 MPG is worth !!! lol
Anijo 12-05-2009, 02:08 AM I got 6mpg once... during an all-day autocross practice day. I've heard a few local 8 friends complain that their mpg went down when they got after market exhausts because it made their cars sound so much better so they drove more aggressively to hear it.... could that account for your mileage? :D:
rx8james89 12-05-2009, 11:22 AM I do drive agressively because I love the noise and flames but 7mpg, you got to draw the line somewhere, when my friend told me that a lamborghini does more than that I was distraught, maybe it's time to grow up and forget about noise and flames i think??
rx8james89 12-05-2009, 11:25 AM And yes fuwenxu it is on YouTube but it still doesn't make me feel any better lol.
SPHINX144 12-05-2009, 12:12 PM on the bright side when you own a v12 Lamborghini or Aston you won't notice much of a difference in fuel efficiency.
Anijo 12-05-2009, 12:17 PM Also, are you running synthetic oil? I noticed an increase in my mileage in stop and go traffic when I switched... but could easily be he placebo effect. Try this, next week, drive as conservatively as possible. It takes a lot of will power... lol, but see if it doesn't get you back to the 16-18 range.
Brettus 12-05-2009, 01:03 PM Ever since I put an ap decat pipe on my car i've been getting extremely poor fuel economy,
did you put the pipe on ?
Are both the o2 sensors plugged in ?
Do you get a cel ?
Have you cleaned your MAF at any stage ?
stewiefied 12-05-2009, 01:15 PM oh its worth it i say get a 2nd job to pay for the fuel
i think it might be an o2 sensor idk im just guessing tho
8 Maniac 12-05-2009, 03:05 PM It's midpipe should definitely not be the problem. Driving aggressively will definitely lower your mileage (it happens to me every time I change something with my exhaust). That said, you'd really have to be driving hard to get 7 mpg... I seriously doubt you're driving anywhere near hard enough to get that low.
As others said, check coils and plugs.
rx8james89 12-05-2009, 04:17 PM My friend put it on is there a chance it could be loose I'd imagine that could fuck up my fuel consumption apart from that everything seems ok, I've ordered new ignition coils so that should help.

possibly the best quote of all time !!!

When you install the coils check out the DIY forum to help with the installation.
Good Luck
zoom44 12-05-2009, 09:17 PM i would suggest also that taking your foot off the floor and upshifting would increase you consumption.
just sayin....
fuwenxu 12-06-2009, 02:50 AM And yes fuwenxu it is on YouTube but it still doesn't make me feel any better lol.
hahaha...can you give me the link.... feel bad for you .... I get about 14-18mpg and I do drive aggressively too... lol
rx8james89 12-06-2009, 04:23 AM Don't know how to put links up but if you type in rx8 spitting flames and the user name is called fairbouy.
rx8james89 12-06-2009, 05:04 AM Right I'll take everyones advice drive sensibly and stop dipping the clutch just to hear that loud shotgun bang, change my coils, what about petrol I've always run it off super should I swap that for a week see how it goes ??
Winfree 12-06-2009, 09:31 PM A back fire is an explosion of gas someplace other than an engine.... not really good for machinery and at that rate of gas consumption you must be just about letting liquid run out your tail pipes....
Look - why not just make a good CD of assorted pops, bangs, revs, and engine noises, and play that over your loudspeakers - and take off the junk and tune her up so it is so quiet you are not sure that it is running.... Then you can have mpg and noise!
I recommend a Ferari, an H.D., and an old Chrysler Nascar for noises, but a turbo and an extra rotor, if you want some speed, or just put a couple of drops of oil in with your sparkplugs and enjoy the the James Bond style smoke screen ( do not do this in a nice clean garage)
