View Full Version : new winter whip
exsequor 11-05-2009, 04:55 AM so i got a new addition to exsequors car family. 1988 volvo 740 turbo sedan wit 4 speed manual with OD. im in heaven. this is like the most practical fun car ever. i feel like i could get hit by a pickup truck and do collateral damage as well lol. i would have totally underestimated this car if i didnt drive it. 167xxx miles for $1200! yep. :evil_laug
ok and i think im n ow addicted to turbo. it is a amazing and beautiful thing here in colorado.
renesisgenesis 11-05-2009, 02:47 PM how much horsepower?

CyberPitz 11-05-2009, 03:57 PM Wow, 167k miles, I'm surprised it hasn't blown a Head or something [/sarcasm]
Nice buy!
exsequor 11-06-2009, 12:50 PM how much horsepower?

184hp stock
don't know but its suprisingly torquey lol
YES:bootyshak:D::beer05:
edit: btw it weighs 3000 pounds (look it up).
JRichter 11-06-2009, 01:04 PM ok and i think im n ow addicted to turbo. it is a amazing and beautiful thing here in colorado.
Yeah, torque/turbo is a good thing here at 6200 feet. A car like the RX-8 can feel absolutely neutered compared to how it feels when driving around in an area closer to sea level.
9krpmrx8 11-06-2009, 01:26 PM Dude! my girlfriend in high school had that same car!!! It was a tank and lasted well over 200k. Rock Solid. I was always surprised because I had heard how unreliable they were.
josuar88 11-06-2009, 01:27 PM Id say sedan is rear wheel drive If I remember correctly. I thought they only came with 160hp hmmmmm? Nice beater though

They made 160hp with the 4 speed slushbox. lol i read a couple places the 4 speed manual with OD generated 184 stock.
edit: i dont know fur sure tho lol. tho ive heard so far though that getting over 200 hp in her takes some pretty basic mods. im thinking headers, exhaust and intake would free up enough power to get 200hp.
josuar88 11-06-2009, 01:48 PM Good stuff man I hope you can it will be able to beat our rex's though? =[[[
Feras 11-06-2009, 02:08 PM ^^ it doesnt take much to beat the rx8 im afraid...doesn't mean the 8 sucks though.
exsequor 11-06-2009, 02:12 PM hahaha im pretty sure it gives us a match already! :). at least in a straight line lol. it definitally cant turn like a mazda lol.
its a beautiful thing though. its cheap, reliable, and suprisingly fun to drive. I would recommend them as beaters. at least the turbos.
RickA 11-06-2009, 03:35 PM Dude! my girlfriend in high school was neutered
dude, seriously
Jethro Tull 11-06-2009, 06:05 PM This car is going to nickel and dime you to death. No, wait, it's going to $50 and $100 you to death.
The good part is, it's like a Subaru in that you won't give a crap if it gets dinged and dented since it's nothing to look at anyway.
:rollingla
exsequor 11-06-2009, 06:38 PM Haha thats funny you say that. I spent $350 replacing the whole rear fuel pump setup yeasterday which was why I got it so cheap. Basically they sold it because on hot days it would vaporlock after warming up and they didn't want to pay and fix it.
They bought it in 2001 as the second owner, and I guarantee you they put a shit load of "nickel and diming" in. Fresh brakes, belts, headliner, headlights, moonroof assembly etc. They probably got fed up after one of the fuel pumps started to die so they sold it (my theory lol).
There is a volvo specialist shop I trust and I took it there and they told me I got a great deal due to the mechanical condition and the condition of body/interior. They couldn't find any problems.
edit: don't curse my luck though;).
exsequor 11-06-2009, 06:43 PM dude, seriously
lol i was dating a chick a couple months back with a turbo volvo. it was probably a 740 too! I didn't care much about her volvo at the time (didn't care at all).
buuuut. now that I own one and its a fine breathing example of the vehicle I have to say volvo makes a pretty good car. though ugly.
kersh4w 11-06-2009, 06:50 PM my mom had a volvo 240 DL with over drive.
it lasted 240,000 miles. she put a for sale $350 sign on it and it was gone that afternoon.
it was still running strong. but trim pieces and things were starting to fall off. mechanically though, it was golden.
dannobre 11-06-2009, 07:34 PM I had a 1971 142E...Bosch electronic Fuel injection....
I had 380K miles on it when I gave it to my uncle when I graduated from university
Still on original bottom end....all I had done to the engine was knurling the valve guides and new valve seals......Bottom end is a tank.....
Learned a lot about how to fix the fuel injection...it was an early Bosch attempt..and a bit of a PIA to keep running...
White_Shadows 11-07-2009, 12:57 PM lol I went to school with someone that was obsesed with these.
exsequor 11-08-2009, 03:59 PM i stayed up in denver this weekend and i enjoyed being able to climb effortlessly up monument hill in 5th (OD) at 85mph. I cant wait til i can turbo a 8. what type of highway mpg do turbo 8s get. do they sit at a higher or lower rpm when cruising as opposed to n/a?
Feras 11-08-2009, 05:25 PM turboing your car doesn't change the gearing, and the mpg will all depend on when the turbo spools up. If you cruise in vacuum you'll see an mpg increase, if you're boosting all the time the mpg will be lower. My WRX will get 32mpg cruising at 65 on the highway 27 at 75, 24 at 85 and cruising at 100+ <18mpg guess where the turbo starts boosting in 5th gear.
