View Full Version : Never Redlined... :/
YeepsRX8 10-28-2009, 12:56 PM So I bought my new 8 about a week ago. The guy told me he redlined it twice from when he got it which had about 13k miles on it. It currently has 68k miles.
Now I know redlining the car is good to get rid of carbon buildup. How would I know how much carbon has been built up from him never redlining the car and how would I fix that so I don't have something majorly wrong in the near future?
:dunno:
Thanks.
dozer 10-28-2009, 01:03 PM now that you have it, go redline happy :p:...that or you can use seafoam to clean it out, OR do what i like doing, redzone-ing it :) go past redline to about 9.3k then shift :fruit:
WOW. I would have walked away from the sale..
Run it hard ans see what happens in the future. You still have the 100K warranty.
YeepsRX8 10-28-2009, 01:13 PM Anyone near RI that could help me out with the seafoam?
Kinda new to this Rotary Engine. And yea I should have done more research but now I'm stuck with the car. Nothing else I can do. I was looking at Smoke Honda's RX-8. Shoulda got that one instead of this one. :/
Oh well...
Yea so anyone near RI could help me out with the seafoam? I mean redlining it just once or like every day driving? Also what gear should I redline in? 1st?
rodjonathan 10-28-2009, 01:17 PM yeah run it really hard and do what dozer said too also some seafoam wouldnt hurt
dozer 10-28-2009, 01:24 PM redline when you want to, the engine is really rev happy...yeah redline 1st 2nd and 3rd if you can...3rd gear redlines at 91mphs so be careful not to get caught, i like to redline when ever i get the chance too

Thanks, so about the seafoam.
Do you know the steps to do it or should I just go to my mechanic and have it done?
kersh4w 10-28-2009, 01:27 PM take to a dealership and complain of loss of power.
they will seafoam it for free.

It's in the warranty? Like I'd probably have to pay for the labor still right?
Jedi54 10-28-2009, 01:38 PM Seafoam is easy, there is a D.I.Y. by NYCGPS in the diy subforum
How's the car running now?
you could just buy a few bottles of BG44 and pour it into your next 2 or 3 tanks of gas. It should help clean up the carbon
renesisgenesis 10-28-2009, 01:44 PM Wow. Why buy an rx8 and never redline it? well at least it has lots of low end power so you don't need to be at high revs to get performance.....oh wait.

Car runs fine. But when I'm driving in 2nd gear it kinda pushes me back n forth when I'm like in traffic just moving slowly. But I think there is a loss of power because when start going in 1st gear its wicked slow and sometimes I'd have to rev it before going since it tries to go under 1kRPM..

LOL, the guy was like in his 30's and didn't look like a person who would go over 7k. I guess he thought it was a piston engine and redlining it would destroy it rather than maintain it.
YeepsRX8 10-28-2009, 01:55 PM ~THINGS TO DO~
Okay from what you guys stated these are the things I should do now.
1. Redzone-ing
2. Seafoam
3. BG44
Now should I use BG44 and Seafoam or just use one or the other? Or I could use both? Also, how long do you think I should go redzone-ing? Everyday I drive for a week?
Jedi54 10-28-2009, 02:08 PM don't go crazy with the redlining.
Simple rule of thumb: one redline a day keeps the carbon away. ;) Also, redlining in 2nd is probably the better option as it's easier on the transmission.
One thing I've always done when buying used cars is to service them right away since it's hard to know what maintenance (if any) the prior owner did.
- Change Oil and Oil Filter
- Change spark plugs www.blackhaloracing.com has then for $80 shipped
- Flush transmission / differential. use OEM fluids or Redline. (check your manual for fluid specs)
- at your current mileage, I'd recommend changing the ignition coils as well. You can buy OEM coils at www.onlinemazdaparts.com or you can look into an upgraded coil kit.
- Flush Radiator fluid
as for the seafoam or BG44k, pick one or the other if you're pouring it into your gas tank.

Which Coil Kit would be the best for the 8?
JTtheDude 10-28-2009, 02:23 PM Get the BHR ignition upgrade

Jedi54 10-28-2009, 02:26 PM Yeeps: "Best" is very subjective term
I will say this: I went through 3 sets of OEM ignition coils in the past 4 years. The OEM's are hit or miss, some people get good life out of them, others do not.
I now have the BHR ignition kit and am loving it. I fully expect this ignition kit to far outlast the OEM's.

Links dozer?
dozer 10-28-2009, 03:12 PM no link thats their direct website, you arent gonna find them any cheaper than that at least i dont think so :suspect:
Gr8Bullet 10-28-2009, 03:14 PM ^The FS section but thats rare!
YeepsRX8 10-28-2009, 03:20 PM That sucks... So I see you guys are from Cali... Seems like mostly all the RX-8 Owners are mostly west coast
dozer 10-28-2009, 03:32 PM ^well a lot are from the westcoast, socal is the most active group in the US
YeepsRX8 10-28-2009, 03:37 PM Sucks, I'm ALL the way to the East. Closest people are like Connecticut or New York.
Jedi54 10-28-2009, 03:38 PM all the cool kids are in SoCal. :D:
CyberPitz 10-28-2009, 03:46 PM All the losers are in the Midwest :lol2:
shallowater 10-28-2009, 03:51 PM Car runs fine. But when I'm driving in 2nd gear it kinda pushes me back n forth when I'm like in traffic just moving slowly.
i think that is normal in traffic.
But I think there is a loss of power because when start going in 1st gear its wicked slow and sometimes I'd have to rev it before going since it tries to go under 1kRPM..
that should be normal as well since 8 does not have too much torque at low RPM..
but correct me if if am wrong.
JTtheDude 10-28-2009, 03:56 PM That's the lowest considering your spark plugs are good too. If you don't know their condition it would be wise to get them at the same time as the ignition kit, which makes it around 560 I think. I don't have the mod but there are a lot of people that do and I haven't heard any complaints. The next time I need to replace my ignition I will be looking at this.

by reading this forum thats the way it would seem lol....hardly no love for eastern KY lol
Gr8Bullet 10-28-2009, 06:07 PM lol just red line and seafoam.... to buy parts you gatta pay the prices. lol

I sense Troll.
Well goodluck with the car!!!
I recommend going in 5th gear and redlining it, that'll get rid of all the carbon you ever had :)
CarAndDriver 10-28-2009, 09:40 PM Good luck. The RX-8 is a finicky car compared to something like a Honda Civic. Make sure you have spare dough for 8 maintenance and unexpected issues.
RIWWP 10-28-2009, 09:54 PM Sending you a PM, but I live in Providence RI, I can certainly meet up with you to check things out, show you some stuff hands on, rather than reading. More than happy to assist. I would have seen this thread earlier if I hadn't been crawling through south side Chicago stores today :)
Kusanagi 10-28-2009, 10:22 PM Most 8 drivers do redline few times a day to rid of the carbon, however I still think it doesn't generate enough heat to do that. When I go for a hill run, I keep my rpm at 5000-redline for about 20-30 minutes for each run, and shift only between 1st-3rd gear, the engine definitely runs much smoother after that.
So when I don't go for a hill run, in normal traffic I would use 2nd gear and keep at about 5-7000 rpm, this way I won't go over the speed limit and have enough air for cooling. I keep it in 2nd gear for about may be 5-10mins, and keep varying my speed a little, which means don't keep at the same high rpm for too long, vary between 5-7000rpm, all the way to redline isn't neccessary imho, just adding stress to the bearings.

yea... we redline just to get rid of carbon :mdrmed::mdrmed:
TopGear8 10-28-2009, 10:33 PM It's possible that he just told you that he never Redlined it... Maybe he did it all the time and just didnt want you to think he was abusing the car or something..
