View Full Version : help - Check Engine Light on, Strong petrol smell from exhaust
nuove13 10-21-2009, 10:38 PM Hi guys, need some help here. i have the check engine light on everytime after reset and mazda says it's due to incomplete combustion triggering the O2 sensor. They have said that the strong petrol smell from the exhaust is an indication.
any idea how to solve this problem?
alz0rz 10-22-2009, 12:03 AM could have a fuel injector stuck open or a failing ignition component (coils/plugs) not completely burning the af mix and thus pushing a crapload of unused gas out of the exhaust.
to start with you need to get the CEL code, we might be able to go from there.

Hey Alz0rz, thanks. Let me get the CEL code and at the same time do a check on the fuel injector + ignition component.
have been grasping at straws with clueless mechanics from Mazda and workshop!
alnielsen 10-22-2009, 01:29 AM alzorz, is right. Could be something bad in the ignition system. A bad plug or coil. Or, a loose plug wire. Pull the spark plugs and take a look at the electrodes.
nuove13 11-05-2009, 07:35 PM the fault codes are..... p0410, p0420
so i'm going to go mazda and replace the faulty parts.
nycgps 11-05-2009, 07:38 PM You have a clogged/Dead CAT
get it replaced. Free if you're in the USA, under 80K miles 8 years.
why I said that?
AIR system problem (P0410) rarely happens, you *might* get this CEL due something blocking the intake, but rarely happens. USUALLOY if you have a Clogged/Melt/Melting Catalyst Converter, The engine keep saying *wtf I cant get enough air in !!!!* cuz ... the air is not going out ! :)
to be sure, is your engine "loud as fuck", and no matter what you do your car just wont rev/ go faster ? :)
P0420 ... well, CAT is not doing its job, or Rear O2 sensor is bad, so yeah, its bad anyway.
nuove13 01-19-2010, 10:12 PM man, u hit the bullseye.
i changed my cat and sensors under warranty and problem is solved. =)

bkkkk93 01-23-2010, 05:29 PM i am having the same problem and wondering what year your car is? and do you have any performace upgrages that would ruin your warrenty. im servicing my car on monday and have a injen cold air intake i am wondering will i still be covered under warrenty?
alz0rz 01-23-2010, 05:35 PM if you have the stock airbox you might as well replace it before taking it in, if you're dealership wanted too they can make a fuss about it..
bkkkk93 01-23-2010, 05:51 PM true but from what ive been reading people have been saying that the dealership wont care what aftermarket part you have on as long as it doesnt relate to the problem so do you think my intake did cause this or should i just play it safe and replace my stock?
nuove13 01-24-2010, 07:17 PM There was a turbo installed previously but i made sure i took it out before sending it to the dealership. I'm not sure how strict yours are but i didn't take any chances. Mine is an 07 model.
the changed teh Cat and replaced the O2 sensors and also checked the air/fuel mix.
there have been no more problems after.
Kash5983 01-26-2010, 10:12 AM The same thing happened to me and I had to get my catalytic converter and air pump replaced.
bkkkk93 01-26-2010, 06:38 PM yeah me too i just got mine back from mazda today and got my cat replaced and was wondering who ever else had theirs replaced was their strong burning smell? is this normal?
