View Full Version : Why I live in Wyoming
doccable 01-12-2004, 12:26 AM Many people ask me why it is I choose to live in Wyoming, especially at 7200' above sea level. Snow, cold, no people for miles...not to mention the wind... I was finally able to go out for a little drive today in what is essentially, my backyard... where I was able to take the attached photo. I should mention that with over 27 Million acres of public state/national land, roads with the sign shown here are quite common. :D
sup3rbad 01-12-2004, 12:37 AM you dare go 120 in the snow? good luck. that must be awesome in the summer time though.
XDEEDUBBX 01-12-2004, 12:49 AM what the f#ck...are you serious??its like a baby autobahn in your backyard...
doccable 01-12-2004, 01:47 AM Actually, most of the snow has melted off of the roads...well, the roads that have been cleared, anyway. This particular road is closed about five miles after this point, with snow drifts averaging 12' in places...:D But when it's open in the summertime, it is an absolute joy to drive. Right now, all that travels up here are snowmobilers. This photo kind of suggests what one really needs up here...

mmmdowning 01-12-2004, 05:51 AM How funny. Had no idea.
PTPerformance 01-12-2004, 10:30 AM You must not like me being a local....
I went to TECH there
Xenophanes 01-12-2004, 01:29 PM You can't be serious. I think this image was photoshopped. The sign color looks orange instead of yellow, like someone painted out the normal 65 mph or 75 mph numbers.
I looked up the Wyoming laws and:
75 MPH on interstate highways §31-5-301(b)(iii) & (v)(A)
65 MPH on other highways §31-5-301(b)(iv) & (v)(B)
30 MPH in an urban district §31-5-301(b)(ii)
20 MPH in a school zone or crossing §31-5-310(b)(i)
Damn... 20mph in a school zone!?! School zones are 15mph here...... and it is 25 in most urban districts. Interesting. Doesn't seem like you have any 45/50/55 mph zones like we have in CA.
According to what I found on Wyoming state law 75 mph is your max speed limit. Now... you may go 120mph there, but I doubt it is legal. I think Nebraska is the only state which doesn't have speed limits on some highways (maybe also Idaho?). Of course I could be wrong, but I think a bit of healthy doubt would do us good with this post.
If someone knows better than I would be glad to hear it.
demonfire 01-12-2004, 01:39 PM Yeah that's a PS.
revhappy 01-12-2004, 02:59 PM I have driven extensively through western Wyoming, which is the least populated porton of the state and the fastest speed limits were 75 MPH through some VERY rural areas.
Gandu 01-12-2004, 04:55 PM I agree, I completely agree with XENOPHANES. Speeding is wrong. No matter, even if we are fortunate enough to drive one of these state of the art cars. Basically, speeding is wrong.
120 Miles Per Hour? Are you kidding me? I dont even want to think about driving that fast. I remember a few days back one member wrote a very smart comment. It went something like this:
"Cars Come, and Cars Go. But we as living bodies get only once chance."
XENOPHANES, thanks for your post. I'm totally against speeding.
2004 Mazda RX8 6 Speed Manual & 1992 Mazda MX3 V6.
Adios...
serff 01-12-2004, 05:44 PM there are a few states that have places with no speed limits now. And i'm sure WY is one of them. Why have speed limits when no one is around...;)
I think that it was an obvious photoshop, & I doubt that the original poster's intent was to trick anyone, more to get a good laugh out of you all.
However, since everyone is taking it seriously... Pay close attention to the sign. It is a 'caution' sign. Thus, displaying a recommended maximum speed for the up coming curves, and I seriously doubt that the state of Wyoming is recommending 120mph liesure drives through the mountians. I think most speed limit signage in the states is white background with black lettering, and caution signage yellow/black.
mazdabob 01-13-2004, 12:29 PM I can't believe some of you thought the sign was real. Are you all so young you don't remember the 55 MPH National speed limit? It was introduced in 1974 during the alleged fuel crisis. Then, in 1987 states were allowed to raise the limit to 65 on certain freeways. In 1995, the law was repealed, and states were allowed to set there own limits, like before 1974. In Montana, on some highways, the limit was whatever was "safe & prudent". But, after several years of people coming from all over the world to go fast, they set the max at 75. The National Motorists Association was instrumental in getting the speed limits changed. Here is a link to the state's speed limits - http://www.motorists.org/issues/speed/StateSpeeds.html

WY does not have roads without speed limits
8_wannabe 01-13-2004, 01:20 PM Boy, you guys need to lighten up. It was an obvious joke for your amusement; don't start looking up state vehicle codes to disprove it!

ranger4277 01-13-2004, 04:19 PM I like jokes... almost as much as common sense. :)
Xenophanes 01-13-2004, 04:53 PM Ok. I must defend myself a little. This wasn't an obvious joke. I don't know what the speed limit signs look like in BFE. I saw the picture and thought, "WTF? 120mph." So I looked up the laws out of curiosity. Judging by the posts from previous people it appears as if they didn't know it was a 'joke' either. So don't get huffy with me man. Wasn't obvious. Wasn't implied. I was curious about the laws in WY.
hotpot 01-14-2004, 07:51 AM 75 mph = 120 kmh
Maybe that Wyoming has adopted the metric system.
The sign-maker, "WTF is kmh?", thinking it was a typo error, marked down mph.
This is the only plausible explanation I can think of.

Hmmm.... How about PHOTOSHOP? Anyone with a modicum of common sense knows that any road anywhere in the U.S. that is subject to closure due to 12' snow drifts, is probably not going to be rated for anything higher than say 45 MPH? As a couple of others who were able to tell that it was a photoshop job said; lighten up.:D
Sheese. It took me all of two minutes to P/S this, how long did it take to look up the statutes?
did some climbing up in JH, you guys have some sweet ass 5.28's + and stuff in the Teton's!!!

people coming from all over the world to go speeding in Montana ? That's a joke. IF you are interested in the real reasons why Montana went back to a speed limit, then take a look at my POLL in the LOUNGE Forum. The truth is, that the accident rate doubled after they implemented the speed limit again! Highways that are constructed the right way, are safer without speed limits.
mazdabob 01-14-2004, 11:32 AM I agree with you on speed limits. But I saw a report about rich people from Europe and other places shipping their expensive supercars over here just so they could drive fast in America.
Xenophanes 01-14-2004, 01:08 PM Took me about 25 seconds to find the WY laws. Google is a wonderful tool. Doy! Again... I was curious. How long did it take you to post a reply to this thread?

It's so funny how some people just don't get it!
You started the joke.
doccable 02-17-2004, 09:49 PM I figured it was time to add some new photos... none of these are photoshopped. These and more can be found on the Rocky Mountain RX-8 Club web site!
doccable 02-17-2004, 09:53 PM This was the drive home from getting the ECU flashed the other day... I took a turn that I knew would take me a little out of the way to get home...
doccable 02-17-2004, 09:56 PM I took the turn I did only because I knew that the Colorado State Partol was lurking up ahead... this was one of the better "mistakes" I've made!
z00m-z00m 02-17-2004, 09:58 PM :D 120 .. Great photos btw next to the mountains, makes your car look extra small though :D
doccable 02-17-2004, 09:59 PM These locations are all along CO. St. Hwy 14, between Ft. Collins and Walden, CO. Which is right along the Wyoming/Colorado border. :)
Omicron 02-17-2004, 11:12 PM Beautiful Doc!
93rdcurrent 02-17-2004, 11:41 PM Photos are great. Gandu, I normally don't say this but come on... Driving fast is great fun and exhilerating. Not everyone can handle fast speeds I will agree and I am not suggesting going 120 mph on the 101 in the San Fernando Valley. But in the middle of god knows where without a soul in sight when you can see for miles ahead of you... now that's heaven. I have been at speeds in excess of 160 mph in one of my cars and not just once. I loved it. Haven't you ever driven into Las Vegas? That long straight road where there is nothing for miles. Can't think of anywhere I would rather be except maybe San Clamente when the surf is going off with my favorite Jeff Hubbard bodyboard. Stop making me think of the ocean when I am stuck in winter hell.
