Subbie we love you- leaked image of new car

Several sketches have leaked out featuring the Subaru-branded version of a coupe co-developed with Toyota. Although supposedly not yet green-lit by Subaru, the car is continuing to push forward as a Toyota.

Toyota will debut their FT-86 concept at the Tokyo Motor Show later this month. Details of the concept were sent out in a release earlier this week, with Toyota confirming the vehicle's use of the Subaru 2.0-liter Boxer engine. The engine could be tuned as high as 200 hp, a 25% increase over its normal output.

The Subaru sketches show a car that looks near-identical to the photos released by Toyota. The differences between the vehicles are more or less cosmetic. Subaru's vehicle has a third brake-light built into the spoiler. Tailpipes appear to be hidden as well, while side mirrors have been left off altogether.

However, the rumor-mill is suggesting that Subaru is grappling with the decision to push forward with a self-branded version of the car. The company has carved out a niche for themselves in the auto industry for providing all-wheel-drive vehicles. Meanwhile, the coupe under development is believed to be rear-wheel-drive for both auto makers.

The benefit of building the car is that Subaru will have the opportunity to freshen their image. With sales of the Outback, Tribeca, and Impreza flagging, a sporty coupe may be exactly what the company needs. Subaru was one of the few auto makers to come out of last year's industry-wide tailspin in decent shape. The automaker will be looking to build momentum into 2010 and 2011.

It looks like a Toyota FT-HS concept I saw in a Road and Track magazine a few years ago. A lot of the concepts I see look pretty similar, so I hope if both Subie and Toyota are building versions of this, they can differentiate them enough for them to stand apart from one another.

i think its just early sketches. the ones that are shown in japanese magazines look like this one, but more of the FT-86 look.

Meh, I want to know price, and weight before I even think about this.
I wouldn't mind this being AWD from Subbie, but they might think it will cut into WRX sales, but w\e

I don't think the platform can accommodate the AWD drive-train. They don't have to have all AWDs in the lineup.

No, I just crave an AWD low weight coupe. its sad that the only one to do it cost effectively was Mitsubishi... and they suck for not doing it again.

UPDate on the Sketches

[UPDATE 10.08.2009] Subaru Coupe design sketches have been removed at the request of Autocar magazine, the claimed copyright owner of the sketches. Autocar originally reported, "these sketches are from inside Subaru" leading WCF to believe and report that the images were genuine. Apparently, Autocar's statement is false. Therefore, for future reference, be careful what you read at Autocar, it's most likely fabricated.

I don't see the point - Toyota uses Subaru engine?
Subaru makes same car with different tail lights?
New Subaru is the only car in the lineup without AWD?

Why bother....

you need to check yourself imo. The EVO 8/9 never lost a comparo in C&D to an STi in stock form and the Cobb STi never beat the Vishnu EVO in thier tuner tests either. The STi has always been an understeering plow horse compared to the neutral EVO and still is. I have a 3100lb AWD Mitsu coupe with over 206,000 miles thats never had the valve cover removed and still runs a 12 sec 1/4 for $2000 invested (rims excluded) with compression still within factory spec pushing 20psi on pump gas daily with an 18G compressor wheel. Plus I can change spark plugs in 8 minutes without getting dirty, try that on a boxer!

Also: new subie = tribecca banged a civic. All the new subies are so fugly no enthusiast would consider them but for thier 1/4 mile times imo, and Id still pick 20 other cars first when it comes to signing the loan docs.

on the tarmac the evo is more neutral and I think drivers and money made subaru more successful in wrc. Id rather wrench on the 4G63 than the boxer any day, turbos hanging right out front, head can be removed with ease, exhaust is straight forward and it can handle more boost on the stock internals. btw has any US network picked up wrc? Citroen and Ford seem to be owning these days.

Douche or not Im glad to see youve edited err corrected your original remark about AWD Mitsu coupes. Im aware of the difference in coupe/sedan body styles, just comparing what reality has to offer.
