View Full Version : GI: Metal Underbody Tray
leechieboi 10-05-2009, 03:01 PM I work at a machine shop. My underbody tray got torn to shreds from being lowered and I'm considering fabricating a metal one for myself.
Don't know if there's already a company making them but if there's enough interest I'd be willing to fab up more to sell.
Also since I'm not a guru on all the functionalities of the tray, I'd need some input from people who do.
So how bout it?
nycgps 10-05-2009, 03:09 PM It serves as road dirt/rocks blocker, and It directs airflow to the bottom, creating more downforce so the head of the car wont "lift" up under high speed.
rotarykillz 10-05-2009, 05:18 PM I'd love to see something like this. Try and fab it so that it doesn't hook up to any of the external body parts (like the front bumper) so that aftermarket bumpers won't get in the way.

HIGH SPEED in an 8? :scratchhe.... only an MS8 can do that!

if you wanna tell me horsepower = Speed, then you can keep those comments to yourself
To me, Horse power does not mean speed, a car with 50 hp can go 100mph, can it handle that speed is something else.

Rotr8 10-05-2009, 08:19 PM heres what Brice was working on a couple months ago, dont know if it ever made it to production though,,,

without the bottom of the bumper attaching the to undertray, the mazdaspeed front bumper would wobble all over.

I need one!
JinDesu 10-05-2009, 08:30 PM Interest!
Doesn't it also facilitate the exit of air out the engine bay on the bottom?
leechieboi 10-06-2009, 03:18 AM ok cool. now what's the difference between the vertical vanes the oem tray has and the horizontal ones brice has?
Krazed_Rx8 10-06-2009, 03:22 AM PM me when your done w/ em

Those are louvres, they let air exit through the bottom, not sure why so many of them are there, you dont want too much air escaping before the rad,,,
9krpmrx8 10-06-2009, 11:06 AM I would buy that in a second. Someone please make it.
leechieboi 10-07-2009, 01:37 AM the more people interested the more likely it's gonna happen. there's a huge price difference between qty of 5 and 30
-=lil red=- 10-07-2009, 01:48 AM I'd be interested in one.
Targatheory 10-08-2009, 12:15 AM Ya but something like this would probably come out to over 200 easy. Plastic is good enough, especially for the vast majority of 8 owners.
leechieboi 10-08-2009, 12:37 AM yea but seeing as the cheapest i've seen a replacement tray go for is 140... to a lot of people it would be worth it.
especially if i can get enough people to bring the price down to around the price for a new tray
i'll work out the numbers soon and see what a realistic amount would be
madcows 10-09-2009, 01:01 AM When I bought my 8, it was missing some parts, including the under engine tray. I ended up buying some aluminum sheet metal, and angle irons and made one myself. I did add any vents (I wonder if I should), but it ended up costing me around 50 bucks if I remember correctly - which is cheaper than oem. It's not the prettiest thing, but it works just fine to me. I'll take some pics during the day if anyone wants to see.

Red_Fox 10-09-2009, 03:57 PM that looks tight!
rodjonathan 10-09-2009, 04:15 PM id buy one right now that would be so much better than the plastic
TeamRX8 10-09-2009, 08:46 PM So you'd rather crack/break the front bumper instead?
9krpmrx8 10-09-2009, 10:58 PM So you'd rather crack/break the front bumper instead?
Oh, Yeah. Good point.
leechieboi 10-15-2009, 01:14 AM dont know how it would damage the bumper. pretty sure the fender well liners would flex enough underneath. plus my undertray got damaged not from hitting it but scraping it constantly little by little going over speed bumps or up an incline that leveled out. the hole just got bigger and bigger til it cracked completely.
btw didnt have time to get any more specs (price) since our company's been going through an audit but i should have more time now that it's over.
Motomouse 10-15-2009, 05:22 PM I will buy one if you make them and the price is right
madcows 10-19-2009, 10:34 AM Sorry it took me a while to post these phone pics of my home made under tray (don't mind the missing condenser - lol). It's just 4 aluminum L angles (the front curves with the bumper) with a sheet of aluminum riveted together with an aluminum U-channel going through the middle from left to right for a bit more support to the sheet metal. It's currently held in place by screws attaching it to the old vertical pieces pieces of the tray assembly, and is pretty sturdy. It cost me roughly $40 or $50, so it was more economical than OEM, plus it's just kinda neat.

9krpmrx8 10-19-2009, 11:34 AM I want one.
G3tR3DDY2GR3DDY 10-19-2009, 12:02 PM Brice wanted to charge over 400 dollars for it and noone would have paid that, thats why it hasnt reached production... along with all of Scott's other ideas
