This poll is especially for mental pimp, who seems to appreciate them so much. Which 10-year period hosted the greatest rock (or rock-and-roll)? My pick: 75-85. Pink Floyd released The Wall and Wish You Were Here (though admittedly Dark Side of the Moon came out in '73, maybe the greatest rock album of all time), Beatles transitioned from the group to 4 incredibly talented individuals, ELO was rockin', Aerosmith, Elton John before he turned too gay, lots of the best Eagles work, Journey's Infinity released in '78, Rumours by Fleetwood Mac ('77), and on and on. In my opinion, 75-85 is the Golden Age of Rock!

P.S. If you want to vote early than '55 you need to start surfing the Cadillac web sites. ;)

Hey pimpster, you should start a poll of your own: "Which is the stupidest poll on this forum!" The best thing about doing a poll is you get to pick which items to choose from.

Oooohhh la la a new poll - I love these

It's a tough choice between 65-75 and 75-85 -
I chose the Billy Joel era.

The only explanation I can think of is these kids don't call the current batch of music "rock." It may be a dated term. Between rap and hiphop and who knows what else, they don't think of it as rock, so don't vote for that timeframe. Think about it... what real rock groups exist today that aren't from the 70s or 80s? All I can think of is "pop" or hiphop, but no true rock that originated in the 90s.

i don't really think there are any good "rock" bands these days, so I had to go with 75-85, even though I think the 80s was the worst musical decade ever. I'd have rather voted for 70-80.

Sorry to break the "no 95-now" streak. And surprise I'm not a youngster. Although I grew up on Ted Nugent, Black sabbath, Rush, Kiss etc. I prefer the Rock of today. You say "but no true rock that originated in the 90's". I'll name a few that fall into this category: Live, Godsmack, Korn, Staind, Linkin Park, Stone Temple Pilots, Creed, Red Hot Chile Peppers, Nirvana, REM, Smashing Pumpkins, Garbage.

Of course this is a matter of personal taste and choice. I still listen to the late 70's and 80's stuff but prefer the updated sounds of today's "Alternative Rock". It's definately not "Pop" or "Hiphop" like Wannabe said.

Ok, TJRX8, you've got a point. But Nirvana was all pre-95 since Cobain died in '94. REM and RHCP's best years were the early 90s. The rest in your list I don't pay much attention to, that's probably because I'm an old coot and consider them fads. But if they are late '90s and what you would call good rock, then I'll concede you have a point. I'll have to take your word for it.

Same here, but '83 - '91 would be perfect! I still like new stuff too, but the connection with music around during your most impressionable years tends to stick closest to you.

well as one of those youngsters..(under 25) I voted for the 75-85... Granted 85-95 was also up there but 95-present is not.

I do listen to modern rock and all the alternative rock I can.. I will give you that Live is definitely up there(even though Throwing Copper was 1994). But your list is really still really close to 1995. SP was gone by 1998 and STP's best stuff in my mind was really early (around 95 was plush). Its really tough because that grunge wave gets split between 2 groups. I guess I classified the grunge era in the 85-94 time period. Man i loved that Garbage/SP concert I went to in 97 though!

So what I have a problem with is all the canned and overly produced pop/rock/hip-hop. Thats the problem I see with current mainstream groups like Linkin Park and most of the hip hop music. All the commercialism I see today from Britney to every single dang boyband reminds me of a punk song by Reelbig Fish: Sellout! Maybe I am getting old.. haha I am not even 25 and am no longer "with it"!!!

I am just saying that if you look at most of the current bands I fail to see them having the staying power like the Stones, Jimi, the Beatles, or of course Elvis. The only one I could see would be Nirvana. But then again its my opinion so take its for what its worth.

So in conclusion(hehe I feel like I am writing a thesis), there really there are a lot of bands I like. First, you gotta like lenny kravitz. Plus, some bands that don't get enough air play are Tool and Radiohead. Also, there is still a lot of good Punk that doesn't get heard much.

The Beatles, Led Zep, Hendrix; nuff said.
Stone Temple Pilots is the most under-rated 90s band. They posessed the spirit and feel of the above mentioned groups. They lasted from 92 to the end of 02 and were all about variety; from hard rocking heavy riffs to super melodic acoustic grooves. From punk to psychodelic. If you never got a chance to see these boys perform live you've missed out. Their frontman Scott Weiland is a mixture of Mick Jagger, Jim Morrison, David Bowie, John Lennon, Perry Ferrell, James Brown and Perry Como.
Unfortunately his drug addiction has stifled their career.

Edit: To clarify, there are two great myths our younger generations must get past in order to have a clear view of the world. #1: That McDonald's food tastes good. #2: That boy bands produce quality music. It seems like GenX/GenY are making progress towards overcoming both these myths. If not, all hope for the future is lost.

Re Lenny Kravitz - I can't get past his use of a Grade 2 Rhyming Dictionary for his songwriting... Check the lyrics for 'Fly Away' if you haven't been annoyed by this before!

I wish that I could fly
Into the sky
So very high
Just like a dragonfly

I'd fly above the trees
Over the seas in all degrees
To anywhere I please

Oh I want to get away
I want to fly away
Yeah yeah yeah

Oh I want to get away
I want to fly away
Yeah yeah yeah

Let's go and see the stars
The milky way or even Mars
Where it could just be ours

Let's fade into the sun
Let your spirit fly
Where we are one
Just for a little fun
Oh oh oh yeah !
(etc)

:D

Gordon

Talk about trips, anyone ever done Dark Side of the Rainbow? That's where you watch Wizard of Oz with the sound off, instead listening to Dark Side of the Moon at the same time. It's awesome, you will see the lyrics of the album synchronized to what's happening in the movie. Do a web search and you'll see what I mean.

Some examples: When they say "Round and round" you see Dorothy's house spinning round and round in the tornado.
During "black and blue, and who knows which is which" you see the two witches, one dressed in black, the other in blue.
"Balanced on the biggest wave, race towards an early grave." Dorothy is walking atop a fence then tumbles into the pig pen.
During the female vocals of "Great Gig In The Sky" the singer's voice rises and falls in intensity as the house rises and falls in the sky.
"to come up behind you again ..." as Professor Marvel is coming up behind Dorothy.
There is much, much more; you get the point and you don't even have to be stoned to enjoy it. Rock on!

Just pulled up my old link; you can find one of the best DSOTR sites here (http://members.cox.net/stegokitty/dsotr_pages/dsotr.htm). But search around for others; its cool comparing what they say. The key to making this work is to start DSOTM at just the right moment. Read up and they tell you how to synchronize.

damn..we do actually have some cool folks here....(musically)..i figured the majority were Spears Heads.....

Definitely 75-85 although i would like an extention down to 69 and 70....you have some major events there as well..Woodstock ends as well as one of the best rockers of all times..Hendrix dies on Sept 18, 70....so really i guess it would be a twenty year span for me 65-85....

You can't forget Steely Dan, the early works of Grateful Dead, Jim Croche...blah blah...

but yes.. the most amazing Pink Floyd...I was lucky enough to catch their last tour as Pink Floyd in '94....saw them in both Birmingham, AL and Atlanta, GA.....AWESOME.....you are correct 8_wannabe....DSOTM coupled with Wizard is creapy but amazing...even better watched while "enhanced"!!

But I do have to give it up to the latest of the great musical inspirations...Dave Matthews Band....great stuff.....wonderful lyrics, wonderful musicianship....fantastic in the realm of supporting the protection of our environment, that so utterly is overlooked and continues to be destroyed....

Alan Parsons Project. So good it's eerie.

Saturday I was watching an old Saturday Night Live show (you know, with John Belushi, Jane Curtain, Aykroyd... all the great ones.) Their musical host was none other than Frank Zappa. I had never seen him before, but he sooo rocked. His music was very untraditional and fit no style I have ever seen. I'm sure this is no news to Zappa fans, but somehow I missed out on him over the years. If you check out Pimp's rap poll, there are some parallels: Zappa was more incanting than singing, about life in the 'hood or wherever he grew up. It was enchanting. Maybe best described as what you get when you cross the spirituality of Santana with the defiance of Eminem.

I'm definitely gonna get a Zappa CD. Any recommendations?

I really hate polls that just boil down to "what generation are you from?".

Anyhow, I was about to bitch about how anyone can discuss 75-85 without noting, first and foremost, the punk rock revolution of '76-'77. The Ramones, Sex Pistols, Clash, Saints, etc. One man's poison, and all that, I guess.

TO WHAT??? There is so much sound-alike, non-inventive, all I need is an MTV video with lots of T&A, no-talent crap out there right now that it makes me want to puke. There are very few 'artists' out there right now (and I use that term loosely) that will be remembered in 30 years. But there will be ample material for the One-Hit Wonders and Where Are They Now? shows.

Can't say I'm a Lennon fan, but at least he was a great song-writer. Floyd and Zeppelin were simply incredible, innovative musicians. And Zeppelin gave us a wide variety of musical styles ranging from rock to blues to ballads. Much of today's music is pure marketing and nothing else.

BTW I am the only one here that doesn't like Pink Floyd, let alone think they are great? My brother used to torture me with DSOTM and that dang "Money" song.

The same was said about KISS in 1974 and a long list of others over the years I'm sure. I would venture to say that our kids and grand kids will remember just as many bands from today that we do from "back in the day"...and so on...

"I am gross and perverted

I have existed for years
But very little has changed
I am the tool of the government

For I am destined to rule
And regulate you.

You will obey me while I lead you

Absa-freakin-lutely.......

Occasionally when we all have time, one of the "rock" cover bands i was in when in college get together we always play Wasted Years....talking about a killer guitar riff, I love playing it, it is totally amazing that in the days of the modern disgusting Pop era...that you can still mesmerize a crowd and have them totally freaked by playing such an AWESOME tune!!!...

quick question for you klegg....how did you like their latest, "Dance of Death"...cause you know Bruce returned....

I think when you do decades of rocks, next time go with the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's and so on. This is how the are viewed in the music industry.

wakeech
01-15-2004, 01:30 PM
well i for one will venture out into yet-unmentioned territory and throw another curve: i'd say post '95 has had rock musicians which have been at least as "good" (i have no idea what you guys are judging "good" by... musical abillity?? "song writing" ability?? amount of nostalgia (which immediately relates how cool a song is to events in your life around the time you first liked it)??), and some considerably better than that of the 70's (which is the height of "classic" rock in my view).

of course, sadly, post '95 misses out on the whole grunge/alternative thing (which i was never into very much in its heyday, i was "Down With OPP" if ya know what i mean).

anyhoo, the underground movement is the centre of all that is richeous and authentic in current music, in any genre you listen to. those who're lesser known and unpopular are the only ones who have the freedom to experiment, and spend more time on creating and performing music rather than on their hair, makeup, wardrobe, and scoring multiple groupies.

my absolute favourite of the last two and a half years has been the Broken Social Scene (click the goddamned link in my sig, NOW... you owe it to yourself).
bands from earlier, like Blur ('97 with their oft-copied hit "Song 2"), Flaming Lips (i think they span a whole two or three of the decades above), Modest Mouse, the Distillers, and on that same girl-punk tangent Biff Naked (not so much underground anymore, but she isn't all that popular and a Vancouverite), and one of my absolute favourites Make Do Think Say (go and find a copy of "& Yet & Yet"... seriously), the Strokes (minimalist rejection of pop rock), the White Stripes (instant classic band from the release of that song which i can't remember the title of that had the video with them in legos), lots and lots of bands i can't think of 'cause this isn't an article as much as a continuous thought where i run out of bands off the top of my head, and for all you metal hair fans out there, Brit-rock's latest import The Darkness. they're popular, yes, but it's still their own, for now. go buy thier disk, you'll love it.

and for a sampling, download one of Do Make Think Say's latest, "Horns of the Rabbit", and The Scene's "cause = time"... and "almost crimes" as well. do it.

edit: come to think of it, the Scene has RM files right off their site that you can stream... here is a direct link to "cause = time" (http://www.arts-crafts.ca/_working-html/mediafiles/youforgotit/Cause=Time.ram)

what i like most about it is that it's so tongue-in-cheek... it's fun, and not disrespectful, but still very much making light of the whole thing.

did you listen to the song(s) i suggested yet?? if not, do so.

Boy I don't know I think that maybe it would be best to use a 20 year period and say from 78-98. I grew up in the late 70's early 80's punk era of LA. Sang for punk bands in highschool and was quite the young terror. Most people seem to have forgotten about the beauty of bands like Crass, Sex Pistols, Cicle Jerks, Fear, Black Flag, etc. And then we had cool dance stuff too. All the glam-rock stuff was so short lived that most bands are only made fun of today but when you have Sex Pistols music being redone by so many people today you know that they must have had a huge influence on the genre of their time. (Let the flaming commence) ;)
