View Full Version : power loss and slow starts!
burtonride0 09-26-2009, 02:29 PM i have a 04 6 speed with 100020 miles and i just started noticing a big difference in how my car is. First when starting in it takes alot longer to start like it almost doesn't want to. And when im driving in low rpm and accelerate it almost seems to not want to go with no power. The other thing is around 80 mph when accelerating the coolant light flashes then goes away and it just doesnt sound the same at all either.
Ive already took it to 2 shops and they dont know. Ive gotten coolant and oil replaced and replaced ignition wires, coils and plugs and its still acting the same. I dont know what it is but if you guys know let me know this is a problem i want to get fixed soon.
lol to bad you went over 20miles over the 100k warranty lol or did you take it to the dealer before? if not then this is a true fail

You might have low compression. Do a de-carbon cleaning and start doing pre-mix to improve compression. Please give us a full history(including parts and service done) on your RX.
burtonride0 09-26-2009, 07:34 PM so do you guys think that my engine is about to die or is there's something that I can do to fix this?
mysql101 09-26-2009, 07:45 PM coolant light is common. just replace the overflow bottle.
get seafoam or the mazda cleaner and run it through the engine. it should help.
after that, if you're still worried, get a compression check to see if it's worn or OK.
burtonride0 09-26-2009, 08:41 PM alright yea I'll try those things out and see if that helps
Old Rotor 09-26-2009, 08:51 PM What about the other question?
burtonride0 09-26-2009, 09:00 PM what do you mean?? ...I got all of that stuff replaced
shazy 09-26-2009, 09:57 PM lol to bad you went over 20miles over the 100k warranty lol or did you take it to the dealer before? if not then this is a true fail
Seriously, if it was this... then I feel terrible for you. That would seriously suck.
Good luck!
Check the cat.
tntmst 10-09-2009, 09:16 AM I'm curious as to how things turned out???
I'm having very similar problems that started yesterday. Well its been starting slow for about a week, and then yesterday it started to hesitate when accelerating from a stop. Drives ok when rpms are past 2500, but power even seems low even when driving.
I haven't took it in yet, but i changed the oil yesterday after it started to happen, I was probably about 2,000 miles past an oil change, but I did keep the oil topped off, just did not get around to changing it. hope my laziness did't just make me have to get a new engine. besides this time oil changes were done regularly for the 2 years i've had the car.
Anyways I'm going to change spark plugs, wires, and maybe coils tomorrow, while i'm at it I'll give the seafoam a try as well. my car has 70,000 mi on it. its a 2005 AT. it completely stock, with the exception of a optima yellow top thats about 8months old.
Nemesis8 10-09-2009, 09:25 AM Slow long starts, and loss of power on an '04 means one thing - your compression is down. Most likely due to apex seal wear from being under oiled, and also carbon buildup.
I had the same problem earlier this year. I have been running LC FP+, BG44K, and Seafoam through it, along with the Mazda Zoom-Zoom cleaner. I have managed to clean it up a bit, and she fires right up now. But I still have a slight power loss. I'm at 81K on my '04, and have a record of compression results with the dealer. They are just waiting for the day it gives up the ghost.
Since you are over the 100K limit with the Mazda warranty, you might as well just pull it and have it rebuilt. There are several forum members here that offer that service.

Only one oil change over? 2k over what, 3k, 5k? If you only went over on the oil change once, you are prob ok from that. do the usual, as you said you are gonna do, coils, plugs, wires, and see how it does then and report back. Also, look at your plugs, they are a good indication of what is going on.
jmc23200 10-09-2009, 10:10 AM When you went to the dealers with this problem, were you under 100,000 miles? If you were, you can fight with MazdaUSA to get them to honor the warranty because the problem was apparent prior to the end of the warranty, it was just mis-diagnost by 2 dealers or twice by the same dealer.
I would clean your engine like stated above ASAP. If that doesnt help, bring it to the dealer and fight. Your mileage from the last two visits will be recorded in their systems.
hkspoweredrx8 10-09-2009, 04:36 PM suggest seafoaming it or mazda's zoom zoom stuff. Try and free up some compression and see how it acts.
