View Full Version : Ok, dumb question: What is CAI?
slash128 09-23-2009, 11:15 AM This is! Hahahaha... My son and I installed my first significant mod last night in just under two hours. It was quite a bit easier than I anticipated. We also found a dead bird behind the air dam. So THAT'S what that nasty smell was a few months ago... Yuckkkkk :puke:
This is the MS CAI. It sounds nice :) Question about the install: There wasn't anything in the instructions about removing the tray that the old air filter box sits on. I was going to pull it out but it is supporting some hoses/wiring. Any advice on that?
MazdaSpeed exhaust scheduled for delivery today, hopefully have it installed tonight.
StealthTL 09-23-2009, 11:20 AM You can just leave the tray, or find new mounts for all the attached junk.
Taking it out increases the flow out of the rad quite a bit......

StormyWankel 09-23-2009, 11:26 AM I was getting the flamethrower ready...standing down
Well played sir, here I thought it was another noob seriously asking. When I had mine I just left it alone. But like stealth said removing it will increase the flow, so just devise a way to remount them. The exhaust should be easier than the intake, just get some PB blaster and it should be cake.

Yeah, I was the dumb noob that posted asking what WOT is. I figured this might cause s stir :) I'm really not that dense but I might as well have some fun with my mistake!
You mentioned 'when' you had yours. Did you take swap it back out for something different? If so: what and why? Just curious...
Thanks for all the feedback to everyone...
I swapped mine with another member for a Racing Beat intake I just wanted to try something different is all. Never had any problems with it.
b. verdin 09-23-2009, 12:22 PM i tried the k&n typhoon short ram and it jerked alot turning the engine light on, then i used an aem cai and it worked fine..

Well played on the thread title
For the exhaust, Just make sure you lube up the rubber hangers with WD40 real good and get two large screwdrivers to wedge the suckers out.
jessedrifter 09-23-2009, 12:57 PM hahaha +1 for getting flamethrower out. lol
RedRocket8 09-23-2009, 01:00 PM pretty funny thread  looks nice slash! can't believe a bird could wedge itself into that tight space.......

thx red! I think I know when the bird happened. I had to make a trip into Montana and I was driving, well, ummm, fast. Those passes have some irresistable turns :) Anyway, a few days later the car started really stinking. I keep it really clean so I couldn't figure it out. Then it went away. After seeing the bird last night that had to have been it. It was all dry and crunchy. It was wedged in real good so I figure it must have been during that Montana drive...

Or just be a man and work it with your hands :)
well played. i wonder how many birds have been found on this forum
slash128 09-23-2009, 02:26 PM So something I realized after getting the intake installed last night: looks like I'll have to pull the bumper off to clean the filter. It's not that huge a deal but wondering if anyone has found any tricks that are less time consuming? Bumper removal is easy, it just takes some time. I think that was the longes single task in the whole install process.
NoOdLe BoY 09-23-2009, 02:28 PM wow. wtf.
i had the same kind of bird in the same spot like 3 weeks ago.
it was stuck between the condenser and undertray.
it didnt smell or anything but it was hollow and still had all it feathers. i was pulling it out with some pliers and pulled some out. it was nasty. :(
adamwzl 09-23-2009, 02:49 PM fing birds :cussing:

The more you do it the faster it gets. Takes like 5 mins after a couple times
Especially after you break the brackets and lose some of the clips
Spoolin8 09-23-2009, 03:10 PM I saw the title of the thread and how it already had 25 responses and thought.... "My god, it must be getting real violent in there"

jack up front, remove under tray clips from bumper and you can reach the filter. it's what i do anyways.
Gr8Bullet 09-23-2009, 04:35 PM yeah after i installed my rb intake i just zip tied those hoses your taking about so some coved wires and stuff so it wouldnt get caught in the belt.

slash128 09-24-2009, 01:36 AM wow i just noticed the dead bird.. is that down by the radiator or something..
Yeah it was wedged down in there real good too!
slash128 09-24-2009, 01:40 AM So after taking the bird out I used the Dynolicious app on my iPhone and removing the dead bird got me an extra 50HP
Seriously tho UPS didn't deliver the MS exhaust today on account of road construction on my street so they are holding it for pickup tomorrow. I did get my spark plugs changed and AFE SS installed tonight woohoo!
xun4gvn4everx 09-24-2009, 01:42 AM Get 'er modded!!! :yesnod:
Atilla 09-24-2009, 01:53 AM seriously...i was wondering how this thread got to two pages and not shut down...i thought for sure this was a flame fest in here...
well played OP.
congrats on the new CAI - keep modding! :bigok:
nikkdizzle 09-24-2009, 03:04 AM i was about to flame the OP! haha
i saw it and thought...another one of these threads!?
b. verdin 09-24-2009, 07:18 AM 50 extra.. haha i bet..
slash128 09-24-2009, 11:08 AM Between the new plugs and the CAI (the original plugs and air filter had just shy of 50K miles, I know, I am a slacker...) the car has picked up some nice pep! The plugs were pretty nasty. I slightly overfilled the oil once and the old plugs seem to be a bit nastier than other photos I've seen. And the CAI sounds really sweet around 7KRPM at WOT. I can say that now that I know what WOT is :)
I pulled the old airbox tray out. The cable harnesses don't seem like they really have any slack to move around so I didn't bother tie-wrapping them. I pushed them pretty hard towards the pulleys but I couldn't get them to touch so I am thinking they probably won't have a problem during normal driving...
UPS is holding the exhaust for pickup today so I should have it on tonight! Can't wait to hear the whole thing!
Request for advice: I put in an XCarLink earlier this week. I haven't permanently fixed it anywhere because I wasn't sure where I would want it to stay, especially the mic. Anyone have a sweet spot they've found for the mic? The cable is too short to run up the A-pillar. I found a little vent looking set of slots cut into the panel just above my right knee (left hand drive). The mic clips there nicely, and if I unsolder it from the BT adapter I can run the cable through the slots and back behind the dash. Audio in test calls seem ok. Just looking for any advice before I go unsoldering the thing.
slash128 09-25-2009, 01:40 AM MS exhaust installed tonight. Man those rubber hangers suck to get off! Sure does sound sweet tho. I really appreciate all the DIYs and advice on the forum. It made these projects go so much smoother than they would have otherwise!
Final list of mods this week:
1) MS CAI
2) Spark plug change
3) XCarLink
4) AFE SS
5) Shiftstyle leather boot
6) MS exhaust
Thanks all!!!
