View Full Version : Teach me something about midpipes?
Munchy 09-19-2009, 01:25 PM 1. What exactly does it do?
2. Resonated vs non-resonated?
3. Works with stock exhaust?
4. Cop pushing hanger down exhaust = ticket? (with stock exhaust)
Thanks!

1. It is the pipe that usually contains the catalytic converter, between the exhaust header and the rear exhaust system (called the Catback Exhaust).
2 A Resonated Midpipe quiets and changes the tone of the exhaust sound. A Non-Resonated Midpipe is for a wide open/free flowing exhaust. This will gain a couple of more HP over a resonated midpipe.
3. Midpipes are usually made to work with the OEM components.
4. A Cop pushing a hanger down the exhaust won't reach the midpipe. It will get caught by the mufflers in the catback system.

1. a midpipe WILL replace your catalytic converter so make sure you know your area's smog laws. some places (such as california) are very strict when it comes to emissions and you can get in a lot of trouble for tampering with or removing the cat.
2. resonated sounds a lot better
3. yes, but it will be a lot louder
4. no, but they will hear you coming down the street and (if you get a dick cop) get you for excessive noise
Munchy 09-19-2009, 03:13 PM What's the difference between all the midpipes other than no res, 1 res, or 2 res?
I'm looking for something on the louder scales since I never plan on getting a catback...
I was looking at the AP midpipe which is dual res but people tend to refer to it as one of the loudest, then there's some non res aplications like the RX7store one which I'm presuming is silly loud...
The non-res always gives the CEL right? Does a res one give a permanent CEL too?
EMart11b 09-19-2009, 03:19 PM Removing the cat will result in a CEL no matter what.
Non res with stock catback isn't that loud it's the rasp and heat shield rattling that sucks.

not if you have the accessport.
non resonated sounds like crap. With a stock exhaust, even if you don't mind the sound, it will not be deep. It's like the bass has been turned all the way down.
Munchy 09-19-2009, 03:28 PM I'm looking for a deeper sound... Something like my bike used to sound like lol
two zero two 09-19-2009, 03:52 PM also on the illegality of it, if a cop hears you, pulls you over, and you tell him you're running a stock exhaust, thats gonna raise a whole lot of red flags and probably lead to a "you got a cat in there?"

if you're just looking for sound, why not just get a catback?

Why would you tell him your running the stock exhaust when you know it's loud?
I dont understand. Is this for people with zero common sense? Just say you have a catback... er, excuse me "different mufflers"
LOL at the coat hanger thing. What car built nowadays would that possible work on?

to address the issue of the CEL with a cat-less system, use a non-fouler. Its cheap and takes 10 minutes to make/install.
40thrx8whynot 09-23-2009, 08:06 AM what is a use a non-fouler and how can you make such a thing ??? i would really like to know
alz0rz 09-24-2009, 02:07 PM Doesn't work on the RX8. The 02 sensor is always expecting a certain voltage at diff times.. no way to temper that with a non-fouler...

This is true. My dual res mid sounds exotic kinda like this Ferrarri...http://www.ferraricalifornia.com/webapp/hear.htm?locale=en_GB

to which you respond, in my car? nah my cats at home with my pussy. If you can make a cop laugh, usually they wont write a ticket.
its weird the non fouler dont work on mine so i just left it in my trunk haha. But get the non resonated one from the rx7 store or the turboxs racing pipe is extremely loud. i myself like my agency power dual resonated midpipe shoot flames when i want it too and my greddysp2 makes it really deep bassy tone. i should post it on youtube with my setup
