View Full Version : Just got a second monitor!
staticlag 09-12-2009, 12:43 AM Nice!
Fun and all but I think I will only use it around 30% of the time that I am on the PC.
Top is a 24", bottom is a 22"

The Reverend 09-12-2009, 12:47 AM Nice setup, I have never seen monitors stacked liked that before.
Just curious, is there a point to having the lamp pointing at the wall behind everything? Besides looking cool I guess
dshiznit1489 09-12-2009, 12:50 AM Very cool setup.

Just thought it would look cool, but its really helpful for eyestrain actually. My eyes don't hurt as much as if I was in a dark room, and there isn't any glare on the screens themselves.
Its a CFL daylight balanced so it actually look exactly the way it does in real life.
Its bright enough to read a textbook by
Juansito 09-12-2009, 12:52 AM Why did you stack them?
I got 2 -- 21inch dell widescreen monitors side by side its like 1 huge screen.
YaXMaNGTO 09-12-2009, 12:53 AM That's freaking cool with the stack. I like that blue wall paint color.
I just put mine side-by-side, but once you have them, no going back.
Juansito 09-12-2009, 12:57 AM Heres a pic of how i got mine.

Space reasons mainly, this way I have the footprint of 1 monitor, I'm still in school so I need to put textbooks and stuff on my desk as well.
staticlag 09-12-2009, 01:06 AM The pics really don't convey how huge it is, Check out the size of a D^2P (Diet Dr. Pepper) can in the bottom pic
staticlag 09-12-2009, 01:11 AM The Wall mount is http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824994018&cm_re=ergotron-_-24-994-018-_-Product
Really an awesome mount! worth every penny, I can move it up or down about a foot, out from the wall like another 1 ft, or even rotate my display 90 degrees into portrait mode!
Juansito 09-12-2009, 01:11 AM Yea it is huge but the looking up all the time to see what your doing?

I have my monitors on one of those music producer type desks with 2 levels so they are raised about 14 inches above the desk. It feels like you are flying a spaceship when you have to look up at your monitors

Nice! I like those desks a lot, you must have a ton of space.
I was in a rear-end crash at a stoplight about 10 years ago and I can't look at something with my neck tilted down for very long
staticlag 09-12-2009, 01:21 AM I just wish there was more game support for multi-monitors! Granted having a stack wouldn't really be useful in the game :(

Jedi54 09-12-2009, 01:22 AM sweet setup staticlag.
I just got my Dell 24" and am probably going to use my Acer 22" as a dual monitor, just gotta rearrange my desk a little to make room
now you can hunt down rx8club trolls with ease.
ZumnRx8 09-12-2009, 01:35 AM this thing is sick looking!!

Dr.Pepper ftw. :p:
I have a hard time dealing with just using 1 monitor, I have to have at least 2, though at home I have 3.. :)

If you're wanting to add a taskbar to that screen btw, I recommend checking out DisplayFusion, it works great and it's cheap. (I contribute to it's development hehe).
Oh, and, Razer gear ftw. Can't quite make out what you've got though.. I've got a Lycosa, Mamba, and a Goliathus pad
Jedi54 09-12-2009, 01:49 AM holy crap Dark!
pr0n on 3 monitors?!
NeoAngelo 09-12-2009, 02:57 AM Wicked! I don't know if I could ever go back to three monitors. I used to work at a 911 dispatch center and everyone had three monitors (the supervisors had 4!!!). Everytime I look at a setup like that the nightmares come back. :/
Grats on the second monitor though! I love the stack, gives it a clean look. :)

I'm skipping 4 and going to 6 whenever I decide to buy monitors again, going to stack vertical
Huey52 09-12-2009, 07:44 AM People who live in glass houses, I mean who have glass tabletops, should dress their cables! ;)
I have the now-typical side by side [work and home] and it's great for referencing one document while working on another.
Three monitors are excellent for flight simulators tho'.
I too like indirect lighting.
Dr.Pepper ftw. :p:

Wow, I've never seen a setup like that either (well with just two monitors, I've seen 6 before 3 on top and 3 on bottom etc) but I dont really see the practicality of stacking just two.
So here's my suggestion to you to make it better. Get another wall mount like you had for the first and mount both of them to the wall side by side. that way you still have the space on your desk to put books etc, though at that point not sure why you just didnt buy a bigger desk instead of two wall mounts :)
paulmasoner 09-12-2009, 11:52 AM holy crap Dark!
pr0n on 3 monitors?!
try 5! (I am down to 3 currently though)
fwiw windows will support a stupid large number of monitors if you can drive them... My tower will support 14 thanks to a dual head GeForce and 3 quadhead Matrox cards I aquired from work. for shits and giggles i had 11 hooked up one day - couldnt find any more monitors lol. I have a pic somewhere, i'll have to look for it
Jedi54 09-12-2009, 11:54 AM I wanna see that pic if you can find it.
Krazed_Rx8 09-12-2009, 11:57 AM Hmmm... whats the point of all those monitors? :dunno: Just alt+tab it..
rx 8speciale 09-12-2009, 12:01 PM nice set up you all have , i only have my laptop 16" ....
dozer 09-12-2009, 12:35 PM thats bad ass, nice setup
RAZER FTW!
i have the lycosa and the deathadder
mscamp02 09-12-2009, 12:42 PM ^ lol I would love to see a pic of an 11 monitor setup....Ive been wanting to get another one to match my 22
mscamp02 09-12-2009, 12:43 PM oh and I got to jump on and say razer FTW....all I have is a diamondback though
DarkLord7854 09-12-2009, 03:48 PM Hmmm... whats the point of all those monitors? :dunno: Just alt+tab it..
That's the point.. to not have to alt-tab.
The Reverend 09-12-2009, 03:51 PM At what point is it more of a pain to scroll your mouse across 3+ huge monitors than to just hit alt tab I wonder.
mysql101 09-12-2009, 03:53 PM Hmmm... whats the point of all those monitors? :dunno: Just alt+tab it..
At work I have two console windows, each with 4 or more tabs. I am usually logged into 6 or more different unix systems at the same time. I also have email, Sametime, a web browser (with a half dozen or more tabs), and jEdit with a dozen or so tabs (for coding).
No way to be able to watch what needs to be watched by just alt tabbing. I would lose important information. Additionally I monitor live systems as they're processing.
So even with 2 monitors, it's cramped. I ALREADY alt+tab a lot within each desktop to swap between windows!
Since it's Gnome, I can not only just alt+tab between windows, but I have as many alternate desktops that I can rotate between.
Bigbacon 09-12-2009, 04:11 PM I only use two monitors at work other wise I don't have a reason. Too damn hard to develop stuff with just one monitor and I always end up with TON of programs and windows open. I wish I could have one more at work but there is no way.
rodjonathan 09-12-2009, 04:20 PM i actually had set up 4 monitors to make a HUGE square screen and wireless keyboard mouse combo to sit back and take it easy while i use the pc BUT it all burned down with my house :( when i get the next one ill get pics
Anijo 09-12-2009, 04:38 PM I used 3 for a while but then I moved and lost the desk space. The reason to have 3 is a fullscreen movie or game on one, 2 full size browsers on a second, and IM's and music on a 3rd :)
staticlag 09-12-2009, 05:10 PM I really wish I could have 2 or 3 at work. Incredibly frustrating to have to refer to pdfs or excel sheets and constantly minimize alt tab and move stuff around.
I would seriously pay out of pocket to have a multi-screen setup at work.
Just realized that I can use my citrix vpn (which I run on a virtualized win xp)on my top screen! Nothing like working on a virtual terminal inside of a virtual terminal
Anijo 09-12-2009, 06:28 PM I VPN to work, remote desktop into my dev box then KVM over TCP/IP to our lab. It's not particularly useable  And now we're putting VM's on our lab machines....
paulmasoner 09-15-2009, 05:54 AM I wanna see that pic if you can find it.
I'll look for it when i get back home later tonight

what he said.....
or if you're just a wannabe nerd like me.... in my case when i was using 5 monitors - I was hosting IRC fileservers, FTP sites, and uploading to USENET. While downloading from IRCservers, public and private FTP's, and USENET. Simultaneously repackaging, decompressing, converting formats, and burning to DVD. As one disc burns, another in the drive below got its lightscribe label. At any one time I had 7+ applications going, most with multiple windows. When you want to throw in a music playlist and some web browsing into that, it gets VERY cluttered - even on 5 monitors.
-shamless plug for the obligitory pron that would always be playing in the background on at least one screen
krijpipudht 09-15-2009, 06:46 AM Adobe Lightroom is great with 2 screens.
