GB: From virtual to real, recently you have won an important competition on the Nurburgring, is it a great memory?

Kazunori Yamauchi: You know it takes around 10 minutes to make a full lap on the Nurburgring circuit. Honestly, after 7 laps and more than 1 hour racing, corner after corner, I was starting to brake and change gears completely by instinct. I felt I was not thinking anymore, so much that I had the feeling I was dreaming. I almost forgot I was actually driving. Frankly, I felt like in a trance state, something I never experienced with a video game. You know this race will remain a strong experience for me, this unique sensation that you and the car are one.

GB: Gran Turismo 5 will not be released in Japan before March 2010. What about Europe?

KZ: Trust me, it should be very close from this date because our schedules didn’t changed. What I can assure you is both versions will be finished at the same time.

GB: Gran Turismo 5 will offer a new kind of damage…

KY: Right now we are adding a brand new real-time deformation engine that will process according to the speed and angle of impact. But doing this in real-time remains truly complex. We could make it an easier way with pre-damaged models but definitely we don’t want to make it that way.

GB: Players have changed since the original Gran Turismo. How does GT adapt to this?

KY: You would notice that in Gran Turismo for PSP, game progression was accelerated. Before this, it took hours and hours to collect all cars and complete all license tests, this is not true anymore. This is a trend we are considering the possibility for GT5.

GB: You seem to be more concerned about your competitors…

KY: To tell you the truth, when I’m interested in other games, it’s really difficult to not look at them with the creator’s eyes. I notice some details and I think to myself: “oh, they must have really hard worked on this point” or “hmm, they must have lacked time for this very aspect”. I can’t prevent myself from putting me in their place.

GB: More than 10 years after Gran Turismo’s debut, what will you record from Polyphony Digital’s evolution?

KY: I will probably surprise you but, since more than 10 years I design Gran Turismos we never told ourselves that we were the best, the numbers one. As far as I search in my memories, I can’t remember a moment when we felt satisfied with what we’ve achieved because we always want to make it better. That being said, maybe that when everything will be over, the day I will not make video games anymore, I will feel this satisfaction… but this is not in the near future.

GB: During the Gamescom, you told us about the possibility of making a RPG. Would it be a Kazunori-style Shenmue?

KY: (laugh) Indeed it could resemble Shenmue, just because it resemble my own tastes. But if I really had to make another game, I would like it to include how characters live and die. To introduce a true life cycle and evolution.

Awesome. This is one of the marks of the truly excellent. If you are busy looking back at competitors, thinking nothing is ahead of you, well, you lose the road.

Don't drive through your mirrors, drive through your windshield this is my favorite comment. it trutly shows, that PD doesnt like to take the easy way out. which reminds me, last night i was fooling around with F3 Demo, i made my self hit dead on with a wall. my paint on my car from my door to front was all gone, and that was just from a dead on hit. i never knew that paint just flys off the car if you hit something dead on lol

Yeah, that is the right way to do it. If the physics engine takes suspension components, aerodynamics, breathing, cooling, etc... into account, then it would certainly make certain angles far less serious. Like a tire into the door vs into your front splitter/radiator/tie rods, etc...

Eventually, sim games will progress far enough that there isn't a vehicle dynamics model, but a aero/hydro dynamics model, which models the airflow, the combustion, the force of combustion, and then the mechanical dynamics moving the pistons/rotors, pushing the drivetrain, down to the friction model for the tire against the surface it is on.

Once it hits that point....incredible.

Edit:
Once it hits that point, I forsee a fairly significant leap forward in vehicle performance dynamics. I know they have specific lab software that lets them model components of this, but when you add 50,000,000 couch 'engineers' able to mess with stuff in a setting that is essentially the real world, including how it actually holds up and performs, I think there will be quite a few incredible finds.

It's likely something of an exponential curve though, where the amount of work to pick up the last 5% of detail is going to be tremendous. I actually wouldn't be surprised if there's going to be an "uncanny valley", a point you reach right before the game feels like reality where it feels impossibly fake.

Alfy: Yah, the damage modeling in F3 hasn't really progressed since F2, kind of a bummer. Hopefully GT5 can get it right and still stay performant. Physics calculations in general are an embarrasingly parallel problem though so the Cell in the PS3 actually has a huge advantage there (AI too, for that matter) so if they're willing to put in the work to achieve it, they should be able to do something incredible... I'm just worried it's going to take too long, or it's going to turn into what happened when Microsoft tried to re-define their file system when working on Vista.

Speaking as a programmer, working on a platform like the PS3 is completely and utterly different from every other environment. Sony has presented you with this new paradigm, it's more dramatic than asking someone who has spent their life designing piston engines to design a rotary. They'll know all the principles involved and many of the basic concepts remain the same but the engine itself is fundamentally different.

alfy28

oh dont worry, the game it self is finished. as he told japanese publication , the game is done. its only 60% on damage done. but glad they pushed it back. so no worries man, GT5 will release on time.

btw what is up with Forza 3 AI? ive seen alot of reviews that state the AI is either way to easy, or if you put the AI on hard, its super hard. that is one area, taht racing games never can get right.

Anijo
10-09-2009, 04:56 PM
It's a really tough balance to reach without turning the AI into rail racers. Any time you try and add any... character... to the AI, it becomes a pretty impossible problem. Remember, computers work in "binary", you tell it to find the fastest way around a corner or not, it's hard to ask it for the "best way around a corner that doesn't get too far ahead of the player and doesn't get in the way of their braking line and doesn't leave your exit speed so low the player blows you away on the straight and doesn't over heat your tires so you go slower the next corner and doesn't run you into the other cars and..."

"The game itself is finished", well, not really, right? It's just the damage modeling". Sure, the content is done, the damage modeling won't impact the track modeling but think about all the things that a proper damage model impacts:
The AI - The AI now have to have a better self preservation policy
The AI - The AI now needs to be able to account for the damage to their car when driving
The Graphics - All damage to a car has to look reasonable
The Graphics - Damaging a car is going to wildly change its polygon count, now you need to account for this when balancing for performance
The Graphics - Games in general rely heavily on bump mapping for high-detail areas such as the front mount intercoolers on some cars. Now damage can deform these surfaces which means you can't bump map them anymore without things not looking right.
The Graphics - If you watch the smoke dispersion patterns from tire smoke, they're pretty simplistic and it doesn't detract from the game very much when you see smoke occlusion go wrong and send a puff through a car. Now you're going to be dealing with a lot more smoke, chances are people will notice more when it's clipping through random parts of the car.
The Physics - Think about the implications of trying to recalculate drag coefficients on the fly. When the car models are relatively static, they can figure these out with super computing clusters once but now you need to do it to 16 cars as they're being dynamically damaged
The Physics - Are they going to handle wheel damage? What about flat tires?
The Physics - PD have OCD in the best way possible, so they're going to want front end damage to overheat your engine if the radiator is there, but some cars have the radiator(s) in other places, so now you're tracking those locations as they get damaged.

The list for Physics considerations goes on and on. "Just the Damage Modeling" is honestly a monumental task. Remember for every change they make, they now need to test all of their car models (figure what, 200-300 unique cars?) and damage each of them in every way possible to make sure what they expect to happen still does.

The cool thing about PD though is that deep down, they WANT to get all of this right.

The down side is... this is classic Feature Creep. The better they want to make it, the harder it will be, the less likely they are to still be able to ship on time.

It is something we can't touch. If the car is made well, it will drive well.

...and if it is made like crap, it will drive like crap. Does that mean that the Chevy Cobalt's interior will appropriately fall apart on the interior camera shots after a few thousand miles of driving? :) Will we need to swap out the 8's engine between 20-40k miles if we aren't given the option of premixing? :)

j/k. Love the comment though.

Did you guys notice what was said at the end of the video? That the SLS is going to be released in spring of 2010, do you think that may have delayed the release of GT5 from coming out this holiday season?

Especialy if the SLS may be on the front of the box? It makes sense to me to release the game when the SLS comes out to generate more sales. You never know, Mercedes may throw a copy of GT5 with every purchase of a SLS.:)

which makes wonder SLS is exclusive to GT5 only. Which would be a deal between mercedes and PD to release it at the same time.

The thought occurred to me as well. If that interview video is months old, then they could have come up with that deal, ahead of time, and then announced the pushed back release date in March. Probably not much complaint on PD's side, if they wanted to redo the damage engine better anyway.

Although, I have to say, I can't see many people cross-shopping GT5 and the SLS :) I mean, not many people with that much cash on hand will be sitting at home playing video games. Celebrities or professional drivers are probably the only ones. The billionaires, daughters of millionaires, etc... probably wouldn't even realize the game exists, or care.

Yeah its sad that the likes of those who buy the SLS will never use it to its full potential. The car will be used to build there ego or level of status bar.
Its going to be featured in a rap video or two and will be the next high profile "it" car to have , you will see Paris hilton drivinga pink one just made for her(oh brother), or some guy with too much money than brains buy it and have it sealed in a large glass container and call it car art.

I am sorry this car is meant to be driven , and driven hard and enjoyed by us enthusiast of the world. Long live GT and the ones who bleeds passion for cars!
Its definitely going to be one of the cars i will be driving in GT, I hope they have a Le mans version of the car or a special GT racing version of the SLS , that would make my day! :worship:

Top Gear's greatest driving road in the world looks like it will be making an appearance in Gran Turismo 5.

So not only will Top Gear's test track be included in Polyphony Digital's eventual Gran Turismo 5 release, the show's greatest driving road in the world, the Stelvio Pass, may also be making an appearance.

Top Gear's Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond went on a search for their fantasy driving road at the beginning of the 10th series, arriving at the glorious Stelvio Pass.

This road, located in Italy, is the highest mountain pass in the Eastern Alps at almost 2800 meters.

So what makes us think that the Stelvio Pass will be featured as one of Gran Turismo 5's seventy tracks? In Polyphony Digital's latest promotional video for Toyota's FT-86 Concept, you should be able to spot the similarities between the real-life Stelvio Pass and what is shown in this GT5 video. For example, NeoGaf user SolidSnakex has created the following image comparison:

this rumor never seems to die. I remember reading this like 2months ago in a japanese magazine. but seems like, someone at PD and sony let this info slip again.

Looks like, the rumors are becoming true. Its seems, you will be able to make your own tracks.

http://www.gtplanet.net/gran-turismo-5-track-editor-rumors-resurface/

Since our own insider Amar212 first hinted that a track editor would be included in Gran Turismo 5, it’s something that many people, including myself, have approached with too-good-to-be-true trepidation. As we’ve learned more about the game, both Yamauchi and Polyphony Digital’s quickly-pulled web site posting have neglected to mention anything about what would be an incredible new feature. As a result, it’s dropped off the radar for most fans.

That’s all started to change over the weekend, however, as the Tokyo Game Show demo of Gran Turismo 5 was shown at DigiExpo in Finland. In a video interview with Finnish website Iltalehti, Sony Marketing Manager Suman Rath casually mentioned that “you can make your own tracks” (around 2:25). First picked up by GTPlanet user Timppaq yesterday, further discussion and analysis from other Finnish members have been able to confirm the true meaning of his words. Read their posts here, and please share your own impressions if you speak the language!

As with most off-hand, translated interview comments, we may not be getting completely accurate information, but it is still quite promising. Proceed with caution!

As part of the annual SEMA Convention in Las Vegas, the Gran Turismo Awards recognize the best vehicles shown at SEMA in five different categories. The culmination of the awards is the Best in Show vehicle, which is personally selected from the category winners by none other than Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi and announced at the highly anticipated Gran Turismo Awards ceremony. The winning Best in Show vehicle will join a prestigious group of previous winners that have been enshrined in digital form in the world’s best driving simulator as a playable vehicle in a future Gran Turismo release. This year the Gran Turismo Awards will be held on November 4 at the Rain Nightclub at the trendy Palms hotel, with doors opening at 9PM.

Leading into SEMA and the GT Awards, exhibitors are invited to submit their car for consideration by a panel of five judges, each handling a category including Best Hot Rod, Best Asian Import, Best European Import, Best Domestic Automobile, and Best Truck/SUV. The judges all represent leading automotive media, and each one will judge vehicles based on those entrants that exhibit the strongest balance of performance and style, worthy of the GT franchise.

When the five category winners are selected, it then falls to Kazunori Yamauchi to select the overall GT Awards “Best in Show.” Walking the show floor, Kazunori-san views all category winners and selects the vehicle that best represents the Gran Turismo brand, and one that will be immortalized as a fully playable part of the Gran Turismo franchise for millions of fans around the world. The culmination of the event is the GT Awards ceremony where each category winner is announced and the overall winner is presented with the trophy for Best in Show and the honor of having their vehicle included in a future release of Gran Turismo. Following the awards ceremony is a celebration for all attendees, including participation from top music acts and a chance to check out the latest gameplay in the Gran Turismo franchise.

Check here for a recap of the 2008 Gran Turismo Awards, and here for a video recap of the event. Go here for a video of the 2007 Gran Turismo Awards. Both of the winners from these two events, the 2007 HPA Motorsports FT565 twin turbo Audi TT from the 2007 awards, and the 2007 Infiniti high end performance G37 from the 2008 awards, will be playable in Gran Turismo 5.

I have a couple of questions....

1. Will GT5 include a CarWash Place like GT3? :)

2. Will GT5 have a used car place like GT2 had? (i would like to own older type of vehicles)

3. Will GT5 have a trade feature you can trade vehicles with other online players or
Have a feature where other online players can view your garage/vehicles?

4. Will you be able to use a MICROPHONE while in gameplay? It would be nice..... Especially in NASCAR so other ppl can know when to block for you? :yesnod:

5. Wheel shop will be available Im guessing? And will it be like GT3 where you keep the wheel you bought... and you can swap back and forth>?

6. Being able to make your own track would be nice! (i know its a rumor 4 now)

7. Will there be a quarter mile track like in GT4? (i think it was 1/4 mile.. )

8. I had another question but i forgot.....

When will you release GT5?

Yamauchi: We will release it in March in Japan but for other regions, it has not been decided yet.

What's holding it up?

That's more depending on SCEA (Sony Computer Entertainment America) marketing decisions.

Have you spoken with those guys?

My job is to create the product, not sell it.

What's taking so long with the product, then?

From our perspective, it doesn't seem like that long a time. To make Gran Turismo 5, we threw away the legacy code from GT4 and started from scratch. It's been five years from [the release of] GT4, and that's the same amount of time it took to develop the first GT4. To create a game from scratch, that's the amount of time it takes to get it right.

You're at the SEMA show, what do you think?

Every time I come to SEMA, I can feel the passion of the car owners who bring their cars here. The SEMA show is different from what you see at a typical motor show. There is more passion here.

Will any SEMA cars ever be in GT5?

It is possible.

How many cars will be on GT5?

I have never actually counted all the cars. I don't have a policy to count them all. We are aiming for 1,000 cars in GT5.

Will those be on the disc when you buy the game or will we have to download them from other sources?

They will all be on the disc.

How do you chose which cars get in the game?

There will be three types: cars we want, the cars the users would like to see in the game and then cars the manufacturers want in it.

Have any manufacturers paid to put their cars in the game?

There have been cases where they've shown that interest [in paying to play], but I don't think we've ever shown interest in [accepting money to include certain cars].

Wouldn't that be a profitable venture for you?

A lot of times it develops into a relationship where we collaborate to raise the level of the game.

How many racetracks do you have in GT5?

There are 20 different environments and around 70 different track layouts.

Which tracks?

We haven't made any announcements. The demo [playing next to us in the interview room] is of Route 246, which runs through the middle of Tokyo.

That must be ripe for wrecking cars. Does GT5 include damage to the cars?

Yes, and the demo has it.

Is it difficult to include that feature?

It is not very hard, though it was not in previous Gran Turismos.

Is GT5 more for the advanced player or can beginners play too?

We do have a setting for people who are just learning how to drive. The other setting is very strict, where even an F1 driver can learn new tricks from the system. However, a lot of driver's aids will be included, such as driving lines, ABS, automatic braking, you can reverse your game and record your laps and share them with others. All those things. They were not that difficult to implement.

What other features will GT5 have?

There will be 400,000 polygons per car, 100 times more than were present on GT4. GT4 had 4,000 polygons per car. You can customize and tune the cars, too.

You have NASCAR and WRC in the game. Does this include the complete list of all tracks in those series?

The NASCAR series is so large it would be impossible to put everything in the game. We will have select courses and select cars in the game. You will also be able to race the stock cars on a number of tracks not found on the NASCAR calendar. In speaking with NASCAR, they said they'd like to see their cars able to race on other tracks, and you can do that [in GT5].

Will you have F1, ALMS or FIA GT?

We had a Ferrari F1 car in the game. For FIA GT and ALMS, we won't have that in the series yet. But we will have a lot of cars that race at Le Mans, so in that sense, there will be cars from ALMS.

Have you played Forza Motorsport 3?

I was watching the guys at our company trying it out in the office. I tried it a little bit. It's very similar in a lot of aspects to Gran Turismo. Some base components of the game are very different from Gran Turismo. It's a little bit different from what a simulator is. You can feel it when you drive it.

Will there be a Gran Turismo 6?

Yes. You won't have to wait as long as you did for GT5. GT5 represents a whole new operating system. GT6 is just new apps that run on the GT5 system.

Will there be downloadable content for GT5?

Eventually there will probably be but there are no actual plans set yet.

What did GT5 cost to make?

[He and translator do some figuring, converting yen to dollars] $60 million. There are other games that cost more. Considering the size and scale of the game, I think it's probably a fairly small amount.

Where do you see the future of gaming? Is it taking over movies, music and video as a form of entertainment?

I think that's already happened. It does take up a part of somebody's time in life. What's taking the most amount of time in people's lives is communication, like Facebook and things like this. I think that might take away from the time people spend on entertainment, whether it's movies or video games. A lot of basic instincts of human beings is starting to come out now [on sites such as Facebook]. Maybe human beings are just satisfied by continually communicating, not face to face but just communicating. The content they communicate doesn't seem to matter very much; it can be pretty much anything, even meaningless at times. There's a good possibility that even video games might be faded away.

But not right away?

Obviously not right away, but things change over time in every generation

Very nice looking . i like how Kazu likes picking out cars that have soul. like 2 years ago , he picked the 1960's Art Morrison Vette. Now dont get me wrong, i like all the modern day tuned cars. but when i look at them, they seem soulless.

http://uatrl.com/gt5/60vette_gt5.jpg

maybe its because i see them alot, but when i look at these old cars i tend to think what the designer was thinking about when he made this car.

Glad this mustang won, looks very clean, and this is coming from some one who really never cared for the 60-70 stang, since i prefer camaro and plymouth cuda over the stang.

November 5, 2009 - When Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi hits the floor of the Special Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show to look at cars, he's accompanied by a phalanx of helpers, handlers, assistants, PR flaks and even a personal photographer to document the annual pilgrimage.

The group cuts a lumpy swath through the crowd as the notorious car nut (universally referred to as just Kazunori) makes his way from one outrageous vehicle to the next. He's here to pick the winning custom automobile for the annual SEMA Gran Turismo Awards, and he doesn't waste any time getting down to business.

The GT Award winner gets a custom gold PS3 slim.As the Japanese developer strides across the show floor, moving from one entry to the next, the entourage struggles to keep up. Although he zips around the floor quickly, his demeanor immediately shifts when he engages with the car creators. Speaking through a translator, Kazunori slows down and methodically grills the designers of the nominated cars, questioning them about engine specifications, body modifications, paint jobs and each project's back story.

The nominees are broken into five categories: Truck/SUV, Asian Import, European Import, Domestic and Hot Rod. In addition to winners in those categories, an overall award is given to the best of the pack. That car will be then digitized in typically obsessive Polyphony fashion and immortalized in the upcoming Gran Turismo 5. The overall winner also receives a one-of-a-kind gold PlayStation 3 Slim (the category winners get PSPgos) and the best bragging rights in the business.

Winners from recent shows include an HPA Audi TT and an Infinity G37, both of which are already built into GT5 in playable form. Kazunori's choice in Vegas this year would add a third custom SEMA car to the GT5 roster, and he takes the decision seriously.

"We're basically looking for the most high performance cars out there," Kazunori says. "We find the car that shines out from the crowd like a jewel."

His first stop is at a lime-green trophy truck. It's a hulking beast that makes the sleek tuner cars at the show look like flimsy toys. After sitting in the truck and talking with its builders, he moves on to the World Racing Unlimited Scion tC, which is already drawing a crowd before his entourage arrives. Built for time attack racing, this 2009 2.4L FWD Scion coupe stands out not only for its stellar race record but also for its dramatic front-mounted wing, which can produce upwards of 1,000 pounds of downforce at racing speed. It's a remarkable looking setup that's tough to wrap your mind around at first sight. It's a truly unique car that would make a fascinating drive in GT5.
http://ps3media.ign.com/ps3/image/article/104/1042809/gran-turismo-5-20091105042858548.jpg

After the Scion, it's on to the hot rod, a 1970 Mustang "Trans Cammer" built by Philip Koenen and Grand Touring Garage in Oregon. Powered by a Ford 427 SOHC engine, it's a beautiful beast, a truly evil looking car painted in high-gloss black. The simplicity of its design coupled with the light-eating paint job gives the Mustang a menacing, no-frills look that says, "You have no idea what I'm capable of."

Kazunori talks with Koenen at length before moving on to a piece of modern muscle, a Camaro SS dubbed "The Moment" by Nic Ashby and Ldrship Designs. Tricked out with racing seats, Brembo brakes and a Paxton supercharged LS3 engine, it's a modder's masterpiece with more carbon fiber than a NASA warehouse.

Last on the list is the European category entry, a 2009 Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 whose gorgeous rear end has been brutally disfigured by the sadistic minds at Underground Racing. Tacked on to the Lambo's stock 5.2-liter V10 engine engine is a twin turbo setup that makes the car look like some skunk works prototype deemed too ugly and powerful for the general population to drive.

http://ps3media.ign.com/ps3/image/article/104/1042809/gran-turismo-5-20091105042859095.jpg
Modified 2009 Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4.
After the judging is complete and the show ends for the day, SEMA attendees reconvene at the Palms Hotel for Sony's GT Awards party at Rain nightclub, where Kazunori presents the category awards and declares an overall winner: Koenen's 1970 Mustang.

It's not only a great car, Kazunori says, but one with a remarkable story. Built for one of Koenen's wealthy clients in Hong Kong, the car started out with a search for the car's rare engine, which Koenen winded up finding in the back of a garage in California. After more than 3 hours of negotiations with the pristine engine's owner, Koenen had the 427 "Cammer", eventually to be paired with the 1970 Mustang body, which he found in dry, classic-car-friendly Arizona. Then he and his team went to painstaking work putting the finished package together.

The effort was well worth the trouble, as the 'Stang will now be available for anyone to drive in Gran Turismo 5 when the game releases this spring. Although there's still no official release window for GT5 in the west, the game is set for a March release in Japan, and Sony says to expect a similar time frame for North America. When that day comes, rest assured that it'll come packed with some serious custom American muscle.

latest interview. i think its going to be released April. reason is, GOd of war 3 comes out march, i dont think sony wants 2 of their games competing against each other. which is good, because i cant wait till GOW 3 comes out :).

Video interview are missing lots of questions, so make sure to read the text below. ENjoy :) http://ps3.ign.com/dor/objects/857126/gran-turismo-5/videos/granturismo5_inv_cema.html

What do you look for in a SEMA winner?

In the SEMA GT awards, we have Japanese cars, European cars, domestic cars, and we're basically just looking for the most high performance cars out there. But I haven't seen them yet so I don't know exactly whats's going to happen. We find the car that shines out from the crowd like a jewel.

Last year's SEMA was all about classic cars. What are the trends you are seeing this year?

Yes, the theme last year was nostalgia. There is a revivlal of a lot of American cars. This year one thing I noticed was there are a lot less European cars and I saw a lot of R35 GT-Rs that were tuned on the floor.

What were the winning cars from the past 2 years, and why were they chosen?

First the HPA Audi (TT), I was very impressed by the performance of the car, obviously. And also the level of completion of all the details of the car – the interior, exterior and nearly everything about it was just nearly perfect. And that was something I focused on.

For the (Infinity) G37, I was kind of overwhelmed by the wild exterior of the car and I think the other thing that really got me about that car was there were a lot of ppl who worked on that car. It was just the sort of car that everybody got together and poured their passion into. And that was something that I really liked about it.

Are you ready to announce a North American release date for Gran Turismo 5?

In Japan it's due to be released in March 2010. And the release date in North America shouldn't deviate too far from that, but it hasn't been decided yet.

You've said before there will be 20 locations with 70 variations. Can you break that down at all in more detail for people who are accustomed to hearing a specific number of tracks?

At SEMA we still can't talk about the details yet. As I mentioned before there will be 20 different types of scenery the game will be set in, and in those 20 different locations there will be 70 different layouts of tracks that will be available to play.

Have you finalized plans for a track editor?

Things like that I can't really discuss yet. This can be said about all the GT development. Until we're very close to release we won't have a finalized decision on a lot of things.

If there is a track editor, that will make your job easier, right? Because you can make fans design the tracks instead of your team.

Laughs] A lot of the courses we set up, we take a long time fine-tuning the details and building the track, so it would probably be a bit different than the types of tracks the users will set up in the game.

Has it been decided if weather or time changes will be in the final game?

Technically it's already possible to do in the game, it's just how we're going to have that have meaning in the game.

Recently we saw a video of the Gran Turismo box with multiple discs. What exactly is on those discs?

Laughs] That's something else we can't really talk about yet, but I'm surprised at the level of detail everyone is focused on.

The videos you've made to coincide with the announcment of the inclusion of cars like the Ferrari 458 Italia and the Toyota FT-86 were great. Are there plans to release more of them?

Of course. And we have a lot of collaborations going on with a lot of different manufacturers right now, so I think not just in terms of video, but we'll have other things to announce as time progresses.

Have plans been finalized for whether motorcycles will be featured in Gran Turismo 5?

If that's what users really want in the game, I think that's a possibility. Or we could consider making a Tourist Trophy 2 as well.

Are you working with Logitech on a new racing wheel for GT5?

When the Driving Force GT came out, that was actually developed for GT5. And it was kind of an early release for it to be sold while GT5 Prologue was out. And we've yet to actually maximise the performance of that steering wheel. I think we're going to try to draw out all the potential it has before we move on to developing a new wheel. Because I think that steering wheel still has a lot of possibilities.

For the Top Gear tracks, will you be able to race agains The Stig's official times?

We're trying to plan that now.
you could drive any car in the world you haven't driven yet, what would it be?

I'd like to try driving the Tesla Roadster S actually.

Will that car be in the game?

It will appear in the game, and I'm really itching to get the chance to drive that car.

Interesting and dayyyyuumm I cant wait...

One question I do have is if the Licenses we have aquired in GT5p will be carried over like GT3 to GT4 was? Or how about a certain amount of money? Or will anything be able to transfer over from GT5p to the REAL GT5? IM sure that people who spent $$ on GT5p even though it was not a full game would appreciate some sort of .....PERK... Announced just hours ago on the PlayStation EU Blog, GT Academy 2010 will be held in a brand new demo of Gran Turismo 5 hitting the PlayStation Store on December 17, 2009. The demo will feature a stock and tuned version of the Nissan 370Z, and, while Sony has decided not to release the track just yet, I have been aware of the competition for some time now and GTPlanet reveal the demo will include either Spa Francorchamps or the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. However, Sony described the track as a “specially created section of a new Gran Turismo 5 circuit”, which suggests to me it’s the Indianapolis GP Circuit, as it is quite literally a “section” of a larger circuit. (Let’s not forget it was also the big track prominently shown in Gran Turismo 5’s E3 2009 trailer.)

The GT Academy competition will work much like it did last time, only it’s expanded to include all of the countries listed after the jump – though if you’re from the United States like myself, don’t bother looking. Although it’s more than a little disheartening to be left out of the competition for a second time, Sony’s blog post assures us that countries not included in GT Academy will still get to try out the demo. Bring on the 17th!

More on Gran Turismo 5’s Head Tracking

Other than my article on Gran Turismo 5’s mysterious head-tracking feature, it hasn’t managed to get much press (though, admittedly, it’s only been mentioned once). However, it’s back in the spotlight once again after a Kotaku editor tried a GT5 demo with a Sony representative. Although the demo did not include head-tracking itself, the Sony rep tried to describe how its implemented as best he could:

The other stand-out feature I was told about was head-tracking. The game will support the PlayStation 3 camera, the PlayStation Eye. While one wasn’t hooked up at today’s event, it was explained that the device will track a player’s head movements. The goal is for the depth-of-field focal point far down the track to shift, matching your head movement. What you look at will be appear more clearly, in theory. So as you look a little to the right, the right part of what you see beyond your car may come more sharply into focus. But the car itself won’t turn with your head, of course.

The Sony rep explained that Polyphony’s goal is for players to feel like they are experiencing what real racers see. He noted that the feature was still a work in progress and couldn’t offer more details about how it works. From his gestures, I suspect the head-tracking will be responsive more to leans than to head turns, the latter of which obviously would make it hard to see the TV.

In other words, it would seem to suggest that GT5’s camera movement will be more subtle and intuitive rather than exaggerated and abrupt, which is a very good thing.

That was a good idea to give us a 370Z for the demo release, the 370Z is a nice balance of accel, speed, and handeling. I pray they give us SPA to run that car on, that track is bad ass! Even the nuringburg would be a nice track, 13 miles of hills, spills and turns upon turns! Woohoo!

That, combined with the restrictions that auto manufacturers place on what sort of damage can be shown in their vehicles (smoke and fire is a big no-no) means you won't see any huge wrecks

Interesting comment here. Speaks volumes to the legal contracts in play in getting permission to model them in the game. Also explains why these factors have basically never been visible in any game with real cars.

THe only way I would import my copy in March is if you can change the text language to english in the menues.

I hope Kaz sticks to a summer release, this is painful. I could see Sony pursuading him to release it in America as a fall or Christmas release to boast sales of the PS3 console.Next fall and holiday games are Resistance 3 , Killzone 3 a new NFS and a few others i can't recall as of late.Let them have there glory, it only makes since for Sony to release GT5 in late spring or early summer where there is a gap of new releases. I don't understand why Sony can't release GT5 in March for everybody?

yah, its a contract that has been haunting PD ever since they started to make GT series. which is why, all the tuned version of the cars and race cars will have damage. but the company version of the car will not have.

so like amuse s2k, amemiya etc will have damage.

Say it ain't so. Maybe I can import from Japan in March and learn Japanese by then, lol (I remember fumbling around in the original demo of GT5 several years ago that was a Japanese only release and it wasn't easy). I don't mind waiting longer for game to be released for PD to add more content or improve things but if it's ready to launch in Japan why not in other markets? I'm sure it is Sony NA and some sort of marketing strategy and probably has nothing to do w/ PD. Torture. At least Forza and it's guaranteed frequent updates eases the pain a little. Like Alfy said, plenty of time to get a wheel and build chair/setup. In the mean time, w/ details trickling out here and there thru interviews and what-not over the last few months, the game is looking really good and should live up to the hype.

PD said they can release it in march for the US. but its sony who doesnt want to release it in march. and my only guess is, God of war 3 comes out. So Sony doesnt want both games to compete against each other, since they are Sony 1st party games.

I am not trying to defend sony, but i can see why they are doing that. they want both games to sell, but if both games come out at the same time, a customer might only pick up one of the 2. Were they have a better chance for the customer picking up the 2nd game on a different month.

Honestly... it already has :( At this point, the only people who are going to recognize the brand when it comes out are going to be the hardcore fans. That's fine, world wide they'll account for 1million-2million sales, which is a match or better for what Forza sold which is going to win the forum wars and that's all well and good... the thing is that's not nearly enough to justify the development time and costs.

Realistically, if this game doesn't sell 5million+ copies, we're not going to see a GT6. If we don't see a GT6... console racing sim games are going to stagnate and we'll be left with no real Sims on consoles. A new franchise will have to fight its way into the space and GT's shoes are hard to fill (just ask Microsoft )

9 monthse Aftwr Jpn version to come out. Its not like an rpg game, that they have all this txt to change to English for the US version of Gt . zumn rest assured, the game will be out before this summer for the US. That was awesome, great find ALFY!
I noticed too how crip and vibrant the graphics look. According to the still shots the car paint looks real! Look at that reflection in that 370 Z's paint! WOW!

The road looks definitely better too, the tire squeal sounds better too.

I thought the graphic quality in GT5P was good and couldn't get better, when Kaz said GT5P graphics were a teaser and the graphics quality was going to go up for the actual game....he wasn't kidding.

And this isn't the actual game, its a refined GT5P demo.

I seriously doubt it. Isn't that even before Japan release?

Stores will ALWAYS give a false release date so they can be the ones to snag the pre-order. Never believe a store, always believe the company selling the game. If they haven't given a release date, there isn't a way the stores will know.

I've learned this from StarCraft 2 and Duke Nukem: Forever :lol2:

Amazon posts up dates that are communicated to them by the publishers on when the publisher will make it available for pickup and do not post up the date if it's not given. Amazon doesn't guess or infer. Ask me how I know.;)

TOKYO, Jan 13 (Reuters) - Sony Corp (6758.T) said it will postpone the launch of the latest version of its blockbuster racing game series "Gran Turismo", citing production-related matters, in a potential blow to its videogame operations.

"Gran Turismo 5", designed for Sony's PlayStation 3 (PS3) game console, was due to be launched in March, the final month of the current financial year. A new launch date has not been set.

My guess is PS4

JRichter
01-14-2010, 03:06 PM
You won't see a PS4 from Sony until sales of GT5, whenever it releases, completely dries up.

Analysts suspect that there may be a strategy behind the delay and that Sony is working to spread the effect of a strong games pipeline over a longer period. The recent Japanese launch of Final Fantasy XIII shifted many more PS3 consoles than expected and performed beyond expectations outside Japan.

If Sony felt that it had already met its console sales targets for its 2009 financial year, analysts said, it might want to push the GT5 launch back a little so that the frenzy surrounding its eventual launch would boost sales in the 2010 financial year. The company may be confident that titles such as God of War 3, Dark Rain and Bayonetta will keep console sales relatively buoyant through the spring period.

This sounds true. Money controls everything.

USA had an interview with him, read his comments. This came outthe 9th.Or you can go directly towards the source.
http://content.usatoday.com/communities/gamehunters/post/2010/01/talking-gran-turismo-5/1

Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi test drives Gran Turismo 5 at the Consumer Electronics Show Jan. 9, 2010.
CAPTIONBy Mike SniderKazunori Yamauchi is admiring his handiwork. He has just finished maneuvered a Ferrari 458 Italia sports car through the streets of a virtual Tokyo in a trade show build of the still in-development Gran Turismo 5.

"On this track the hardest thing was just making the scenery of Tokyo," he says, standing beside the sports car cockpit/HDTV arcade setup where he took the Ferrari for a spin during last week's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. He's watching the replay of his trial. "It took about a year to complete one track."

The plan is to have about 70 tracks and close to 1,000 cars. Work continues on the game at Polyphony Digital after Sony on Wednesday announced that it would be postponed. The U.S. launch had been planned for sometime after the March release in Japan. For now, the game has an undetermined launch date. (You can test drive the game currently in a demo available on the PlayStation Network.)

During an interview at CES with Yamauchi he talked about his plans for the game. "Games have kind of branched out into very detailed genres since 15 years ago when I first started developing games. And because they have branched out into these categories they have started to lose their individuality. It's hard to differentiate between one game and another. I want Gran Turismo 5 to be something really special so we are doing something to really revolutionize car games and racing games in Gran Turismo 5.

More from the interview with Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi:

What stage is the game at?
About 90% of the game is done. We are just working on the last 10% and polishing up everything.

A screen shot from the upcoming video game 'Gran Turismo 5'.
CAPTIONBy Sony Computer Entertainment

Talk a bit about what players will experience when they get to play the game.
I created the first Gran Tursimo back in 1997 (for the original PlayStation). Back then, it kind of set a new standard for the style for car racing games. This Gran Turismo 5 is going to change all that now. It will change the style of car games in the future. It will be creating a new standard for the genre.

In what manner?
The entire game design and you might be able to say the functionality of the game. I think it would be expressed better if you just say the entire game design.

How are you doing this and is this to allow players to go deeper into the car driving experience?
I think the background behind it is the advancements in technology. But the driving force and necessity for that change is really the times we live in and that the lifestyles of the people playing games have changed over the years.

What is it about cars and racing that led you to create the Gran Turismo games?
Out of all the industrial products out there, cars are very special. One, because you control the car and it allows you to travel at amazing speeds, basically enhancing what you do. And as an object, a car is beautiful in design.
The other thing is that cars are something that let you cross the bounds of society. For example, I drove from Los Angeles to Las Vegas for this trip and as long as you are driving under 65 miles an hour you are within the bounds of society. Once you go a little bit over you are kind of crossing those bounds and I can't think of anything else in the world that lets you do something like that.

For example, like knives or guns, if you make the wrong decisions they will take you out of the bounds. But it's not like cars where before you realize it, wait, I am out of the bounds.

For all those types of meanings, cars are special, I think. Because cars have that attraction is what drove me to make a video game out of them.

How old were you when you know you had an interest in cars?
Three.

What happened?
My father used to load his wares onto his car and take me around while he drove around for business. Just driving around, I learned the shapes and names of all the cars that were on the road back then. It was something that I enjoyed. I think when I was three, I could probably name every car on the road. That's around when it started.

Here at CES there is a lot of talk about 3D games and motion control for video games. What are your thoughts on those technologies?
For 3D, I think our level of expression in that technology is not really complete yet. We still have a lot of work in development that has to poured into that field.

As for motion control it is a brand new user interface. It really has infinite possibilities, of course, for the game industry and other industries. There is still a lot more development that needs to go into it but it's a major possibility right now.

Are you looking at using motion control in Gran Turismo 5?
It might be used to maybe control the user interface like you would a mouse, but that the extent we would use it for.

In this months subscription of GAME INFORMER there is an interview with Sony's Senior Vice President of Product Development Shuhei Yoshida.

The question asked was " You are very supportive of Polyphony Digital and have given them what seems like almost unlimited time to make Gran Turismo 5. Obviously, they want to make the best game they can, but from a management perspective does it rach the point where you say enough is enough?"

He answered : " [Laughs] Well, with developers like Yamauchisan, it may look from the outside that they dont care if they spends as much time as tjhey want, but they really do work hard to get the game done. They wish that they could release these games more frequently. Butg because of the pressure they put on themselves, they have been doing the best that they can. (continued on next post)

Its ture that its been five years since the last true game - Gran Turismo 4- was released; when you look at it like that the team seems to be taking forever. But Gran Turismo is one of the faces of the PLAYSTATION brand, so they always get requests from the platform side to make technical demonstrations. Kazunorie would remind you that, from Polyphony's standpoint, they have released something almost every year, but they are also in the situation thaty they have additional lresponsibilities to the platform. So I'm half-agreeing with your statement, but also trying to explaint the situation around Gran Turismo." /Interview.

Yeah it sucks GT5 won't be released till the fall, but on the other hand it gives us time to finish playing some awesome games that are coming out between now and summer time.

I still have to finish FF13, play GOW3 , Metroid 3, Metroid :other M, finish NFS Shift, play FF8,play Super Street Fighter 4 and any other new title that come out like Last Guardian or Lost Planet 2.Ahhhhh my plate is so full now and all the way through summer time, so i welcome Sony pushing it back to October, but at least its coming out this year!:)

Well I look at as the glass is half full , half empty theroy.

Yeah it sucks GT5 won't be released till the fall, but on the other hand it gives us time to finish playing some awesome games that are coming out between now and summer time.

Very true. I can understand their marketing strategy. I've still got a small stack of games to finish myself and some good ones still down the pipeline so I'm not loosing sleep. I just wish PD would trickle out some bits of info on the game or something to keep the excitement up.

I predict a by Christmas release for GT5 as far as the US goes.

That'll be the bundle I get since I sold my PS3 long ago, then I can catch up on some of the Sony exclusives that should be dirt cheap by then.

I think the PS3 was planned for a 10 year run so hopefully at least before then. :smoker:

What? Did they delay it again? ;)

Its coming out in October, and its pretty solid info. My co-worker who reviews for Kumbo on the side pretty much comfirmed it will be out in October from inside sources. We would have seen GT5 hit our shores and the rest of the world this summer,Japan would have seen it next month.

The delay was due to the 3D tech that is now being pushed hard for Sony Tv's and hardware. If you didn't know, even my local news yesterday announced in there tech bite segment, all Sony PS3's and Blu Ray players will be getting a firm ware update that makes the hardware 3D capable in July 2010.

Meaning if you the consumer has the hardware , you won't have to get a 3D tv to watch 3D media , such as games and movies, all that would be needed is for you the consumer is to buy the 3D glasses.

Now when 3D signal is being broad casted through your Tv provider, thats when you will have to buy a 3D tv to watch the signal that is being broad casted in 3D.

Long story short , Polyphony delayed the game to install the new 3D tech, other than polishing here and there the game is done.

There's going to be a pushed patch to PS3's that install the 3d software, you'll probably just need the glasses and a regular lcd/plasma screen. I know for 3d gaming on the PC you just need a capable vid card and a screen of at least 120 h. So I would imagine the PS3 has the output power.

Would GT5 lets users do that? Actually pick a car and have online teams? If so I am down! I get my new slim today, my 60 gig died on me 2 months ago after 4 years and 5 months of service. Goodbye 60gig, :wavey:hello 120gig!:yesnod:

Remote teams, where control of the car is passed between different people in completely different locations, I don't know. It might have that possibility somewhere.

Likely it would require actually getting 3 people physically together per team, where they can actually hand off the steering wheel/seat.

BUT that being said, if they have gone to the lengths of putting in true 24hr races, day/night cycles, weather, I have to believe they have some sort of feature for multiple driver cars.

I have to actually GET a PS3 still, but given the variety of upgrades that have been happening, I'm not disappointed I waited. Besides, I can actually afford it now :)

dillsrotary
06-17-2010, 08:50 AM
We could do teams (each drive a different car at the same time) of the nurburgring ring (about 7-8 mins per lap), but you have to kill a beer every lap.

For some reason I don't get upset that all the cars will not have damage to them, no other GT game had it, so damage to me is nice after thought, but it's definitely not the moving decison in buying the game.

Damage or no damage GT5 is going to be one helluva game!

Fast and the Furious has a noticeably worse impact than games like GT*. Now some of the more recent Need for Speed games... harder to defend sometimes.
