Hello all, I'm new to the forum to imports and to rotaries...I currently drive an 06 Mustang GT. I know, I know..mustangs suck yada yada yada, but I am considering seriously buy an RX8 this week. I want to know tuning potential.. Im not the guy that asks and doesnt do anything. I want to know how to make 8 blow doors off of a mustang, or if it is at all possible. love the way it handles, needs more speed. let me know guys. othing stupid shooting for 300 rwhp. thanks.

You'll need a turbo for that for the 300rwhp your looking for.

Another thing, like A LOT of people will tell you, the 8 isnt meant for straight line speed. Things like exhaust/intakes/etc wont give u much of a hp difference hence why you need a turbo for real gains.

Got a kit in mind and is it the same as throwing one on a v8? not looking for crazy straight line speed but it shoudl be able to hang with a 13.6 second car..or can it?? what are some et's guys... post em

You're not going to find much of the information youre looking for about ET or trap. I know where you're coming from. If you really REALLY like the way the RX8 handles and how it looks, you're going to have to overlook the lack of power or the potential to make power. If youre not prepared to do that, you aren't going to be happy with the RX8.

No, it's not like installing a turbo on a V8. You're not going to be able to pick from 10 different shops in town that can work on it / tune it. It's an eccentric engine that has some extremely cool characteristics, but if you're not ready to live, eat, drink and sleep "rotary", I wouldn't do it.

The best verifiable quarter mile time by a turbo Renesis RX8 is 13.16 @ 107.66 mph. There are faster RX8's out there now making more power, but nobody has posted a slip or a video. Please, anybody, correct me if I'm wrong about that.

RX-8 is the least tuning friendly sports car for sale today, period.

I love my 09 RX8 GT, but then I didn't buy it for the quarter mile. I just love the sound of the rotary, 9k redline and incredible handling. If I wanted something for the quarter, I would have kept my 07 Yamaha R1.
Seriously, there are more important things than going straight. But I may get dissed for saying this, but buy a Nissan 370z, if you're into tuning and the quarter mile.

Thanks for the input guys. Keep in mind ets aren't too teribly important but I just like the power to do what I want. Had a 97 GS-T (before the movie came out) andjustlovedthe stock feel of the turbo. So 370 huh. Doesn't look as sharp and definatley doesn't handle as well. 3.16 is about as fast as anyone needs to go on the street. Thanks again guys may still grab one.

I guess you have been reading this board...

Do some independent researches outside of the rx-8 club, and you will get objective answers towards the 370z.

^^ not so fast my friend

CARANDDRIVER has a point tho, cuz it really sounds like Rx-8 is NOT what you're looking for.

Older Rotary engines are more mod friendly. not the newest Renesis. Mazda did a remarkable job squeezing almost every single HP out of the same 20+ yr old 13B design. so dont expect to get a lot of hp out of simple mods like mid pipes, intakes, etc.

To beat a stock 06 Mustang ? take them to a track with a lot of twisties :) you will eat them alive. but if it has a lot of straights ... hmm ... V6 you will have a chance, not V8.

I drove a V6 08 Mustang(rental) for 4-5 days. Yeah i know its not V8 blah blah blah, but omg it handles really bad. I had no problem doing it in my Rx-8 at the same speed (over 60 mph), but in that mustang, I was afraid getting a roll over and I have to slow down (which is even MORE scary)

Classy - definitely not a fit for the 8.

this thread seems like it's heading in the wrong direction...

but like other members said if you're looking for a stop light to stop light torque monster, go find another car. as wonderful as it would be to just drop a turbo in the renesis its not. the availabilty of tuners for it isnt has bountiful like there are for other piston cars.

you admire the handling, then get the car solely for that.

You might want to take a look at this book.

Calm down....

Just like NYCGPS said, it sounds like you want straight line speed. If this is the case CarAndDriver is doing you a favor by telling you that unless you want to spend an additional 6K or higher (on FI) you will not be able to achieve this.

If you get i/e/h and put an ice pack in front of the air intake, you should see flat 13's in the 1/4.
Drill a couple of holes in the back bumper, you should see 12's with a good launch.
For drag racing purposes, go with the 4 speed AT, that way the car won't waste any time changing to 3rd gear during the run.

Dude...if you got the loot...F it....buy the 8 and make it into a monster, but as everyone above said, it's going to turn into a labor of love as far as maintenance and it's going to cost you out the yin yang

Still considering it. Looking for a black r3. Sorry for losing my cool up there just came off sort of rude IMO. Who here has actually put a turbo on. thanks for the positive input guys.

^^^^^ mmmmmm....black r3. Now that would be beautiful. I just bought the 09 GT because I just love the way it looks from the led tail lights to the those front fender flare which you can see from the drivers seat. The RX8 looks like no other sportscar on the road and they are rare enough that you don't see you coming and going every other block.
Plus, I love the way it sounds.
