This was too easy and too cool of a trick to not share it on the Discussion. It is posted in the Interior forum section too. After thinking of doing the center console covers with leather and padding , I thought outside the box and then discovered going from the opposite approach was the answer :)
Now it is padded well, comfortable for those non racing commutes and long drives and it looks stock because it is from the outside.
A double stitched leather cover would be great but the stock 2008 cover looks good as it is. And this fix costs 5 cents or less and takes 5 minutes.
