View Full Version : can I redline my car now?
zerobanger 01-07-2004, 01:13 PM I am at 601 miles now.
since I bought the car Dec 30, I have driven in mixed conditions, I tried to keep between 3K rpm and 6K, on a rare occasion I hit 7K or so.
So my question, can I redline it?
NAVILESRX8 01-07-2004, 01:14 PM I tried hard not to redline it before 400 miles...I ended up winding it out daily around 700 miles....she's got 1200 now, no ill effects....
ptiemann 01-07-2004, 01:16 PM You can redline it on day #1 as far as my dealer and the manual say, just don't do it all the time. Don't drive for a long time (?) at the same RPM, I was told, particularly not for a long time at high rpms. Hearing the beep was part of my test drive.
Sea Ray 01-07-2004, 01:23 PM I have not heard the 'beep' yet and I am at 1070 miles. hmmm...
Genom 01-07-2004, 01:53 PM Rev it up guys. Hit the 9000RPM mark every so often to help prevent carbon buildup. It's good for the car :D
i redlined in my first 10 miles...i then relaxed until after 600 miles hten i redlined it again...after 1000 miles i regularly redline here and there...i'm getting better and better at hearing the almost inaudible redline buzzer

Agreed. I try to hit redline once per trip; or at least once a day.

If that is the case then my 8 has carbon constipation because I still haven't heard BUZZ!!!! :p
Genom 01-07-2004, 02:55 PM Time to give it some gas and enjoy one of the benefits of the rotary engine. It likes to rev. A lot. Seriously. Just give the damn car what it wants! :D

more like time to give it some gas and enjoy one of the benefits of owning a sports car! it'd be like buying a big screen HDTV and only viewing VHS tapes on it
EDIT: wait, i forgot you're only at 600 miles...i'd redline just once in a while not every trip...especially in the cold weather

How to do it right:
Close all windows, turn off all stereos, etc. After starting off in first, shift at 6K or so to second. Stand on it until the thing bucks like a bronco. This means that you have reached the fuel cut point somewhere in the 9,000-10000 RPM range.
If you still haven't heard the beep you need to turn up the hearing aid or take it back to the dealer and tell them it has a missiing or broken buzzer.
Now wasn't that fun?? :D :D
RX-GR8 01-07-2004, 03:40 PM in second gear at redline how fast will you be going?

Cold weather for me is mid 60s BRRRR :p I live in Hawaii. And that is night time temp. We rarely have days where the temp does not get above 70 :)
Keshav 01-07-2004, 04:36 PM buying an RX-8 and not winding out the engine is like getting married to a super-model and then going without sex.
Just do it. Bring a change of underwear.

I plan on it, its just a new car I dont know if its broken in enough at 600 miles.
Icanrel-8 01-07-2004, 05:30 PM Search the topic on this site... I think it was here that I read a very thoughtful and detailed discussion of break-in and revs and all that. If I was sure, I'd have stuck on the link.
What I got was pretty much this: While avoiding excess high revving, break the car in the way you plan to drive it, and avoid long periods of travel at the same speed/rpm.
zerobanger 01-07-2004, 05:38 PM I read that in the owners manual. Never mind, thanks anyway.
