View Full Version : unmarked police cars
i3man 01-07-2004, 04:22 AM In Hawaii we have a lot of unmarked police cars. The rookies have to drive standard blue and white marked cars...looks like big Chevy Impalas. But once you get past a certain number of years on the police force here, you can drive pretty much whatever you want withing certain guidelines and the only way you know it's a police car is because it has a blue light on top the roof.
Most of the unmarked cars were your typical "muscle car" types.
Trans-Am
Z-28
Regal Grand Nationals (long time ago)
Mustang SHO
In recent years the SUVs have become popular police cars just like they have with the general public. But tonight I was surprised to see as an unmarked police car...can you guess???
No, not a RX-8 but a G-35 Sedan. Pretty hot looking police car wouldn't you say?
Senseny 01-07-2004, 07:54 AM Pretty cool cop car. Which European country (Switzerland or Sweden) has their highway patrol in Porshce 911s? At least they used too. Someone help me out.
i3man, thanks for the info on unmarked cars in the islands. Next time I am in Maui I will try to keep that in mind.
jdaled 01-07-2004, 09:55 AM We have lots of unmarked police cars here too. I think most commonly they're Camaro Z-28s, but I've seen others, always American made. The worst part is, there's no external indication that they're police cars. Sometimes you can see the strobe-type police lights mounted inside the rear window, or behind the rearview mirror on the windshield, but often they use stobe lights in the tail lights and grille. Sometimes you can see that the driver is wearing a police uniform, but there also, often the windows are tinted and it's difficult to see who's driving.
Fortunately the police here are somewhat laid-back in their attitude; you've really gotta be seriously violating before they'll waste any time on you... UNLIKE in Virginia (right Elara?), where the police are just hovering around waiting to catch you in anything they can.
DragonStar4681 01-07-2004, 11:27 AM Here in Utah i have seen a Marked Mustang GT as far as unmarked. there use to be a black viper that patroled the long strech of highway out side st george

Oddly, I think that it was the Germans, but I'm not sure. However, I remember about ten years ago or more the English were running V12 Jaguars for Highway patrol. Now that's POSH!
stormchase13 01-07-2004, 04:16 PM IL State Police have unmarked Crown Vic's, Impalas, Mustangs, and Camaro Z-28's.....and those are just the ones I've seen here in the St. Louis Metro East (ISP Dist 11 - Collinsville). Not sure who (State, County, or Local), but somebody has an unmarked Ford Taurus. Until I traded it for the RX-8, I had a '95 Z-28 with an extra antenna for an amateur radio rig. I enjoyed listening to the CB while driving down the interstate as the truckers would think I was one of the unmarked D11 cars.....ahh, the good ol' days.
I also lived in Huntsville, AL, for a couple years and they had a red corvette decked out w/ D.A.R.E. decals. They must've been magnetic/static because one day I witnessed the vette, sans decals, trolling along South Parkway (US-231) and eventually pull somebody over - gotta love those concealed strobes. Eventually, rising maintenance costs forced HPD to sell said vette.
Generally around here, an unmarked Mustang or Z-28 police car will almost never be convertible or have T-tops (safety in case of roll over), and will almost always have one of those generic IL license plates (@## ####, @ ### ###, or ### ####).
ZooM-ZooM_8 01-07-2004, 08:23 PM The cool thing about Japan's highway patrol is that they got all these kinds of kick ass sports cars. I've seen R32,R33 and R34 skylines ,They also got a buch of RX-7 Fd's and some Mitsubishi GTO's and more japanese sports cars i've forgot. They've also got awesome paint jobs and for those who have seen them, do you know wat those big clear plastic pieces are on the hood?:)
Speed-ER doc 01-07-2004, 08:31 PM We have some state troopers here with pickups, as well as SUVs, mustangs, camaros. They all will have "exempt" license plates with no letters, just numbers, and small letters at the top saying exempt (from registration fees). Trouble is by the time you get that close, it is toooo late. Helpful if you are about to pass one on the freeway though!
If a state trooper here stops you, for anything, you will receive a citation. There is no talking your way out of it, although I haven't had the reason or opportunity to try my "going to work" one.
SCiMMiA 01-07-2004, 10:21 PM In GA, you cannot be cited for a traffic violation by an unmarked, but they're all Crown Vics here.
paradigm 01-08-2004, 12:30 AM Here in south florida there's an unmarked Roush stage 3 mustang. A friend of mine got pulled over by it while driving her own mustang.
TrAsHeR 01-08-2004, 12:31 AM Oh man, they almost busted my ass this morning. You should also mention that in Hawaii cops on motorcycles are the ones with the laser guns :)
Came down the offramp in Mililani, going to Honolulu at 9:30am. Hit it pretty hard with 70-80 miles, the cop was standing on the first right turn, on the right side. Luckily I was covered by an SUV and was able to break when I saw the dude standing there. He jumped on his bike and took a car out that was just behind me. Man, my heartbeat went uphill, harder then rev'ing in the first gear. I've only had my license for 2 month now, got around violations so far. Jesus was on my side this morning ;)
