c41250n 08-20-2009, 10:32 PM but the tire sucks!!
Z0oMzo0m 08-20-2009, 10:36 PM You think so?? i think they are the best tire i have ever had on any of my cars... sound, feel, and wearness.. My front tires lasted 50,000!!! thats incredible!
maybe not good for roadcourse, but reg. street use. But hell you cant beat the price..
elysium19 08-21-2009, 02:49 AM The price is GREAT, but I agree, they have some downsides. I went through two sets of these so I have experience with them. I really did notice that they were very unpredictable and sketchy in the rain. In the warm/dry they are great, to be sure. But treadlife is poor- I got approximately 50% greater life out of my bridgestone S-03 tires (my third set of summer's with the rx8), with same driving style basically. Also, the complaints about road noise during the second half of the tires are definitely true, it's very loud, relatively.
You really can't beat the price, $500 for a new set of ultra high performance rubber. Just be aware of the couple of limitations.
For what it's worth, tire rack had a closeout last year and I got the s-03's for the same price, $120 a pop, and these tires are better in every way. Absolutely amazing, rain and dry, under any conditions, grip is phenomenal, AND much better treadlife. The s-03's have been discontinued, but the replacement is the RE050A Pole Position, which is just as good if not better. But they are $215 each... Moral of the story, keep your eyes peeled for deals and grab them when they pop up. I plan on doing so over the next few months and just keeping them in the shed a few months till the current ones wear out completely....
swoope 08-21-2009, 05:23 AM much better choices for less money even at 125 bucks each...
beers
c41250n 08-21-2009, 06:52 AM fk452 are not even that expensive!
CarAndDriver 08-21-2009, 03:49 PM Crap at any price.
JeRKy 8 Owner 08-27-2009, 09:04 PM It's true there are better tires when it comes to handling, but you'll have to spend a good $300 - $400 more (total) for those. I also bought the S-03s from TireRack right before they were discontinued...and those tires lasted me about a year but they were friggin amazing.
The RE040s, which aren't quite as sticky as the S-03s, can last you two years if you don't speed too much with them or dog them out (assuming 12k - 15k miles a year). Even so, they still have great handling (much better than a lot of other tires people on this forum brag about), and more importantly, this is one hell of a deal. I looked at other tires too, but given the times we're in, I couldn't pass these up...$552 out the door for a full set, and I'm used to these tires too since I've owned two RX-8s. I just put mine on last week. Sure they're loud...but what the hell do I care? I bought this car for its handling abilities...not quiet tires.
Z0oMzo0m 08-27-2009, 09:15 PM i didnt post this up to hear shit about the tires, They are good tires for everyday daily driving, The price you can not beat. Yeah everyone has there opinion, but when it comes down to buying all 4 tires... its an excellent deal.
by time i got them mounted and ballanced and an alignment my total was $815.00 any where in town wanted 1,300.00 to get these tires mounted and balanced, then $$ for an alignment...
SO i didnt have any problem saving 500 bucks :)
JeRKy 8 Owner 08-27-2009, 09:25 PM Ouch...you really got hosed on the mount/balance/alignment (shouldn't have cost you more than $140 for all of the above), but oh well, at least least you got a deal on the tires. Dealership down here is doing alignments + mount and balance right now for $119

You have to ignore the dipshits like in post #7, for they have no clue about any aspects of car performance or engineering. For them, an all-season pos that gets them through mud, snow, rain is the real performance king. :icon_no2:
For me personally, I'd spend about $120 more for a set of four Star Specs (or similar), because when forking out 700 otd already my logic says "what the hell's another c-note, especially with a bit more dry grip."
Either way, thanks for letting everyone in on the deal. And once again, don't pay attention to inane comments about how RE040s are eclipsed by General, 99% of Kumhos, Federal, or any of the other garbage that the uninformed pronounce as "good" or "better than the stock crap".
77mjd 08-28-2009, 10:43 PM Has anyone ever tried Hankook tires for their 8? Never had that brand before and was wondering if they were any good.
GeorgeH 08-28-2009, 10:57 PM Hankook makes good tires. I've used them in the past on a Miata with good results.
I'm thinking of their Ventus V12 evo K110 for my next set of street tires. That, or the Sumitomo HTR Z III, which seems to be the best deal out there, assuming you can live with "only" a max performance summer tire. Even at full price they are cheaper than the discounted 040s.

Yeah...the reviews for Hankook 18s and 19s seem overall good. Ive actually had 2 sets of Sumitomo HTR+ before and I was very happy with them, plus they lasted way longer than the original Bridgestones.
Z0oMzo0m 08-29-2009, 12:10 AM Sumitomo HTR Z III <-- i had them on my eclipse and had horrible results. I know its a different car but... They always seem to start chopping on the edges and giving lots of road noise. But that was on my 2001 gs-t eclipse.. Who knows maybe the car had issues.. lol
