I wanted to remind all my friends here at the 8 club that Mazmart can provide several ratios ranging from 3.9 to 4.777. We can do complete diffs in used form or remanufactured rear ends built by Rick Engman who's been doing them for easily 45 years.

Our trade in price is $1350 on the 4.777 with brand new R&P (Mazda OEM). The other ratios are priced similarly.

How does the 3.9 compare to the 4.44 in strength?
I know I have enough torque to pull the "highway gear", but I wonder about how axles, drive shafts and such would hold up.

No strength issues. The purpose of any of the ratios would be to optimize according to your goals. The taller gears (Lower numbers) are desirable for people who have greatly increased low end torque and would like to reduce wheelspin accelerating and possibly improve fuel economy.

Although the torque delivered through the axles and driveshafts would, technically, be reduced when swapping in a 3.90 gearset the important thing to know is that the factory driveshaft and rear axles are good to about 420, or so (IIRC). The rear suspension links start to bend around 600. Even though it is improper to evaluate driveline strength in terms of h.p. doing so helps people to understand it a little better.

Just barging in here because I am thinking of a swap for myself. Sorry, Paul. ;)

Actually im maybe planning a change to 4.777 and LSD swap this winter.
Are you doing rebuild or new units? would you send out of the states?

Anyone have experience driving an otherwise stock 8 with a 3.9 rear end? What MPG numbers are you getting? How does the acceleration feel?

Acceleration on a stock or realatively stock 8 with 3.9's would be terrible. These are for cars with FI that are making torque. You make no torque.

Is there anything shorter available than a 5.12?
