Engine Rattling Sound around 5.5k rpm (video attached)

Hi,

Here is the link to the video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7vjEhKJztY

and

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LR-dRYHGh0g

I have a 2004 rx8 auto and it is around 96000km/almost 60000mile
Have this weird sound for quite a while. I change the coil, spark plug, and wire last year. But didn't change anything. The sound is getting worse. It get louder if the temperature outside is cooler.

What is causing this weird sound? Any one has any idea?

Thanks

I have rattle sounds when there are pens in my glove box or in the storage area in the door.

^+1 sad but true. Some times the obvious is overlooked. Good to check that first

but yes, a rattling noise is still heard at idle.

definately nothing to do with physical item in glove box or the door storage area.

The rattle sound can be significant louder when weather is colder.

I noticed the same noise today when I was on the freeway. I noticed it between 4-6000 rpm. I took it in for a diagnostic test and I'll let you know what they tell me. With me, I could only hear it when the car warmed up a bit.

my '04 mt (67k km) did the same noise from 6.5k rpm till redline (only if floored).
i used to think that the cause was dead cat, but sunday i tried to premix for the first time (100ml in 3/4 tank) and the noise disappeared!

2 things that come to my mind:
  • the omp has something wrong and don't provide the right quantity of oil
  • the cat is really gone and cause the engine temp to raise, so the "standard" amount of oil provided by the omp is no more enough to cool the engine

my 2 cents

please, feel free to notify any error of my english

Sorry to bring this post back to life - however - the sound in this post is exactly what I am hearing - cold I am fine - warm engine hear this crackling noise in 5-6 rpm range. Manual 04 - 156K - original engine - Changed out coils, wires, plugs. Seafoamed too! Also goes into "limp" mode with no power on load and crackling gets worse. I put in fuel injector cleaner mix - did help a little.

Now my CEL has come on with a p2096 - so i cleaned the MAF/IAT - replaced the O2 Sensor about two weeks ago because got a CEL on postion 2 OS sensor.

Wondering if this crackling (sounds like fuel starvation - misfiring) is a sign that the CAT is burned out?? Would heat up of the engine (and cat) make the engine struggle fuel wise and therefore create this noise? Would a semi-blocked CAT create this issue?

I just obtained a stock cat from a fellow Rx8 member and will install that tomorrow - but I just have a hard time understanding how a CAT problem can relate....

Any comments would be apprieciated - and I will be sure to report back my findings because it drives me crazy when I am reading a posting and it just ends without any comments on the final outcome or solution!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! grrrr.....

I got the exact same problem as DHPrx8. Same rattle sound, same rpm's, and occasional p2096...

Only a RB exhaust. Coils and sparks are brand new, clean MAF and intake regularly, checked the VFAD operation and is just fine. Can't find any vacuum leaks.

Almost 100k miles, runs fine apart from the rattle from 5-6k. No rattle when slightly accelerating, only on WOT. Slight power loss as well, but goes to readline.

First thought was cat, but will check the fuel pump. (Tried to get it loose earlier, but that's a pita without proper tools... )

Car 's bit difficult to start when hot and within a few minutes from shutoff. Battery's fine and got the faster starter motor. Sign of a bad fuel pump as well?

check cat as well just to be safe. generally people that have catalyst failures can't rev up too high without a serious loss of power, but better safe than sorry. But with the code you have I would lean more towards fuel pump. Some people use a screwdriver and a hammer to try and get the retaining ring off. Just be careful of the tabs that break easily.
