Just as the title says, I just put a brand new battery in and now the car will not idle. It runs fine, but once I let of the gas it dies. Any suggestions before I try to get it into the dealership?

I replaced it with a duralast gold that had the exact same specs as the mazda battery.

Check your MAF make sure its clean.

if its clean then ...

Your engine or Throttle body is bad. Have it check

 

It just seems weird that everything was fine until I replaced the battery...

 

Loose connections maybe?

 

I double checked all the connections and I even made sure we didn't knock anything loose.

The new battery wouldn't be the issue would it?

Plus the car is starting fine, I just have to keep my foot on the gas to keep it from stalling.

Nope. Everything was fine with the old battery.

Dealership said it wouldn't be the battery, I just dropped it off. I will let you know what they say. I am sure it will end up being something ridiculously expensive!

 

Its not the battery, if its the battery his car won't even start.

Most dealership will not check Throttle body so you might want to "give them a hint".

Turns out the computer lost all of it's memory. Dealership said that they weren't sure why. They had to redownload everything to it. Had to pay for it though since I am at 88k miles.

 

you got ripped.

If they're talking about the "missing" of LTFT and STFT then yeah of course its gone, you pulled your battery.

If your computer is messed up you will see a CEL of self check failed and your car might not even start.

They gave you a bs excuse so they can charge you an hour of labor for it.

If you changed your coils, plugs, and wires already then I can 99% guarantee you that its either your throttle body, or your engine.

Oh yikes! They made you reflash the whole computer? Did it solve the issue you were having?

In the cases where I had extreme fuel trims with my K&N Typhoon II (like +19% at idle) the car would die at idle when I reset the computer system. It would have to learn the trims before it would be fine for daily driving.

I just changed my battery, figured it was reasonable for an '05, and I am having the same experience as the original post; my car won't idle. I've only started the engine twice since replacing the battery, so maybe things will adjust after a couple more cycles. The car had no power for less than five minutes; it'd be weird to lose essential settings from such a short duration. More later.

 

What a rip. Lost it's settings? Thats a new one.

 

I just started the car again, third time since the battery installation, and it idles fine now. Weird, but cleared.

 

I never had any problems when I had my K&N.

Anyway, yeah, he got ripped.

a "healthy" throttle body & Engine will NOT have a hard time idling. so yeah you get the idea.

 

i haven't been on the forums in a very, very long time but this JUST happened to me today. the car will be sitting for a week while i'm out of town for christmas. i hope it goes back to normal after a few more starts. i had to start the car at least 6 times while driving back home after replacing the battery.

 

Same thing happened to me a few months ago. Dealer said the car went into "relearn" mode and that it's normal (or at least it's known to happen" when the battery is disconnected. Basically you have to live with it for a couple sessions/days and the computer will figure it out again on its own.

Seems screwy, but it'll pass. Took my car 2 days to quit stalling and another day to find a good idle. Might speed things up to let it "idle hunt" (sit in neutral wile the revs vary from near-stall to almost 2k) for a minute or two.
