Mazda MX-5 Superlight Version Show Car to premiere at the IAA

Leverkusen, 5 August 2009.

A superlight show car capturing the pure essence of the world’s most popular roadster, the Mazda MX-5, will see its world premiere at the 63rd Frankfurt Motor Show, which will be held from 15 through 27 September 2009.
After 20 years of global success, Mazda MX-5 is the best-selling two-seat sports car in the world. At Frankfurt, Mazda will present a new take on its affordable roadster in an all-new show car, the Mazda MX-5 Superlight Version, designed at Mazda’s studio in Oberursel, Germany. A pure show car, it takes the lightweight technology that Mazda is famous for to a new level, which improves driving performance, handling, fuel economy and CO2 emissions. This is combined with a radical exterior design requiring no windshield, and sporty chassis settings for pure roadster driving fun.
The new Mazda MX-5 Superlight Version will be unveiled at Mazda’s press conference in Hall 3.1, Stand A7, on 15 September, at 12:45 local time.

I actually kinda like it. I wonder if it had any chance at passing safety laws?

I'd use swimmer goggles. Mazda speed ones likely too heavy.

It looks photoshopped, like someone took a concept car then put regular mx-5 wheels and interior on it. That's just the first pic I'm talking about. And did anyone notice the iPhone dock in the second picture?

I am guessing it will weigh about 2200 or so....which still isn't really that light for only having like 166 bhp. If only the Miata had a motor worth giving a shit about, then it would be something special, but because the motor is about as interesting as an overcast monday morning, the MX-5 never really did it for me. Imagine a super high reving 1.5 liter inline 3 or something... Think 200 bhp or so. Then the Miata would be awesome, and probably even lighter too. Instead it has a civic'esque type motor. Nothing gets me all hot and bothered like a 2 liter 4 banger at 6000 revs!!!!

I'd love to see a concept car like this weigh less than a lotus elise <2000lbs. That would give us hope for a 2000-2200 lb production car.

lol. would you prefer a 2.3 litre MS3 Engine in one?...may be happening, but only the STD 2.3.

BTW: Off Topic saw a 3 MPS (MS3) yesterday in showroom, very nice indeed.
My parts manager mate says virtually all the torque steer has been eliminated by PCM, it is no longer a "lane hopper" like the first version MS3.
He was impressed with the drive.
