I'm a new 8 owner so im just trying to get all the facts straight and under one post.

Change oil- 2.5-3k
Check plugs-25k
Change plugs-30k-40k
Change coils-depends on climates etc...check every 25k
Fluid flush-15k-20k (coolant atleast once a year)

Any other maintence and milage to do it?


Figured this post will help me out alot along with other new owners aka good refrence post. Lets keep the flames to a minimum please!

 

The RX8 doesn't follow any different regular check-ups than any other vehicle. Much of this stuff depends on your driving habits but for the most part it's typical.

Oil changes can be kept to 3,000 miles. I wouldn't do 2,500 miles unless you're only driving 3 to 5 miles a day or otherwise taking lots of really short trips.

I'd check your plugs every 25,000 miles but I'd change them every 30,000 - 40,000 miles depending on their condition. The plugs tend to last with the stock ignition system.

Ignition coils are hit or miss but they average about 25,000 miles before they could begin to go out.

Fluid flushes are the same as every other vehicle. I'd flush tranny fluid every 15,000 to 20,000 miles but that's just me. You can go as long as 30,000 I imagine.

 

Other than doing oil changes at 3000 miles, follow Schedule 2 in the owner's manual.

On the last item...there's really no such thing as a tune-up these days. That bit the dust when the last distrubuter went to the retirement home.

I have 37K on my car, 31K on plugs as they were changed at 6K. Should I go ahead and do the plugs, coils and wires and call it a day?

Many people have over 100k on their coils. Don't believe all the hype and paranoia here.

Just get an extra set. When they fail you will know.

No sense in replacing something when it doesn't need it.

 

^agreed..i'm at 50k miles and still on stock coils...but once I get that first misfire at high RPM's they're gettin changed...

The Coils seem to fail mostly in the Hot climates. I would put them under the service as required list. If you have some extra $$ you could possibly save your next problem. You can check them(DIY section) if you are having a problem other wise they are most likely fine.

That's a far stretch from saying "most people" get 100k out of their coils. Most people haven't driven their RX8 100k miles to begin with.

There's no "hype" or "paranoia" regarding the coils on the RX8. There are multiple threads documenting quite a lot of failures so I think we're beyond the point of proving if there's a problem.

I'd prefer not to feed the OP false information regarding which parts to keep an eye out for. Notice I said the coils tend to go out at an average of 25,000 miles not that they need to change them regardless.

 

as far as engine maitenance is concerned, you guys are forgetting coolant flushes at least every other year. coolant changes are very important to help retard the internal corrosion on the rotor housings. the rotary engine is very sensitive to fresh oil and coolant as well as proper ignition timing and spark. but timing isnt really an issue with the renesis. just be mindful that the oil is used to cool the engine as well as lubricate and fresh coolant is very important.

That's a very good thing to forget. There is no need to change modern coolant anywhere near that often.

Subsequent Fills 5 years / 60,000 mi. (96,000 km)

 

82k miles on orginal coils. Runs nice. I assume the coolant hasnt ever been flushed, but I need new radiator hoses due to a small leak from ate up factory hoses. Ill flush it when I change them soon.

As for trans and diff. fluids, I dought mine has ever been changed, and its still running great, but I'm about to change my clutch and flywheel out because mine are getting weak, i'll change my fluids out when I install those.

But other than that. It's running perfect in all aspects.

 

true, but not all early RX-8's came with the FL-22. my 05 did not.

Idon't trust coolant for 10 yrs I don't care what kind it is....I always lived by every 50k miles...that's y mine is gettin one soon!

 

^^im with you. i change mine every two years in teh 7's and will do the same starting next year with the 8. i'm just funny about that kinda stuff. i've seen too many corroded housings due to lack of proper coolant/distilled water changes.
