View Full Version : turbo timer cost
I helped get a friend a great deal on an Evo and I suggested a turbo timer cause he would wait like 2 or 3 minutes (the dealer made us watch like a 10minute video on how to take care of the heh) before shutting down the car. Anyone have any idea how much those costs with installation... even better maybe someone around the Southern, CA knows a good spot to have it done :)
Senseny 01-04-2004, 01:04 AM A standard turbo timer with only delayed shut down function will cost between 100-125. I recommend Greddy, HKS or Apexi. If you get one that gives you all sorts of data (1/4 mile time, 0-60, how many g. you just pulled) the cost can be up to 180-200. Figure on the install being around 50-75. I'm in PA, so I can't help with the installer.
Thanks for the info, i didn't know you get one that gives you more than just delaying the shutdown.
Senseny 01-04-2004, 01:18 AM I have the cheaper types on my turbo cars so I can't give any reviews of the ones with other features. He should do a little research.
A turbo timer is very easy to install yourself with the turbo timer harness. The harness costs about $15-$20.

Though I really doubt the EVO will benefit much from from a TT (most modern Turbo cars don't with the stock turbo). If you're deadset on getting one, Blitz is another maker to consider, they make nice compact TTs and also have a digital boost guage as a feature.

The dealer made us watch a video that says not to shutdown the engine 2-3 minutes. They were even gonna have my friend take a written test on it, LOL but couldn't find the test paper.

Do you know of a manufacturer who makes an RX-8 harness? How would this work with the chip in key?

Well, our turbo is also oil-cooled, which requires a short cool-down period in certain situations. Frankly, I always do one to be conservative.
I am too in the market for a turbo timer. I am considering the the Blitz DTT and the HKS Type 1 models.
HKS Type 1 - In addition to the the turbo timer, it has 0-60 timing (fairly acurate from what I have heard), 1/4 mile timing (about .5 seconds off from what I have heard), and some racing features, like ideal shifting points.
Blitz DTT - In addition, to the turbo timer, it has a boost gauge that is its in kpa's instead of PSI (the conversion is pretty easy) and is digital. It has features such as recording peak boost (so you don't have to constantly monitor the gauge while driving), warning boost levels (that you set). It also records lap times and has a stopwatch feature.
The Blitz DTT is much more compact than the HKS, so it should fit nicely on the steering column or on the bottom of the dashboard. I think you will need a location like this to utilize the timing features of either product. I'm still trying to decide whether to go with the Blitz or get the HKS and either a Defi or Autometer Analog Boost Gauge as I do not generally like digital gauges.
If you are going to have someone install it, I suggest having a few things you were planning to have done be all performed at the same time. For example, I'm planning on upgrading my tranny fluids to redline and I figure getting this done at the same time (assuming the price isn't too high, otherwise I'll do it myself).

I'm guessing it's just Mitsubishi being overly cautious... Who knows, maybe the EVOs cooling system for the turbo isn't as good as Subaru's and I'm totally wrong. But I thought Revhappy said it was both oil and water cooled, so only under extreme driving would a TT be necessary. But hey, it's only $125 so if it's something he is going to worry about it's worth the investment for that alone.
So it's just oil cooled Rev? I seem to have forgotten where we had the conversation about this before and couldn't remember what you had said for sure.

It is water and oil cooled. I posted about a month or so ago about this and the wording from the EVO's owner manual regarding the short cool-down period. Unfortunately, I can't remember exactly when and in which thread!
Edit: I found the thread:

I don't know who would have a turbo timer harmess for the 8. You should be able to get an OEM harness from Mazda.
