"THEY" don't. You do. If you dont want chips and dings from rocks.

I should have said, "To keep your headlights on the car during hard braking."

Yeah, that's the ticket.

Considering all the rock chips I have from street driving here on our crappy roads I sometimes wish I was all taped up. Either that or a Knightrider-esque polymer shield.

But I won't wear a bra (nor Manziere/Bro) ;)

HID headlamps are almost $1000 each to replace if you crack the lens.

Hi

I taped mine cause the damage to headlight is so expensive.....and you cant use patty and paint job to cover it back unlike front bumper....

In real racing people tape the headlights, tail lights, and side markers to reduce the likelihood of a rock or other debris or contact breaking them. And also so they don't leave a big mess of sharp broken glass and plastic on the track when they do crash or get hit.

For track days, lapping, time trials, people do it to reduce the chance of a rock cracking the lenses. Though I have to wonder how much difference a layer or two of paper-thin (literally) painter's tape is going to make. Better than nothing, I suppose, but I don't bother anymore (halogens FTW! ;) ).

I taped up mine one (as seen below) just cause it looked cool to black out the headlights. :yesnod:

Also, it's too keep broken glass off of the track in case you get into trouble. Plastic front ends bend, but the plastic lenses on our headlights/markers shatter.

In "real" racing, Grand-Am KONI series, you can't tape up any of that crap. During day races, headlights aren't even installed, most run carbon fiber or some other kind of insert. Side markers have to be installed but not functional and the taillights must be functional.
