View Full Version : Road and Track's Readers Choice
6speed8 01-03-2004, 08:05 PM I just watched Road and Track's Readers Choice for 2004 on Speed Channel. R&T had five contenders - The RX-8, 350Z Roadster, WRX STI, Porsche 911 GT-3 and the BMW 5. All cars were tested by the R&T staff, plus they were driven by both testers and readers, including Jay Leno. You can vote for one of these fve finalists at roadandtrack.com\ Guess which one I voted for?

NAVILESRX8 01-03-2004, 11:23 PM I voted for the 350Z.
No really, I voted for the RX8.
revhappy 01-03-2004, 11:46 PM They just repeated it on the speed channel and they had some interesting commentary on the cars, especially from Jay Leno.
Below are the test results, which I think are basically a rehash from the earlier tests during the year (at least on cars they did test):
Slalom Skidpad Braking 60-0 0-60 1/4 Mile
RX8 65.4 .88 114 Ft. 5.9 14.5@95.4
STI 68.4 .88 111 Ft. 4.9 13.3 @ 103
ZRdstr 67.2 .88 120 Ft. 5.9 ??????
911 GT3 68.7 .92 119 Ft. 4.2 12.4@113.8
5 Series 64.1 .86 119 Ft. 7.2 15.4
They noted that the RX8 lacks some torque, the back-end broke loose first on the slalom test and that there was some moderate understeer at the track. Overall, they said it was a pleasure to drive and Jay Leno had nothing, but postive things to say about it.

cool rev thanks.
Senseny 01-04-2004, 12:36 AM The show was good, very positive overall about the 8. The fellow who had the negative torque comment about the 8 was a selected reader, not an editor. Maybe his understanding of the characteristics of the rotary was lacking. If he didn't keep the revs high enough then that could explain that. The car looked great being put through its paces though. I'll vote in a day or so, and it'll definitely be for the car that doesn't have pistons.
Speed-ER doc 01-04-2004, 04:14 AM Unfair comparison videos! Mitani was driving the WRX STi a lot faster (or so it seemed) than the other drivers in the other 4 cars.
It did look hot.....
6speed8 01-04-2004, 05:24 AM Yeah, Leno was quite frank (and funny) with some of his comments:
On the WRX STI Leno Said " the hood scoop must be functional, cause it isn't there for asthetics"
On the BMW 5 Leno said "some cars are so sexy you just want to hand wash them to run your hands over it, but with the '5', you'll just want to take it through a car wash"
I believe the show will be repeated Tuesday, Jan 6 at 09:00 on Speed channel (that's what my cable menu listed)
