View Full Version : PS2 info? 1st person shooters, racing!!!
I just bought a PS2 an hour ago and plan on going to buy 2 games late tonight or tommorow! Are the Tokyo Extreme games good? NFSpeed? any other racers? I also want a good 1st person shooter...Red Faction? Hitman? Just need some help guys so throw down your opinions...Sin
cueball 01-03-2004, 07:34 PM Gran Turismo 4 isn't relesed in America until April.
Its not a first person shooter, but Grand Theft Auto is a must. Probably the best game out ther right not. It has shooting, driving, amdn story based missions.
wakeech 01-03-2004, 07:50 PM 1st person shooters on consoles almost universally suck, but i've not tried metroid on the Cube.
for driving games, you cannot do better than the PS2.
NFS Underground, GT3 (old but still better than nearly anythign else), F355 Challenge (which is actually unbelievably challenging), and others that sell well that i don't really like... all tremendous, and outclass any offerings on any other system, short of that really amazing one that's for you PC guys...
GT4 in April! Damn...Im somewhat uninformed on PS2 games so anymore than GTAuto?
So GT3 for 20 bucks right now is what I should do?
cueball 01-03-2004, 08:02 PM Metal Gear Solid 2 is another great game.
SSX is one of my favorite sports game out there.
I don't have too much experience with first person shooters, James Bond: Nightfire was pretty good. It is kind of short so I would recommend renting it instead of buying it.
mental pimp 01-03-2004, 09:04 PM get GT3 as soon as possible!, took me months to beat and was awsome, i even mest up my ps2 controller when i had it
Elara 01-03-2004, 09:08 PM SSX 3 is pretty fun -that's kind of a racing game :) - and Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando is pretty fun, if you like that kind of thing.
I got my PS2 in mid-Nov with GT3 and am _this_ close to beating it. Just S-license and races to follow.. quite a challenge.
I just got a PS2 for Christmas in anticipation for GT4. GT3 is a must have and I got a used copy at Gamespot at the mall for 8.99, also managed to get WRC: World Rally Championship and Grang Theft Auto 3 used. All 3 games were $27 because they are having a buy 2 get one free sale. I haven't played any of them yet save for GT3 all the time at friends house etc. The reason for this is because I'm hooked on NFS Underground... It's a great game, very ricey, but I've never played a racing game that is able to capture the feeling of speed so well, great music and sound effects, and probably the best looking game on the PS2 I've ever seen. I haven't even played it online yet and this is the only reason I really bought the game, but the Underground mode is a lot of fun, and the drag racing and drift tracks are a blast and a nice change of pace.
The other game I own is Tony Hawk's underground, the whole series is great, and if you don't want to shell out 50 for that game definately get Tony Hawk 4 for 19.99 as a greatest hits title.
Just looking at an issue of PS magazine I picked up that has all ther reviews, Colin McCrae's Pro Rally 3, WRC: World Rally Championship, Midnight Club II, and GT3 get perfect Scores, as does the entire Tony Hawk series. As for FPS, I think So Com II is the one everyone is raving about and will be my next purchase once I get bored with what I just bought, this also got a perfect rating.
While you're out you may want to pick up that issue of PS magazine, it has all the reviews for the PS2 games in it, and will certainly help your buying decisions.
<goes back to whoopin up on ricers in his stealth Subaru in NFS>

Racer X-8 01-03-2004, 09:50 PM Socom has my two boys addicted! Me too a little, I sit there and watch. It's great online. It's Navy Seals .vs. the terrorists. Very worth the $$$. (I hope you've geared-up for online gaming.)
Help me out somebody, is it Socom II?
edit: OK, I just checked & Socom II is not out quite yet. Yeah, that's right. Otherwise, my boys would have been threatening to drop a grenade down my jockeys if I didn't take them to Best Buy for their extended christmas present. I'm ok for now. Not for long though...:(
edit again: OK Ike, if it's out, I don't know why I'm still alive. Could be, but I'm at a loss for my two boys lack of action if it's so. Hmmm...what is their plan....

That's the one, I have 3 friends that got playstation 2s for Socom II and GT4 just like I did for christmas, I have a feeling my work is going to suffer a bit :p
Thanx guys, just got back home with NFS underground and GT3!!!
Let me know if you plan to play NFS online, would be nice to play another beginner rather than jst get stomped by someone that has had the game for weeks.
Sorry IkeWRX, didnt get the one with the adaptor...179.99
Well the adapter is 39.99 at Best Buy should you change your mind, or if anyone else is playing NFS gimme a holler.

Racer X-8 01-04-2004, 12:27 AM Yeah, i bought the PS2 network adapter for my son inlaw at Kmart for the same (just a couple weeks ago for christmas). Then, you need ethernet to your computer ($15 for a D-Link DFE-530TX+ PCI Adapter card & you need a short ethernet cable) and a highspeed internet connection. Online gaming is the schiznet! You get a whole lot more out of your games! And that's a one-time expense for the life of the system, for about $65 total (not including highspeed monthly, you probably already have that anyway).
Speed-ER doc 01-04-2004, 02:13 AM Medal of Honor is a good first person shooter. The first mission is coolest (Invasion of Normandy, just like Saving Private Ryan!).
GT3 will keep you awake all night for weeks. Sort of like this forum. You can learn a lot about cars with both too.

I'm no expert on video game lingo but isn't Halo a 1st person shooter? Halo rules!
I do like the F355 Challenge that I played on a friends Nintendo or something.
I think Halo is X-Box, and from what I've heard by far the best X-Box game.
mental pimp 01-04-2004, 07:59 AM IKE if u got GT3 and u havent started , well , i suggest that you start now, so u can be it before GT4 comes out
Speed-ER doc 01-04-2004, 09:31 AM Speaking of GT3, has anyone beaten the Miata LS in the roadster endurance race? WTF, they don't let you mod the cars in that race, but one (computer's) car is faster than all the rest.
Wolverine 01-04-2004, 01:06 PM Need For Speed Underground is an absolute blast to play! Lots of customizing posibilities! Although there is no RX-8 in this game. Tokyo Extreme Racer 3 is not as fun, but if you want JDM, this is the game to get. It takes a while to get used to controlling the cars in this game. Once you get the hang of it, it's a lot of fun. The RX-8 is in this game! I used the RX-8 for a while until I opened up the R34 Skyline. I had to sell the RX-8 to buy parts for the Skyline. But don't worry, I just recently won 1 million credits so I was able to buy another RX-8.

According to that link, the Miata LS pits every 3 laps, so after 1-2 pitstops, you'll be in the lead.
I'm just having the worst trouble with S-licenses.
btw, What kind of customizing possibilities are with NFS Underground? I thought it doesn't get any more technical than GT3.
NFS:U is fun but soo rice lol. I <3 the blue flames that come out of the exhaust when you use the nitrous. Too bad N2O isn't flammable lmao. I <3 my 2.5rs though. I'm waiting to unlock the RX-7 so I can trade it in.

tsk, tsk, tsk... GT3 n00bs. heh heh heh...
winning races with mods is cheating.
the Miata endurance race is one of the easiest, just pace the computer to learn how to drive the track (braking for only 3 corners, #1, a lift for #4, brake long on #5 IIRC), then you just stop every 5 or 6 laps (depending on how hard you're driving the tyres, and if you're making any mistakes... curbs seem to wear them down a little quicker than not). it's an easy, easy win. (computers are stupid)
the superlicences aren't all that hard, but the F1 race you get after it all sure as hell is... what i can't get around is the huge power loss that happens as the engines wear out over the championship, 'cause you can't get them "rebuilt" (oil change) in the middle of it...

i think the sickest thing about that game is that not all of the things you can do to your car are ricey... they have some nice paint, some GREAT wheels (my favourite for my RX-7 are the 17" BBS LM series) and wicked special effects...
when you get your car's performance up to 100%, just lifting off the throttle when you're revving it up spits out phat flames... and starting races gets stupid hard as everyone's rear ends slide into each other... it's really stupid how bad the computer is, then cheats with the mystery car out of nowhere to cost you a good 15 seconds so that you don't win every race the first time 8-)... i really REALLY hate the realisticness of the traffic in this game, but as i was thinking about it, it's really good that they have it; when kids think about street racing through traffic, they'll realise just how absolutely dead they can get
the MaStEr DoRRRIIFFFFTOOOO!! mode is so so cool, i actually like drifting now, i "get it".
i think my best single drift so far was something really really stupid like ~63000, but you know that you only pull one of those off like 1/50 times you try... friggin' walls.

:D I'm not a n00b.
2 years ago I spent the whole winter playing that stupid game, had around 100 cars, all heavily modded, I think 4 F1 cars (684 685 686 F090 ?) and got where you are with the F1 championship/ HP loss problem. Then my kid completely erased my memory card.
Went in to play it and ???WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was so mad and depressed I gave it up completely. But I never did finish the Miata race to see what car you get for doing all the Endurance races.
Now I've cooled down, and starting to mess with it again getting ready for GT4!!!
Which will appear first, stage 1 or GT4?
Either way, looks like a good year coming up.

yeah, i've had that done to me on all the GT's so far... GT1 was great, and really sort of introduced me to the technical side of street performance (F1 had been all i'd known up until then), basically did everything in the whole game, then cleared and saved over for my bro's stupid FF7 game!!
and in GT2, that game was so, SO massive that if you tried to own all the special cars you could win it basically wiped my memory card (like crashed the game or something)... it was cool, 'cuase a little while before it all went blank my prized Mitsu EVO 6 had "0 hp" and i could enter it in any race!!...hilarity ensued.

That happened to me on my last mission on GTA3!! I gave it up completely. I'm suprised GTA3 and Vice City didn't get much attention in here. I thought the older pple in here would like GTA Vice City (throwback to the 80's).
On another note. Automodellista was a disappointment, but i do like messing around with the cars in the mountain passes. The customization only goes so far and the other courses suck.
I love Tokyo Extreme 2 because of how the challenges worked. Reminds me of American Grafitti the chance to drive around and look for the best in town to race. I haven't played 3.
PS2 sucks for FPS.
Well to further update you on my new racing games. WRC is a game for only hardcore WRC fans will truely appreciate, fun but it looks a touch dated (most games do compared to NFS underground) and the car control tales some getting used to. NFS Underground online is not a good idea if you don't have all the performance upgrades and have the tracks mastered. I got whooped badly online lastnight :p
sup3rbad 01-05-2004, 01:31 AM Once i get my adapter imma PM you IKE! i'm barely on the level two upgrades.

i've not played the Tokyo Extreme series... i hear from some that it's boring, and from others it's amazing... realistic-ish street racing action??
Automodellista WAS a huge disappointment... it's still fun to play in that stupid, funny, god-awful game kinda way... they tried too hard to work in drift physics, which at the highest levels of performance left your car undriveable (even in "grip" setup), so use of the walls is absolutely critical to keeping your car straight.
another game (not a console game, i think) i'd like to list as a disappointment is Initial D... i mean, it looks nice, and it's got some nice models for the cars, but holy christ are the dynamics bad. tracks are interesting enough, but i tell you, a Spirit R FD does NOT only do 178kph at the top of 5th gear... so stupid, i can't even begin... hahaha...

i'm not so sure... the old gold-standard GT3 does still absolutely blow my socks off, and lacks only in the environmental graphics (the repetative pavement skins, and bland cityscapes)... the cars themselves i still think are better than in NFSU, not to mention the best replays i've ever seen in a racing game.

Sounds good, I just got into the 80s as far as races complete and advancing is starting to get difficult...

stop joking around and get a decent car Mr. WRX ;)
quote teh zerobanger:
"The - 7 - CAN'T Lose!!!"
I'm still trying to figure out if there is a real difference between the cars, I've read there is and I've also read there isn't... Anyone know for sure?
Besides won't I just need a new engine halfway through the longer races if I get the 7? :p
wakeech 01-05-2004, 02:06 AM actually, not really very much. the dynamics of each one is actually quite different, as are all the experiential things (like the tach, although there might just be many and they double them up... i've not tried all the shit cars so i wouldn't know for sure, and the SOUNDS... really awesome, that).
the ratings each car gets (and real relative performance) is actually quite close through the game, and at different points in the story (where you have different mods of various type) changing the advantages different cars offer as the game goes on.
in the end, i dunno, most will be very equal but for sure the ricer's dream boat (Skyline) will do everything better than any car (whether or not that's true in reality).

not even... i found that i fried more #3's than front rotors in drag racing (when you get a good draft on a fast guy you can hit way over 360kph with the nitrous on)
