View Full Version : What was your car before the 8?
Rambling Man 01-03-2004, 01:10 PM Having just ordered a Titanium 6 sp w/ saddle leather seats, Grand Touring w/ 6 disk CD (not to mention a 100 bucks of Zaino), I’m curious about what people were driving before. Sorry if this has been discussed, didn’t find anything by a quick search.
Rambling Man 01-03-2004, 01:12 PM To answer my own question: a '95 Saab 9000 which I am very fond of and I don't know if I can part with.
Rotary Nut 01-03-2004, 02:22 PM '03 Acura RSX Type S. 3600 miles on the meter when I traded it on the spot on the 8. The car before the type S was a '02 VW Passat W8 the was repurchased under the Virginia lemon law!
S3/P3/E2 01-03-2004, 02:31 PM '96 Mitsu 3000GT SL. Sad to see it go, but now glad to see it go! :D
NAVILESRX8 01-03-2004, 02:43 PM I sold a modded 86 Corolla GTS liftback and traded in a 2000 Suzuki Grand Vitara.
winebrad 01-03-2004, 02:53 PM I was driving a 1989 Acrua Legend Sedan that we had in the family from day one. Since this was my daily commuter and it ws paid for I was going to drive it until is stopped then donate to charity. Well I got tired of waiting and now have my 8 in addition to the cars listed below. The Volvo is my wifes and the Expy is for family vacations and the boat. Anyone looking for a 89 Legend with 129,000 miles? $3,500.
JmurphRx8 01-03-2004, 03:10 PM 03 hyundai tiburon GT V6
PHA RX-8 01-03-2004, 03:13 PM 99 Mercury Cougar GT
Outlaws eXtreme 01-03-2004, 03:17 PM Ford Pinto '79, Bright yellow, with Volks Racing rims 15", and an HKS super charger.
Rx-Appreci-8 01-03-2004, 03:20 PM S3/P3/E2 has good taste in cars!
I also had a 1996 Caracas ("Hello Officer") Red Mitsubishi 3000GT SL. It was a great, low mileage, mint condition car when I sold it for the RX-8.
Before that I had two 280ZX cars. They were great too - which is why, out of loyalty, I NEVER dis the 350Z. Datsun/Nissan won my respect years ago. :)
SikRedRX-8 01-03-2004, 03:37 PM I highly modded 96 Prelude.
Vampyr 01-03-2004, 03:56 PM 98 Honda Civic EX
fredinlou 01-03-2004, 04:39 PM highly modded 98 vw gti vr6 sold only because it got hit a second time in the same place and most bodyshops suck i miss it a lot and will prob. buy another vr6 in a year or so when next gen is out. got s plan on rx-8 so i should be able to sell and not lose too much which was my plan from the get go, if you have never owned a german 6 cylinder you dont know what you are missing trust me
zoomzooomp5 01-03-2004, 04:47 PM 02 Protege 5 mildly moded, and befor that a trick out nissan 240sx silvia conversion. i missing both the cars but the 8 is makeing easier to forget.
8zoom 01-03-2004, 04:59 PM 1992 Mazda MX3-GS, a great car that I'm sorry to see go. Too bad hatchbacks don't catch on in the US.
SCiMMiA 01-03-2004, 05:01 PM '93 Plymouth Laser, which is essentially a 1st gen Mitsu Eclipse, back when they were building them jointly as Diamond Star Motors. Great car - still have it, and put all the many work miles on it (a real horse).
Tamas 01-03-2004, 05:13 PM '94 Ford Probe GT
I still love that car. Handles almost as well as the RX-8 (no joke)
FirstSpin 01-03-2004, 05:23 PM 01 Mustang V8, automatic; 42K or so. Loved it but the 8 is SO MUCH more fun!!!
Elara 01-03-2004, 09:42 PM I think I win for least impressive-A 1990 Ford Festiva and a borrowed 1993 Ford Taurus station wagon.

I don't know about that least impressive claim. We were a two mini-van family, I was driving a 1999 Plymouth Voyager.
WHealy 01-03-2004, 10:15 PM 01 Chrysler Prowler
silvercloud 01-03-2004, 10:30 PM A Prowler - cool!
What did you think of it? How did it drive?
I bet that's one car that will turn more heads than an 8

silvercloud,
I had a lot of fun with it. Yes it very much stuck out. Of course they only produced like 11,000 for US sale. But right now, I'd say our "8"'s are sticking out pretty much the same at least in my area. Of course as they become more common, that will probably unfortunatly change.
I was a stiff ride but still didn't handle as well as our "8"'s. It's acceleration was about the same. While it was an automatic, it had one of the best manulmatics I've ever driven. But parts cost, let's just say the "8" prices don't seem nearly that high to me after dealing with a limited production vehicle that was out of production!

Senseny 01-03-2004, 11:03 PM See my sig as I have had the 7 and WRX for 3 years and 2 years respectively. The car that died (threw a rod) right before I got the 8 was a 90 Tauras SHO. Before that I had an 88 Porsche 944, a 93 Eagle Talon (NA 2.0), an 87 Cabriolet, 86 Jetta GLI, 83 and 82 280ZX turbos and an 84 Prelude. I think that is everything. Bear in mind, my wife and I shared these cars so we always have had at least 2 cars.
241Commuter 01-03-2004, 11:05 PM '94 Miata (mostly stock), '98 Expedition (the boat-puller), '99 Mustang (my son's car). Before that, '93 Lexus GS300, '86 Nissan pickup, '83 Bronco (the 1st generation boat-puller).
shebam 01-03-2004, 11:18 PM '88 626 5-door Turbo that I bought new in Oct. '87. It belonged to everyone in the family at some time as I moved on for a while to a '93 626 ES (now my neighbor's) and a '95 BMW 530i (now my daughter's). I keept the '88 even after taking delivery of the RX8 in July; it had new suspension, engine mounts, etc. and was running great until some asshole ran a red light a couple months ago and totaled it. Not a great handler, but incredibly versatile, never stranded us or wouldn't start, and the engine and turbo, which was still a kick, did not hiccup or require more than routine maintenance in 15 years. Must be something to be said for changing the oil every 3K. And, no way that car had only 145 hp.
Mrs. SHOWOFF 01-04-2004, 12:42 AM 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse GT - still have her.
Actually someone tried to steal her a week ago - but luckly the punk was chased off before he could take off in my car.
LiquidChick 01-04-2004, 12:45 AM '00 eclipse gt..modded...
loved that car...but totalled it when i hit a 450 lb bear at 11 at night :(
Senseny 01-04-2004, 01:00 AM Liquidchick, didn't you post those pics here? or was it on the 7 forum. I am glad you were okay. Man that must have been frightening. Hitting a black bear at night--did you even see it at all? What is there like 7 bears in Florida--what the hell is the chance of hitting one.
LiquidChick 01-04-2004, 01:06 AM http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=17199
there's a link to some of the pics in that post...basically it was 11 at night...no lights around..the only way u can see these pics is b/c the cops pulled their cars up to the bear...the flash made the pics completely black....
both my insurance and the shop where my car was dropped off at ..had said this is the first they've heard of a bear accident..lol i find myself driving and having flash backs still.. like hitting a brick wall :o
Senseny 01-04-2004, 01:15 AM Liquidchick, I drilled a deer on a wet night in my Tauras SHO and it still affects my nighttime driving. My little run in with the deer didn't even mess my car up that bad, or kill the deer. So I can only imagine hitting something 4 to 5 times as large that is unseeable in the dark. Friggin frightening, and I don't blame you for being freaked out still. Like I said though, I am glad you are okay and hopefully nothing of the sort ever happens to you again.
LiquidChick 01-04-2004, 01:19 AM thanx...yeah i get alot of shit from my bf's friend..he has a wrx sti..which i was looking into getting...but when i had the rental..i freaked out over the littlest things...i worried alot...
i think the whole "race scene" days are gone... i'll always have that in the back of my head..just don't know why i feel like the only one to understand why i think the way i do..
rescue team even said it's a miracle i'm alive..why would i take another chance?? i'd rather drive on clouds..then worry how much HP my car has...
zerobanger 01-04-2004, 01:19 AM I still have my 1994 Rx-7 which as been my 350 rwhp daily driver for the past 2 years.
You can really appreciate the luxury the rx8 offers after driving the FD.
boothguy 01-04-2004, 01:20 AM '94 RX7 -- moderately modded. Can't top the bear story, but I did lean my car up against the tandem wheels of a semi one time doin' about 70 mph. You could actually make outu the word "Goodyear" on my smashed in passenger side door. Fixed it, still have it with almost 91k on the clock.
Before that, '86 RX7 Sport - bone stock. Still got it as well, with 215,000 miles on the original engine.

 i think i would've had a heart attack..right there...atleast i was knocked out... i can't imagine being awake knowing..i'm one with a semi..lol
Senseny 01-04-2004, 01:26 AM Zerobanger, my wife and I took our FD out tonight for about a 60 mile run and for christsakes my wife got a headache from the noise/jarring ride. Even I was like shit, this is annoying. I still love the speed and performance, but man it is tough to deal with the comfort issues after driving the 8 so much.
LiquidChick, you shouldn't have to take any crap about that. Accidents can be life changing experiences (thank God I haven't had a bad one--knock wood) and that needs to be respected. The problem with the bear could have happened in any car and maybe that is the critics point, but what really matters is how it affects you. No one can tell you how you should feel. If your priorities have changed, all the more power to you. Obviously you still enjoy fun cars, why else would you post here.
LiquidChick 01-04-2004, 01:30 AM yeah i know..i'm just getting shit b/c of jealousy..lol it was mentioned tonight from my bf's friend..that my bf is getting the 350z...i said...he wished...i got a comment back "you don't want him to get a faster car then you" it's just annoying..even more when the bf just laughs abt it... u know who's not gonna touch this car right?? yeah exactly...
Senseny 01-04-2004, 01:36 AM So you have an 8 and your man will have a 350z. Thats not a bad couple of cars. I like the 8 a bit better, so I would be jealous too if I was him or his friend. My wife usually drives the 8 and I get the WRX wagon, so trust me, I know jealousy. The FD gets weekend and fun time duty only. Well good luck with all and have a good night. Bedtime for me.
LiquidChick 01-04-2004, 01:38 AM nite... oh..and the only 350 he'll be getting..is in his dreams :)
Mrs. SHOWOFF 01-04-2004, 07:18 PM "Liquid Chick" - is that a club 3g sticker? I am GT Pilot on Club 3G.

Yeah, I thought the name sounded familiar!
cruzdreamer 01-05-2004, 01:49 PM 2002 Mazda protege 5 Red. Great car with great handling and looks but the 8 is twice the car! Only thing I miss is the better gas mileage and not having to worry about warming it up!

I'm impressed you had it for that long. My first car was a 93 Probe GT. Drove the that thing like a crazed teenager until that thing fell apart 4 years later.
But you're right. That was a very nice handling car.
IZoomZoomI 01-06-2004, 01:15 AM had a four door 1998 honda accord purple :D. Talk about two different extremes. Although I must admit the accord was more comfy.
