Love my 8... Considering a trade in for an FD + something pratical

First off, I love my 2007 brilliant black RX8. It runs great, always has run great, I love the ride, the sound, the look.

But lately, I've started thinking that I would like a vehicle eventually capable of towing, something 4WD that i don't mind getting covered in salt and sand in the winters.

So the idea came to me that if I were to sell my 8, I could pick up a dirt cheap SUV on the used (or new for that matter) car market and have enough money left over to buy an FD (fully realizing that these machines tend to be somewhat of a moneypit).

Right now it's just something I've been thinking about, and probably wouldn't do it for at least another year. Has anyone else ever thought of going backwards like this?

Depends on what you want, what you paid for your 8, and if you own it IMO.

for example: If you paid $17k for it, own it, and sell it for $15k then I guess it would just boil down to what you want. But if you end up losing a ton of money then no way IMO

Well for a nice FD in good shape and not a ton of miles on it you're looking from about 13k and up well past that...so it all depends on your financial situation...depending on how much u sell your 8 for but i would say (as long as it's paid off) all the money from that should b able to pretty much buy out the FD...and would have to make payments on the SUV(depending on new or used and price and how much money u have saved etc etc)....

I know I'd love to get an FD....I'm in the same boat as you looking for a "cheap" diesel truck 4x4 to play in the mud and tow/haul things...but i'll b keeping the 8...

I think you're on to something. If you're considering using the 8 as a daily driver I think it makes more sense to buy a more practical car as a DD and get an older FC or FD as a play car. Best of both worlds rather than compromise on both

Why would you ever think of doing such a thing???? Once you go 8, you never go back. Esp back to pistons. You are cheating on yourself and all of us. There is no love in this relationship. They could take my house, but they will never take my car!! (oh, and by car I mean my 8)

sure you can have a 4 banger on the side to drive to work, nothing wrong with that, but to give up the 8, dude, why?

So you basically have no money left for repair/maintenance costs that might add up after you get an FD?

Bad move.

FD as a daily driver seems like a waste to me....(unless it can be afforded to) granted I ride a motorcycle daily and live in CA....so salt and weather are pretty much non-issues.... depends on what your willing to accept I guess....

now that I think of it maybe I should get an FD.....hmmmmmm......

Ive considered doing the same (well, maybe not an FD because of $$). With crappy winters where I live, I just feel bad putting the 8 through that every day. As soon as I move to a place where I have the extra parking (only have 1 spot now), Ill strongly consider buying a beater for a DD as well

I guess even if you may not always have the $$$ for the upkeep on the FD, at least with a DD, you can afford to have it out of commission from time to time

If you plan on buying a nice FD in about a year or so start looking now. I looked for months and didn't find one worth buying. Your area may be different, but there are few around that haven't been butchered.

Why not just buy a beater/hauler and turbo the 8? unless you really want the 2 seater..

Very true......Finding a decent, let alone quality FD is not easy. LOL trying to find a Turbo FC nowa days is a nightmare enough. I looked for Months and Months for both types...ended up with a miata.

goodluck?

I have a FD and an RX-8 -- I daily drove my FD for two years before I switched to a Turbo II. They really aren't as bad as people say, money pit wise.

In order to get a good FD, It'll cost as much as you can sell your 8 for.. if not more.

Do you still owe on your RX-8? If so, you'd have to determine if you would be selling at a loss and by how much.

If you wanted something practical and fun to drive, have you considered a Mazda3 or a Kia Soul?
