Steven Forage, a software salesman who spends at least five hours a day in his car, juggles a lot on the road: finalizing deals over the phone, sipping coffee, checking e-mail. One thing he no longer worries about, though, is speed cameras.

"Fuzz alert," an electronic voice called out from the console of his Cadillac recently as it approached a speed enforcement camera in Montgomery County.

At 300 feet, another warning: "Ding, ding. Ding, ding. Fuzz alert."

"It helps you conform," Forage said of the warning system. "If you've forgotten where the cameras are, or get distracted, it refocuses you."

The system, known as PhantomAlert, feeds the locations of speed cameras and red-light cameras into standard Global Positioning System devices and prompts the devices to warn drivers when they are near one. PhantomAlert has subscribers throughout the nation, including more than 2,000 in the Washington region, said the company's owner, District resident Joseph Scott.

Scott said he expects that number to rise because of a new Maryland law that permits cameras, now allowed only in Montgomery, to be installed in work zones and near schools throughout the state. "It's going to be very good for us," he said.

Scott said police should be thrilled by PhantomAlert, particularly because officials say speed cameras are designed not to generate money but to slow drivers.

"Not only should they support us," he said, "but when they mail out citations, on the back they should say, 'Get PhantomAlert.' "

Scott and a handful of employees scour government and police Web sites for camera locations. But subscribers send in most of the locations, which are added to PhantomAlert's database.

Here's an idea.. don't break the law and drive properly, it's cheaper, and safer.

I hope he crashes one day and dies, without killing anyone.

When you're driving, you should only be doing 1 thing.. driving. Nothing more.

You're saying that's safe driving? Driving distracted with your eyes off the road?

While speed can be dangerous and lethal, distracted driving is by FAR worse than speeding. Specially distracted driving + speeding.

I see people who do that everyday on the road, they're the asshole I see burning red lights, rolling through stops, making illegal turns, nearly hitting people, driving dangerously, not respecting distances, not looking when merging, not using their indicators, etc.

i dont encourage what he listed as things that distract him from speed cams. I just like the idea of having a heads-up of their location. I dont email, text, and try to keep conversations short and quick as possible. but there are time i reach for a soda or whatever, or do have to take a phone call for whatever reason. but thats off topic of my liking just for the idea of a GPS that tells you a speed cam is nearing.

wow Cav, this is soooo 2008.
My Escort Passport 9500ix Radar Detector does this for me. I get a weekly email from them with updates to where Redlight cameras and speed traps are. the GPS inside the RD warns me based on my speed so I can get an audio alert at 1,000 feet.

That's true, it is nice, though unfortunately I see it as further enticing people to do those other things.

It's a good idea until you get mobile speed cams on the DB and then you get false positives, and you can still get nailed by a mobile cam that just got setup.

Not foolproof, but a damn bit better then having nothing at all.

Oh yeah. Drive while your driving. Hangup the phone, put down the business deal, Get dressed before leaving home.

obviously its not a 100% flawless solution anyhow.. just like a Valentine1 isnt going to pick up every cop radar..

yeah. I like the idea but I'm not gonna be getting it. I haven't gotten a speeding ticket in ages, though I'm probably due for one.
